eye shadows and eye makeup!
  • i was curious to what kind of eyeshadows everyone uses and also what kind of eyeliners and which one works the best!
    what about mascara??
  • a discussion about our favorite mascaras

I don't think there's one clear favorite but some are more popular than others.

    eye liners are discussed here

The gel eye liners (Stila smudge pots, Bobbi Brown gel liners and Smashbox gel liners) are probably the most popular.

And eye shads are discussed he...

OH MY GOD WE DON'T HAVE A THREAD ABOUT EYE SHADOW? How'd that happen? I like powder shadows but I don't really have a favorite brand.
  • I think of one day, MAC decides to stop producing eye shadows, I will not want to live anymore. There is no world without all those GREAT colors! They are sooo pigmented that a little goes a long way. Plus there's just so much variety! You want matte? You got it. Want LOTS of shimmer? YOU GOT IT!!

When I want to make sure I look great, I reach for MAC eyeshadows. They are also incredibly blendable, and they last forever! Meaning no creases.

Other ones... Nars.. super cute colors and super super soft..

Wet n Wild! It's only 99 cents, but they are soo soft and pigmented. =D
  • I use Clinique touch tint cream shadow in gold. It is my ultimate gold shadow.

I like the ULTA brand powder shadows, and I can usually get them buy one get one free. ULTA loves to have sales on their store brand products!
  • The Shu uemura shadows are wonderful but they're expensive so choose carefully. At the other end of the spectrum the L'Oreal HIP duos are nice. They go on well and are truer to color then most drugstore brands.
  • I just bought a MAC paint pot in Fresco Rose. I really like it alot...so much that I need to get a nice brown to go with it! They seem to stay on pretty well. They are a bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion.

I had been using Neutrogena's mineral eye shadow...it's shimmery
  • Oooooooooooh eyeshadow. I could go on FOREVER, but I'll try to keep it short-(ish).

MAC is amazing. The colors, the textures, the way they go on, they're great. There is a reason that the professionals use it. Some favorite colors: Expensive Pink, Falling Star, Woodwinked, Cranberry, and Sprout. Their pigments also make fabulous shadows, but you need to be careful applying because they are loose powders and get everywhere when you put them on. $14, $19.50 for pigments.

Urban Decay makes really good shadows, especially their Deluxe shadows, which are amazing. They are powders, but feel so creamy and wonderful. I really like Scratch, Heat, and Shag. $17, I think it's $16 for the regular shadows.

I'm now also into Too Faced shadows. I have come to the realization that although the sets and compacts that have more than one color in them (like the Candy Bars) tend to have poor color payoff and poor texture, their individual shadows are fabulous. The duos are especially useful because you get two in one for $17. I really like Totally Toasted. As for their individual shadows, Socialite and Temper Temper are really nice, I think the individual ones are $16.

I actually just bought a bunch of shadows on Ebay, mostly Too Faced. I got some really great prices. Beware of buying MAC pigments on Ebay, though, most are fake.
  • Too Faced ones are sooo shimmery! I love how glittery and wild some of the colors are. I didn't buy them personally, but my sister did. I go over to her place to play with her make up all the time.. TEEHEE

Dior eyeshadows are pretty good too, but SOO SOOOOO pricey!!!! They could be really sheer, but oh soo soft and blendable.

When I buy/use make up from lines like YSL, Dior, Chanel, I really can't help but feel luxurious.. like, I'm using couture make up, when I'm really not.. but a girl can't help it, right?
  • Ladies: After reading all this, all I could think was "I would so love to have their eyeshadow hand-me-downs." Just let me know if you get tired of anything...LOL
  • I know right?????

Unfortunately I don't get tired of my make up. I rarely wear the same color 2 days in a row, and I switch it up constantly. One day I'll do a blue and bright green combo, the next day, a pink and olive green combo. Otherwise it gets too boring.

And I agree with pas about the Candy Bar style eyeshadow. I only have one from Hard Candy, and the texture isn't very smooth. Oh well..
  • I was thinking of getting one of the Too Faced Candy Bars. I think Elke Von Freudenberg gave them the big thumbs up but I can't find the review on her site. Is it just me or does she rearrange her site about once a week so that it's still unreadable but completely different? Anyway, I'll scratch that off my list of maybes.
  • I use to be faithful to shiseido The Makeup Silky eye shadow
they are so creamy its amazing, and they always come in perfect duos or quads, so you actually use them all

However, after my recent experience with Bare Escentuals mineral foundation
I decided to try their eyeshadow, I got the i-quad, and I loove it
and they go from dry to wet, and work as liners too what I need now is the wet-to-dry liner brush!!
  • Purple, if you were thinking of getting the brownish candy bar (the praline one) that's not a bad idea. Those colors are pretty creamy and give good color payoff (I know because I played with them all in Sephora a couple of weeks ago after being disappointed by the plum one). I wouldn't bother with the other colors; I find them far to expensive for the quality you get. But then again, that's just my opinion.
  • Is this the Karen I think it is?? If so, I have some "hand me down" eyeshadows I'll give you tomorrow when I see you for your hair appt:)
  • FB - RIGHT?!??!? I-QUADS ROCK!!!

I've wanted to buy Shiseido's Hydra cream shadows for a while, but it's so hard to splurge $23 on 1 product....
  • Oh....."gidget"!!! I get your screen name. Yep, it's me! Funny meeting you here. How ever did you find this website?!.....LOL

    It's a deal! I'll take 'em.

See you tomorrow at 11:00.....or was it 10:00?...LOL
  • okie...

My sister found a website where you can purchase Japanese products!!!!!!!

    http://www.adambeauty.com

    i'm getting more stuff.. HEEHEE.....

the packaging for these products are GORGEOUS though!! I really couldn't resist.. -sigh..
  • Gloria, you are too funny!
  • Gloria-I think I want everything from the KATE line. I love the presentation and display of the colors in the palette...angled or geometric and fun different shapes. If I purchased it I wouldn't want to use ithem..I would want to hang them on my wall!
  • Could it also be that.... Kate sounds a lot like, Cate???? =D

I'm purchasing stuff from Lavshuca (they eyeshadow pallets are soo pretty! For reviews and pix

and T'estimo (Reviews), Majolica Majorca, and so much more....

I'm really into cute and ornate packaging right now. I love how pretty my Stila pressed powder compact is, and how girly my MAC Antiquitease eyeshadow pallet is.

But yea.. a Touch of Blusher is from Asia, so she keeps up with all the newest Japanese products. After reading her blog, I wanted to fly to Japan or Taiwan IMMEDIATELY. I almost had my dad ask one of his female employees to go shopping, like, "here's $200, buy very good and pretty make up for me okay???". Luckily my sis found this site and I was able to choose for myself.
  • Pas, I think it was "tropical truffle that I was looking at. Does the quality vary significantly from palette to palette? That's not good.
  • Gloria--I think you may be on to something with the names! lol! I really thought the layout and colors were very pretty though :)
  • I'm not an eyeshadow fan, to be honest. I usually stick with liner and mascara...

I haven't tried most of the mascaras out there, I'm sure, but my favorites are Benefit's BadGal Blue (I've heard the original BadGal in black runs, but this one stays put all day!) and Imju's Fiberwig. I usually go with the BadGal Blue, because it takes longer to apply the Fiberwig to full effect. Also, I'm in love with Smashbox's Lash Primer! It works really well, I totally recommend it.

As for eyeliners, I'm obsessed with Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils. They really do stay on and come in so many colors...it's great!
  • Purple, yes, I did find the quality to vary between colors. I found the black licorice one and the plum one to both be of poor texture and color payoff. The praline one, though, was much smoother and the colors were rich. Not sure why that is, but that was my experience trying them out on the back of my hand at Sephora.
  • So I have been using my MAC eye primer and I really do love it! Lately though it has served a better purpose than just making my eye shadow and liner stay. I am a really big Pittsburgh Steelers fan (thanks to Mr. Stryker) and since this eye primer is gold and shimmery I have been wearing it as my shadow during game day and the Steelers are Black and Gold. I just add a darker color eye liner and I'm ready to go! A few weeks back I went to see them play Jacksonville in Pittsburgh and I got so many compliments on my eyes through my dark rimmed glasses from the people around us (mostly older men haha!)

BTW it was cold as hell and snowing that day! The best weather for football!
  • Love the idea of your "Steeler eyes", Cate!
  • I just bought the Urban Decay 24/7 travel pack. It's travel sizes of 5 of their 24/7 eyeliners. I LOVE them! I've tried them in the store before on the back of my hand and really love how they go on sooooooo smoothly, but figured I didn't really need any because I already have several black eyeliners and decided I didn't want to spend $15 on colored eyeliner that I probably wouldn't use very often. Well this set is perfect because it was only $29 for all 5. They go on really smoothly and are waterproof so they are perfect for lining my water line. I know a lot of people are hesitant to do that, but I always line the water line if I put eyeliner on. These are great because I can still wear neutral eye shadow, but can use the different colors just on the water line for a subtle pop of color. Great! The green, gold, and purple look amazing.
  • pas 71 did you get them at sephora?
I've always loved eye liner, but usually stick to black, buy will like to try some color
I specially love liquid eyeliner, sadly I am clumsy applying it
until now, covergirl line exact is the easier to apply liquid eyeliner ever!!
I strongly recommend it, and it's sooo cheap
  • I went to Sephora to get them, but they were out of the travel pack. They had them at Ulta, though, so I picked up there. I think Sephora still has them available online, too. The girl as Sephora said that it was a limited edition thing, so they probably won't be around too much longer. These are really easy to apply because they go on so easily.

As for liquid liner, I usually find that the cheaper the brand, the easier it is to apply. Avon and a previous Covergirl one worked well for me. I think cheaper ones tend to have shorter brushes/tips, making it easier to get a straight, even line. However, I generally like the color payoff of department store liners better. I practiced and learned with the cheaper ones and now have graduated to the most expensive/harder to apply ones! Have you tried resting your hand on your cheek as you line, Fitness? I find that helps.
  • I find gel liners (Stila, Bobbi Brown, Smashbox, Shiseido all make them) much easier to apply than liquid liners, and gives the same if not more dramatic effect.

I recommend using a flat liner brush (MAC's 212) because it's just so easy to apply it with a brush like that.
  • I agree with everything you said, taiwanesegurl. Love that MAC brush myself!
  • I've been using eyeshadow as an eyeliner since I can't find the color I want (Burgundy) in a gel. I use the same brush that I use with the gel liners and wet it with saline. I can get a sharp, well-defined line and it comes off easier than the gels. I don't have the MAC brush but I do know that using the right brush makes all the difference in the world.
  • I think I will borrow some saline solution from my son (who wears contacts) and try that trick tomorrow.
  • I'm surprised that people think that gel eyeliners are easier to apply. I love my Smudge Pot, but it seems to take more work to use that than it does to use liquid liners. The liquid ones are just a quick swipe for me, the gels take a bit more precision. Then again, I really only use my Smudge Pot for a dramatic cat-eye look. It's really hard to get the line thicknesses and "wings" to match so I don't look lopsided! I guess it's harder because it dries quickly and then stays put, so when I'm going back and forth and trying to get my eyes to match it gets hard to work with.
  • pas, I've tried that
I got some really beautiful liquid eyeliner from estee lauder some time ago
and get acceptable results if the end goal is a smoky eye, since I smear it a little bit after wards
but for a clean line, forget it
On the other hand I heard that eye make up should be changed every 3 months or so
so I thought I may as well save my money

Pencil eyeliners are different though, I find that drugstore ones are harder and do not glide as well
    they scratch my eyelid
I love my black lancome "le crayon kohl"
but I think I need to venture out of black for a change
will check spehora for the travel pack
  • I think applying liquid eye liner is like baking a pie crust. Once you've got the hang of it and if you do it regularly, then zip, zip, and your done. But until you've mastered it, it can be really frustrating. Gel eyeliner, on the other hand, may take longer but is a little more forgiving because you're not applying it in one smooth stroke. I've never been able to master liquid eye liner. I can get two good smooth lines but they never match. Then I try to make them match and only make it worse.
  • I have only just started using eyeliner in the past year or so and I finally feel like I am able to apply it (waithout looking trashy). But it seems I am only good at applying the Smashbox ones...and yes I DO love love love the Smashbox brush!

I haven't bought any new products lately *sigh* one day.
