I've been having problems with eye make-up, especially eye-liner, making my eyes water A LOT. It usually takes a couple of hours after applying, but all of a sudden my eyes will be running all over my face. Any suggestions for specific brands/alternative products that will not cause this problem? And perhaps some insight into why exactly this happens. Thanks.
I have insane skin allergies, and I've had good luck with Almay, Physician's Formula, and Sephora's own brand cosmetics. But if it's an allergic reaction then your reaction may be different. A lot of it is trial and error.
Are you sure your eye makeup is the culprit? I have seasonal allergies, but instead of sneezing or getting a runny or stuffy nose, my symptoms are all manifested in my eyes. I have found relief in allergy eyedrops, both otc and prescription, and to a lesser extent, otc oral allergy meds. Do you also have skin irritation around your eyes from the makeup? Are the symptoms relieved when you remove the makeup? Does it happen anytime you where eye makeup, or does it happen mostly in one place - say more at work? Maybe the allergen is in that specific place. Is it all eye makeup? Have you tried using just one product at a time to gauge your reactions?
It may seem like the eye makeup is to blame more than an environmental allergen, because your eyes water hours after you apply the products, so presumably hours after you wake up. You would think that if it was an airborne allergen, you would have the symptoms around the clock, but that's not always the case. Also, it's possible to develop seasonal allergies to things that never bothered you before; pollen and mold are some very common allergens. That said, it also makes sense that you could develop a sensitivity to the cosmetics.
If you can, compare the ingredients of your products and look for a common factor and that may be causing the problems. Or maybe it's not even an allergy. One of your products may have been inadvertently contaminated with bacteria, so it may be that you have to get all new fresh product.
All these questions and this long ramble is mostly to point out that it's hard to pinpoint exactly why your eyes are watering without some further investigation. And since I'm not a doctor, my best advice would be to consult a real one if your problems continue. I hope you find something helpful in this wordy reply.
I totally agree with divegirl. Seasonal allergies could be the culprit. If it turns out they are not her suggestion of trying one product to find the one causing an allergy is the sensible approach.
How old are the products in question? Cosmetics have varied 'shelf' life after opening. (Yeah....sorry, can't think of how one would word that properly and have it make sense.) Here is an article I found about it : http://makeup.about.com/od/facefundamentals/qt/TossMakeup.htm
If you can't find an answer to your problem please see a doctor.
I have crazy sensitive skin, and, not sure if im spelling right, but egzema. Especially in the winter- it's the worst- but I have eye allergies so I use eyedrops. I'm wondering if your makep has little ieces hat are falling off into your eyes. Maybe thats causing it????? I have used N.Y.C and I liked that. Right now, I'm using Sally Beautys brand. I'm in camp, so we go swimming everyday. It smears, but never comes off. ( except by makeup remover or hard rubing)
@ beautycutie - Ouch ! Don't rub your eyes! Bad for the skin around the eyes and bad for the eyes themselves.
A little extra virgin olive oil will take the eye makeup off quickly and without resorting to rubbing hard. (Yes, the extra virgin olive oil you find in the kitchen!)
Gently rub a little over the eyelids to loosen the makeup, then gently tissue off.
I have allergies to certain dyes or pigments in eye makeup. I cannot handle anything with blue or pink in it or if there's glitter. If I apply any of those, the skin around my eyes burns and turns red, sometimes within an hour of putting it on. And if I don't take it off quickly, my eyelids swell. I have gotten very good advice from the MAs at MAC counters. They seem to know which shadows and eyeliners colors to avoid even when the they don't look like they would contain the pigments that would cause me problems.
