eyeliner brands
  • Hello! I'm going into the 7th grade this year, and I really want to start wearing make-up. My mom helped me pick out some really pretty blue eyeliner, because my eye color is blue. But I wanted to know if anyone knew some really good make-up brands with eyeliner that are good. I don't care for the dark kind of eyeliner. Just the light stuff. Anyone have any ideas for me?
  • Aveda has a nice dark blue eye pencil you might like (but I'm not sure that it's better than one you'd get in a drugstore). It's subtle, it's not heavy. Generally, in my experience, pencils of any brand (true pencils that you use a sharpener for) will give you the most subtle effect. I also like blue liner to accentuate my green-blue eyes. You can also use a brown pencil that matches the tone of your lashes. I'm not sure whether the expensive brands are necessarily any better than drugstore brands.
  • Aveda. Ok. Thank you very much. An eyeliner I'm using now is called N.Y.C. It's a very light blue that looks very good. I have light skin ( very very light) so when I put black eyeliner, or eye shadow on, it looks really bad. I have very black i guess brownish eyelashes. But thank you very much for helping me. I'll try Aveda and come back here and tell you how it went.
  • I've heard good things about NYC. Don't feel like you have to try aveda specifically, unless you can't find what you want where you normally shop. But whatever brand you like, I would try pencils rather than liquid or gel liners and see if that gives you the subtle effect you're looking for. I have the same color eyelashes as you and I use dark brown rather than black liner, it looks softer.
  • OK. That sounds good. and yeah, my mom looked up good eyeliners ( my moms the beauty expert, but in case she doesnt know it, i come here now!) and she said all it said was liguid and gel and poopy kinds of eyeliners that i porbably shouldn't use because there hard to put on. i like you sarah. you are turley the beauty expert!
  • Thank you beautycutie--not really an expert, I'm just a person who discovered makeup pretty late--I'm about where you are now, just finding out about it all:) I started out at 15 wearing blush and lipstick, and that's all I wore regularly until a couple of years ago.
  • haha. ok. how long have you've been a member? i don't know what the whisper comments are! haha. but yeah. see, i'm the oldest in my class because of y birthday which is in the summer. so i started late with school. but a lot of girl look more mature and wear a lot of makeup. I wore make-up sometimes but not all the time. now at this school, junior high, i think its ok to wear makeup more. so thats what i plan to do
  • I think if you "whisper" only the person you are writing to can see it. I'm glad you are trying to skip over the "overdone makeup" stage. A lot of people your age go overboard before they figure out that subtle actually looks better!
  • oh. ok. thats cool. yeah. like thisn one girl, she wears soooo much make up at my school. and she thinks shes popular for doing that! and i look at her and i think wow. your crazyy! lol
  • Rimmel makes some good eyeliner pencils too. Also the Revlon Color Stay pencils are good. And Sarah is right...don't think that just because a product is not expensive it is not a good product. NYC makes some really good products!

You might want to go on makeupalley.com and do some reading there. You do have to become a member but it is free. Just lots of posts from regular people rating the products they have tried.

Another thought....have you tried using eyeshadow to line your eyes? It gives a subtle look. You just need an angled brush and shadow in whatever color you choose. Dampen the brush, swipe it across the powder and line away. You could probably find some video on how to if you have problems figuring out exactly how to do it.
  • Big 2nd here. Using eyeshadow is my favorite way to apply eyeliner. It is so soft and pretty. I have a lot of eyeshadow so I love to play with colors. No reason to stick with the usual black or gray- It's fun to line with teal or green or brown, and on and on.
  • I use shadows as liners too.  I don't use water, I use a trish mcevoy (overpriced) product (I think it's called "finish line eye") that you wet the angled brush with before putting the shadow on the brush, and it makes the shadow waterproof.  The only thing is, with that method, I find the line is pretty dark when compared with pencil.  Although it might not be if you used water, or a lighter colored shadow?
Although they are expensive, I can highly recommend trish mcevoy brushes.  I love them--very high quality.  I use her angled eyelining brush.
  • The eco tools brushes are good too and not real expensive. The angled brush is my favorite for this task too. I agree that good brushes are a must! If you do like the look of a darker and more defined line you can use a pencil to line with and then brush eye shadow powder over the top of the pencil line. That seems to stay put pretty well for me. If it ends up too dark and defined you can always smudge it with a Q-tip.
  • Ok! Thanks guys! I'll try t and tell you how it goes.
  • I like lindygirl1960's advice about applying shadows with a slant tipped brush to line your eyes for a softer look. The make-up artists at a MAC counter can help you out with this. They can suggest some subtle colors and then apply one to your eyes while you hold a mirror to watch!
  • Rimmel makes some nice color eyeliners -- I use Sonia Kashuk's gel liner for Black and Brown just because I prefer the look. Also -- I agree that eyeshadow as eyeliner is a great way to change it up. The ecotool's brushes are really nice, too. I've converted nearly all of my brushes to their line I like them so much. Good luck and have fun!
  • Disablingmercury: Thanks for the tip on the Ecotools brushes. I did a Google search and quickly learned they get great reviews. Looks like they are available at Target, Walgreens, etc.. and are very reasonably priced. Gotta love a good bargain that's also easy to find! I recently purchased a Sonia Kashuk's eyeshadow brush at Target and like it a lot, too.
  • If you can't find them in your local stores the eco tools brushes are also available online from drugstore.com. (I couldn't find them where I live!)
  • I really like Avon Glimmersticks eyeliners. They go on like a pencil but they don't need sharpening. And it lasts well (doesn't fade).
  • aesome. ok. thanks
  • agree with that on Avon Glimmersticks. I won't use any other type now because they stay put and are much easier to use and nicer feeling then normal pencils.
  • I'm in love with Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner. With a small eyeliner brush you can put it where you want and it will stay put until you take it off with soap and water. It gives you a bit of time before it dries to smudge it a bit if that is a look you'd want.
I use it daily nestled into my lash line and for night I'll apply a bit more and smudge it up a bit (although, you may be a bit young for the night time look :-) )

  • You could try the color Icon eye pencils and the mega eyes defining marker, both by wet n wild. the pencil goes on very smooth, almost gel like, and has a lot of light colors for you to chose from. The marker is just that- it's like a felt tip marker with a super-fine point, it's very easy to apply. And I've found the pencils for $0.99 before!
  • I actually did end up buying a couple wet n wild eyeliners! I love them- they are a good product at a low price!
