dying a streak in my hair
  • Hello Beauty cuties all over!!!!lol. like ive said, im 13. i really wanna put a streak in my hair. any color, really. i have brownish redish hair. and i the summer, it turns blondish. my mom says no because ill be swimming because of camp. are there any other disadvantages to dying???
  • Hmm..damage to your hair for one? Plus if you have darker hair you can end up with streaks not quite the color you were looking for. I think your mom has a point. Being in the water and swimming a lot will be hard enough on your hair without having it already damaged by streaking it. Besides if it naturally streaks in the summer why bother?!! :-)
  • I'm guessing you were thinking of a bright color streak, not all over subtle highlighting?  It might have been different when I went to camp, so I'm a little old fashioned probably.  But we were pretty au natural (no makeup, nothing fancy with our hair) and the first camp I went to, they actually had us wear uniforms to be sure none of the girls would be too concerned with looking cool and could just enjoy all the experiences outdoors.  I'm a little corny probably, but I kind of enjoyed that (although I thought my uniform shorts fit me in a really unflattering way and admittedly, I couldn't stop obsessing about it...).
  • Just one thing, whatever you decide to do about your hair, when you go to camp take plenty of sunblock with you and USE IT! (It doesn't work so well if you leave it in the bottle it came in, right?) When you get older you will be very glad you protected your skin from sun damage.
  • Ok. Tank you guys very very much. and yeah I think I over use sunscreen!
  • Just a warning: don't dye your hair with Cool Aid. Several of my friends tried it when I was your age because their parents wouldn't let them dye their hair normally. It looked good when it was first done, but it faded into some awful colors that a) would run and stain their skin and clothes when it rained and b) didn't come out all of the way for MONTHS. So, first day of school after the summer they still had icky dull color-stained hair. Not flattering.

As for actual dye, it will damage your hair some and the sun is pretty bad for colored hair -- it makes it fade like crazy (they do make UV blocking products for hair now, though). Also, if you put in blonde streaks the chlorine in the pool -can- turn it a greenish tint if you do not thoroughly wash your hair afterwards. This is not to put you off so much as to let you know that colored hair takes a bit of effort to maintain. =) I dealt with it from 14-19, I just had to be careful.
  • I would like never do that
  • Maybe kids are smarter about such things these days than we were lol:) And while we're lecturing on things not to do for tweens-teenagers, a little off topic, but don't let anyone convince you to play the fainting/choking game or anything that involves compressing your chest or neck! A friend of mine told me that when she was a teenager, she let someone press on the area of her heart until she passed out for grins, not recommended!
  • Beautycutie14: I never thought people would, but they did, so I thought I'd pass down my "wisdom." It has absolutely no reflection on your intelligence as I was pretty sure you wouldn't do such a thing to begin with (you are here, after all!), but I just had to be sure . =) No one deserves green-tinted blonde hair. (Well...maybe -someone- does...lol!)

Sarahf: Yeah...I grew up in a small town in the country. And my family didn't have lots of money. No one's family did, really. Hence the coolaid...you could get like 5 packets for a dollar! Honestly, I blame complete boredom over intelligence, lol. Not sure about the choking/fainting game, though. I mean, I've watched my friends skateboard/bike off things and hurt themselves but everyone was pretty careful about everyone else's safety during the process. Obviously not the safety of their hair, though...
  • AWWWWW. too sweet
  • Yeah, by intelligence, I mean savvy, not so much IQ.  But beautycutie is obviously a pretty savvy 12/13 year old.
  • Whhy thank you, Sarah. and i'm turning 13 in 24 days
  • Good point, sarahf, good point. =)
  • Hi Beautycutie,
Where I live, it's pretty common for young teenagers to have a colored streak in their hair, but I guess it must be very different depending where you live. If your mom does agree to let you dye your hair, here are my thoughts about the risks.
Dying a streak may damage your hair, but that's not necessarlly a problem.  It's just a streak, not your whole head. And you're young and your hair probably grows out really fast. If you don't like how it looks at the end of the summer, dye over it with a semi-permanent dye like Clairol Loving Care that you can get at a drugstore. Super easy. Also, if you want to be cautious about the streak, you could take a piece that's already lightened by the sun, and dye over that with something like Manic Panic hair dye. If you don't use peroxide, you won't do any permanent damage. The color  will wash out pretty soon, but if you get a whole jar and just dye one small streak, you could re-dye it all summer before you finish the jar. If you have a friend who's also allowed to dye her (or his) hair, it could be fun to do it together.
Besides damage, are there any other possible risks? Hmmm...You better find out if the camp allows things like re-dyeing your hair in the camp bathroom. If not, just decide whether or not you're willing to put up with whatever color the streak turns during your time at camp, even if it's a weird green. Another possible problem...It could be that you get to camp and find that you are the only one with a streak. You might you feel uncomfortable standing out. You should decide ahead of time if you're willing to take that risk.
Oh yeah, and do the allergy test first. The dye package will tell you how to do that.
And finally, do what your mom tells you to, of course, because you're only almost 13.
    Have fun at camp!

  • Thinking on it, I've also seen people doing bright streaks on the underside of their hair, so that way you only see it when it peaks out or you pull your hair up.
  • FYI, I got the impression from another thread that this is a day camp, is that right beautycutie?
  • Yeah. I've decidied not to go with the streak. maybe during the winter or something. i dont even know if where allowed to do that at my new school im going to. i really wanted a red one, but all these girls who are like goth at y school had one so i didnt know if i tmeant your goth! or emo! and yeah, its a day camp. i dont like over ngith camps.
