Help the Beauty Brains create a book and win a FREE copy
  • Hello Beauty Brains faithful,

As you know, we've taken a break from the Beauty Brains blog to compile the Beauty Brains book. It's been fun reading through (and sometimes re-writing) many of the great questions & answers we've gathered over the years.

But now we need your help. We have 2 great book cover ideas and we're having a hard time choosing between them. So, we thought we'd get your input to help us decide.

Here's what you do. Look at the two book cover ideas and let us know which one you like better. And if you have any other suggestions about design feel free to tell us that too. We want to create the best book possible and we need your help to do it. Oh yeah, and for everyone who leaves a comment (vote) here on the forum, we will put your name in a hat and choose a winner to receive one of the first copies....FREE!

Here are the possible covers. I've named them so you can use those names when leaving a comment here.

    PINK

    GIRL

You can click on each image to see the whole picture.
  • I like the GIRL cover more. It's sexy, chic, and smart without trying too hard.

Also there's something a bit scary about a head without its cap....
  • I like the GIRL cover too. It's more science-y.
  • I like the white cover the most, but the pink might be more eye-catching demographic-wise.

Some people might be put of by the clinical look of the white (those people being dunderheads, mostly). Additionally, the beauty brains logo clashes a little with the japanimation type girl. Different art genres. The knowledge seeking pink character matches the BB logo.
  • I like the GIRL cover too!
  • I like the "pink" cover better.

If I was strolling through the bookstore and just quickly glanced at the "girl" cover without reading the title, I would think it was a children's book and I wouldn't give it a second glance.

Also, the girl and the lab equipment doesn't match the Beauty Brains logo (color wise) and though it is a cute idea, it just isn't too visually appealing. The girl just seems out of place on the "girl" cover.

I do agree though with taiwanesegirl that the head without a top is a little scary so maybe you could try to fix that...but the rest of the "pink" cover is awesome and it would most definitely catch my eye and make me wanna flip through the book to see what it's about. It seems girly but also smart at the same time.

Great job BeautyBrains! I can't wait to read the book!!!!
  • I like the "Girl" cover
  • I would probably walk right by the white cover, but the pink cover would totally stop me and I would have to look and see what it was. I'm very much attracted to bright packaging.
  • I vote for the pink cover. That was my immediate first choice but the girl cover grew on me as I clicked back and forth between the two. I decided to walk away from it and see what I'd choose if I came back to it later.....and when i did, I went right back to the pink cover.

For me, a quick glance at its cover says "science" and "answers" and then the word "Beauty" jumps out. Combine those three ideas together? That's what your information is all about!

So...........does the lucky winner of the book get it signed by the authors...... with a personalized note?
  • As usual I can't decide...my initial reaction is to go with GIRL because as a beauty book it doesn't take itself too seriously but still reinforces the VERY IMPORTANT idea that there should be MORE GIRLS studying science.

However, what I liked about PINK was the graphic phrasing of the questions that the book will be answering.

I have always LOVED the Beauty Brains logo or icon...it is really effective. Perhaps you should use it as the central image instead of introducing other female images. I think it is strong enough to work on its own without competition from other images.

As more of a "book whore" than "beauty whore" it is really important that the cover of the book be effective in selling its contents. I would encourage you to have your designer work with the existing Beauty Brain icon. It is after all a way to continue your branding if that doesn't sound too crassly commercial.

I am so excited you are doing this book!
  • I definitely vote for Pink. The Girl cover reminds me too much of a children's book. Keep up the great work and I can't wait until the book comes out!
  • I prefer the PINK. The other one looks like some child's "intro to science" book and I would ignore it in a bookstore. The pink one I would probably look at.
  • I vote Pink.
  • I vote form the GIRL cover.
  • I vote for the girl cover, the pink is a great color, but l think that's the only thing that one has going for it.... overall the white wieh the cute girl is the winner for me!

I think the best is to have the cute girl and the chemistry stuff with a pink background!
  • Well, they both have elements I like and don't like about each one (so no clear winner)- I like that the PINK one, all the graphics seem to be a similar "style" -both the BB icon and the open head below seem to "match", whereas the scientist chicky in GIRL is really cute but she doesn't match the the graphic style of the BB icon above at all. The problem with the PINK one, IMHO, is that while it graphically matches better- it looks far too much like one of my psych textbooks from grad school and that doesn't inspire me to associate it as a "fun" reading book.

I think Judy is really onto something with her comments above about the branding & focusing on the BB icon itself more. Why don't you do something like this- use the BB icon large and in the center of the front cover of the book and on the back cover, use a smaller sized picture of the scientist girl, next to the summary text of the book (kind of like when authors put a little picture of themselves on the back cover)? Hope that description made some kind of sense. haha

I'm looking forward to this book too! :cheer: brains for making it!
  • I agree with judy and sylvie about making the focus the BB icon. Call me weird but I think the face/head in the icon will be much more appealing to a broader audience. The girl in labcoat is cute but perhaps too young, suggesting the book might be too "easy." The exposed brain on the pink cover is too textbookish and technical, which detracts from the fun topic. The icon, however, appears to be an attractive woman who nonetheless seems more "brainy" (sorry! bad pun) and mature.

But between the two, I'd pick the pink cover because it is much more compelling.
  • Speaking of the BB Book...when does said book arrive on stands? Could be a good Holiday present!
  • It's still being worked on by our book editor / layout / illustrator.

On the plus side, the writing is all done. Unfortunately, it won't be ready for Christmas, but perhaps a Valentine prezzie!
  • Hey everyone who commented, thanks for all the help.  We just announced that pre-orders are being taken now.  I just sent the final proofs to the printer today.  It's really exciting.
But the most exciting part for you is that one of you will win a free book just because you left comments and helped with the cover.

  • Oooooh my fingers are crossed!!!
I do like that the other picture of the cute blonde girl in a lab coat is used on the main site.  I'm like, HEY that's like me, but BLONDE everytime I see it.
    Yes.. I am a dork.
  • The winner should get a signed copy by the brains behind the book.....
  • I agree with Karen about the signed copy :)
    So who won??!!!
    I wanna know!
  • Alright, the winner was chosen by taking 16 cards from a standard deck and assigning one name to each card.  The cards were then adeptly shuffled by Midbrain.  One card was randomly picked by Left Brain and the winner was determined.
    And the winner is....
    Akurah!!!!
    Congratulations!
Thanks again to everyone for giving us your suggestions.

  • Congrats Akurah!!! Lucky you!
  • Wow, I totally forgot about the contest until I received an email saying I won the book!

Oh man I'm so excited! I'll have to do a book report as soon as I get it. ;)
  • So which cover is it going to be?
  • You can see the cover on the blog here.
