  • WOOT WOOOT!!! Genomics in the house~!! what whaaaaa~

    okie.. i'm done being a nerd.. :P

Biochem was tooo much for me, so I switched over to Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics.. and now I'm thinking about going into business because.. at the end of it all.. I want to make money.. :P

what's ur research on Fitness Brain? this is sooo exciting!! another genetics freak here!!
  • Gloria--you'd love my mother-in-law. She is a professor of Genetics and Pharmacology(sp) at one point in time she was the head of the department!
  • Hi
My research is on parasite genomics, Including Plasmodium falciparum (malaria) and Toxoplasma gondii (toxoplasmosis)
not sure what my next step will be, I am having the academics vs industry debate in my head now

that's the serious part of me,I think I have split personality
My other we talks about your "powerhouse" while teaching Pilates,
and slathers as many different beauty products I can get my hands on,
there was a pint I had 5 different lotions, just or my body!! each for a different part
It was really hard to carry all that while traveling!! now I am down to 2
  • A lot of the Ph.D. candidates in my department are having that debate lately. I wish I could give you some advice other than university holidays are good.
They seem to be torn most between the paycheck and their desire to teach and help. I think I stay at the university only because I can get away with wearing jeans and they pay for my classes if i want to take any. (I don't teach, btw, I manage a research journal and make sure students have all their pre-requisites in order for their programs.) You could do like some of our instructors and work in industry then during the summers be a part time instructor.

I feel like I have started to ramble. Sorry.

Anyway, you would think I was preparing for a moisturization disaster at work, so I can definitely empathize with the lotion collection. I have shifted various creams to my office "in case of emergency".
  • I am SciBirg, 34 years old, from Norway. I have just started making my own beauty products and am in the process of doing research to find stuff that is actually beneficial to put in beauty products as opposed to sounding nice on the ingredience list...

I am a Computer Engineer but I long to work in a more creative field.
  • Hi! I'm Lisa, 18, from Phoenix, AZ. I'm a freshman at ASU-I'm declared as a psychology major at the moment, though I have no idea what I want to do after school.

I'm not really good at talking about myself...uh..I'm very pale (a shock, what with my German, Swedish, and Irish heritage!) I have light blonde hair that I highlight and heat style (blowdry and flatiron) most days of the week. I also have super sensitive skin with rosacea, and I used to have moderately severe inflammatory acne, which is now almost all cleared up (mainly due to treating endocrine issues)

I'm more than slightly obsessed with beauty/haircare/skincare/etc. My bathroom/room honestly could stock your local Ulta. This is probably not a good thing.

I've been reading the BB's blog for probably a little over a year...Brains, you're amazing, and never fail to provide honest information and/or make me laugh (the 'scent of a woman' post comes to mind here)!
  • bixbybear--I LOVE that post! I felt naughty when I went to the website
  • Welcome Bixby, and thanks for the kind words. We do try to educate AND entertain. And if you're a long time reader you already know that most of the "naughty" stuff on our site gets blamed on Sarah Bellum!
  • Hola Everyone,
I am Lynnette from East Greenville, Pennsylvania. About an hour or so northeast of Philly. About ten minutes off the NE extension of the PA turnpike!
I am going to be 2 years short of, oh, who cares, on Saturday. One wonderful husband who is one year cancer free. (prostate cancer that he left for years and was very lucky) Been married since, hmm, sometime in the 80's!!!
Oldest son is married with two beautiful daughters. Middle son graduated from Millersville and has a great job at a Fortune 500 investment corporation. Youngest is daughter, very much into skin care and how to look good with minimal makeup. She is a senior at Notre Dame. Three Yorkies up in age and one cardinal that I rescued in August. (named her O'Hara)
I own my own salon and have for the past almost 8 years. Monday is my 5 year anniversary where I am at now.
I attend classes as much as I can to gain knowledge of skin care and anything new in the nail industry. I am an educator for one of the best nail companies in the world. I write for one of the trade magazines and am asked to contribute to the Q&A pertaining to troubleshooting in the magazine.
I love my clients and I love my job. Want a Brazilian wax? Call me!! I make them fun.
I have worn makeup since 8th grade???? Not sure as my parents did not let me and I went to Catholic school. Need I say more? ha ha...
    My skin care regimen is:
Dermalogica Age Smart products. LOVE them!!!
Wash, wash, mist, moisturize. (PreCleanse, Cleanser, mist , Super Rich Repair)
Followed by Jane Iredale pressed minerals -Suntan. Sometimes I use the liquid minerals under the pressed.
    All Jane Iredale below:
    Dubonnet blush
Any color scheme I want for eyeshadow that day.
    Liner
    Cover Girl Lash Exact
    Makeup stays on all day.
I forget how I found this site.

Fitness, just curious, with your research in malaria, did you find anything that that can be contracted in the states?
    Buenos dias,
    Lynnette

OOPS-- forgot to mention that once a week I do a deep exfoliation with A Natural Difference Pumpkin Peel--20% or Dermalogica's MultiVitamin with Exfoliant Excelerant. OR I do a microdermabrasion treatment. The REAL MD, not the handheld brush thing!
  • Hi
Lynette, sort of neighbor as well
with cate it makes three PA gals, close to philly!!

Well, regrading Malaria, the US has been (almost) malaria free since the WHO eradication campaign, that started together with the smallpox campaign. Malaria however has not been eradicated, actually a person dies every 30 seconds, the bugs are way too smart, they develop resistance rapidly. But first world countries do not have regular incidence of malaria.
That said, as global warming progresses, the mosquitoes are migrating outside of the tropics, there has been reported cases of malaria in homeless populations in Florida, so it may be a matter of time. In any case we have the money to afford the new generation drugs that kill the bugs (for now), the people that die from it often cannot afford a 1$ mosquito net. Sad but true, that's also why a lot of pharma companies do not work on making new drugs for it, because there's no profit, if they do it they know it has to be philanthropic. I wish there were as much awareness for it as there is for HIV/AIDS or breast cancer, since it kills more people.
  • Well, malaria is not going to draw the celebrities. Not their style. Sad.
The reason I asked is because back in the early '90's I got very sick. I had more blood drawn because no one knew what was wrong with me.
I was tested for malaria as I had been in southern Florida when I started to get sick. I was told that it happens, but we do not hear about it.
I had all the signs and symptoms of malaria. Eventually I found out I had Lyme Disease. Was sick for a very long time. I still have issues related to Lyme, the worst being migraines. Thank goddess for Imitrex shots and pills!
    thanks for replying neighbor,
    Lynnette
  • Lynnette--Congrats to your husband for being cancer free! That's great! Also, I love that your cardinal is named O'Hara! Sorry about the Lyme's Disease...that is crappy. I knew a little boy who had Lyme's in first grade a few years back. I believe his name was Bradley...oh so sad how much school he missed. He was in the Before and After school program I ran
  • Lynette, Lyme disease
I am glad you are OK, the lab down the hall studies Lyme disease
I still do not know how doctors confuse those symptoms, if you have malaria you know it, all your blood cells start bursting at the same time
I get frustrated sometimes how MDs are trained in this country, if you know the scientific basis of the disease
as opposed to just a list of symptoms, you do not confuse malaria with anything, not all docs are like that though, they keep up with science
but most don't, I really can't believe it

Lyme disease is hard to diagnose, good that they caught it before it got worst,
the PI of th lab that studies it down the hall actually got it and had half his face paralyzed for a long time.

I did find that some designers actually made some T-shirts to raise funds for malaria, sponsored by glamour
    they are really cool T-shirts,
here is what the magazine says

"Glamour is proud to join with Malaria No More and these five of-the-moment designers to help supply much-needed bed nets to women and children—and save lives," said Cindi Leive, Glamour's Editor-in-Chief . "There's nothing more glamorous than that!"

    you can get them at:

    http://www.malarianomore.org/glamour.php

I think they make nice holiday presents
  • Thanks for your introductions, Lynette & Fitness Brain. You guys are both great contributors around here lately so it's nice to learn a little bit more about the two of you!
  • Oh definitely!!

I so want to go to your salon Lynette. You keep up on so much, and it's great that you share it with us. Congrats on your hubby being cancer-free, and of you getting through Lyme disease.

I do agree with Fitness on doctors though. They should also pay attention to the science part of the body, instead of just outward symptoms.
  • Thanks for the warm welcome!
Lyme Disease--- it is crazy. I was sick for a very long time before I found out what was wrong with me. Finally, after about three doctors, I found one who went on the clinical instead of the diagnostic. Was on antibiotics for three years, five months of IV.
I stopped because I knew down the road I would never be able to take antibiotics if I kept up on that path. By then I knew what was Lyme and what was not.
I have severe migraines that come with the period. This is one of the leftover treats that Lyme has left for me. Two months from today I am getting a hysterectomy and I hope the migraines will go with it!! lol... I have had severe twitching on the left side of my face for years now. I opted, after a bad year on seizure meds for this, to go with Botox for the twitch. Not for cosmetic reasons--just for the twitch.
I do have some memory issues from the Lyme, but I like to think I have recovered about 85%. Hey, I am alive, so that is all that matters!
Any of you who are in the area, just give me a ring to see if I could get you in. Check out my site.. the prices are different, as that page was created ages ago, but it gives you an idea of what I do here. http://salon29.tripod.com

    Buenos noches,
    Lynnette

Thanks for the kind words about DH. There are major issues to deal with after a DaVinci prostatectomy, but we are getting through. Pat is just very lucky it was caught when it was. It was ready to mastastacize. If he did not have the surgery, I would have killed him!!!! ;-)
    This is a nice group.

  • My father, mother and sister have all been diagnosed with Lyme desease. ( I grew up in East Lyme, CT but my parents were both diagnosed long after they left the area so I think it's just a funny coincidence.) The symptoms were completely different for all three so I can understand why it's so hard to diagnose. None of them got the traditional bullseye. Ironically, I got the bullseye once, which was followed by a high fever but I tested negative for Lyme so go figure. My mother and sister are both fine but my father has never fully recovered. He can barely walk up the stairs now.
  • For all you Parasite lovers out there, be sure to read Carl Zimmer's book Parasite Rex. It has some great stories and wonderfully weird creatures in it.
  • Hi! I'm Peggy from NJ (no turnpike jokes, please!). I'm 29 and was once a PhD-candidate in immunology/microbio. Long story short, I followed my gut and made a pretty radical career transition out oft he laboratory and into medical writing/editing for clinical research. So yes, I'm another Bio-nerd =P Anyway, nice to see people here who are interested in knowing the science of beauty. I am a self-proclaimed product junkie who has spent YEARS looking for mattifying lotions that work for my shiney (literally) happy face. I think 50-75% of "good skin" is based on good genes and luck (thanks mom) but I'm always looking and testing stuff to improve that percentage.

I believe in the "less is more" routine, so my routine is primarily wash with a nice foamy cleanser (I use Biotherm products mostly though I do like Olay foaming face wash), moisturize with sunscreen (Shiseido works for me) and mascara, that's it! If my skin gets shiney i use blotting sheets (DHC). So far so good.
  • Hi, bobanerd! You will be another great addition to our BB community!
  • yes welcome bobanerd!
  • Thanks guys! You all are so friendly =) I am having brain overload trying to read each forum discussion...information overload! great to hear people's product reviews as well!
  • YAY another bio-nerd!!

welcome welcome, and I'm glad you like reading our personal reviews. share your reviews too ok??
  • Left Brain,
I would LOVE to read that book, but when I researched the Lyme years ago, it turned my stomach to know that the blood from that tick who bit me injected blood from its' previous host, which most likely was a mouse. Deer have nothing to do with Lyme aside from the fact that the ticks just hitch a ride to their next dinner. I shudder even now!!! Mouse blood running through my veins! UGH.
    lol,
    Lynnette
  • HI all!
I am completely new to this forum, so I am not quite sure what to do. So here goes nothing. My name is Linda I'm 19 from Miami, I am currently studying accounting. I am very much so a product junkie. Whether it's mascara, creams, or shoes I am all over it. I also collect nail polish, from essie to chanel I don't discriminate against a good shade, I have so far close to 40 bottles.

    My Daily Regimen Includes:
guinot's hydra tendre soft wash cleansing cream followed by guinot's pure balance cream, for me they work very well because I am prone to break outs, yet I have dry sensitive skin for the most part so it balances it all out after that I use the guinot hydrazone eye cream. The eye cream is great because it isnt heavy and does just what its supposed to hydrate not lift or clog. I pretty much do this in the morning and at night. I dont like to experiment too much with facial products because of how sensitive my skin.

When it comes to make up its almost a completely different story. I am always trying out new brands so far I am addicted to the ysl everlong mascara it's just perfect and the dior bronzer in sunrise party, i love it its so far the only bronzer that doesn't make me look like I got the spray tanning from hell. I am also in love with the chanel professional brow duo it give me perfect brows. On a daily basis I don't usually put on that much make up usually just a bit of concealer from origins and some chap stick/lip balm/whatever is in my bag. I found this site through the my yahoo customizing and was hooked on the article. It seems great, every single article is eye catching and I just could not, not be a part of the site. Needless to say I am happy to be a part of it and hopefully I'll be a great addition to the forums.

    -Linda
  • Hi Linda - welcome to the Forum. This is a good place to ask our community about their tips and tricks for beauty care. We also discuss posts that appear on the main blog and we encourage forum members to post questions here that they'd like to see answered on the blog.

    Enjoy!
  • Welcome!!  Do check out our mascara discussion so you can weigh in on all the mascaras you've tried.  I'm such a big mascara whore too.  The sad part is, after I put on mascara, I look in the mirror and bat my lashes, at my self.  =D

  • Thank you both for the welcome! I will be sure to check out the mascara discussions and the main blog. =)
  • My name is Jill, and I am glad there are actually women older than me telling their stories. I'll be 51 in March, so I feel like a dinosaur compared to some of you young gals. I'm disabled with Fibromyalgia and a bladder disease common to women with Fibro, so I haven't worked in 6 years. I have debilitating fatigue, so I never know what the day is going to be like energy wise. It was devastating to me to quit working since I derived a lot of my self worth from my career. I was the assistant administrator of a psychiatric hospital before stopped working. After I stopped, I picked up my mother's habit of watching QVC and other home shopping networks where I learned a ton of stuff about skincare and makeup that I never knew before. I didn't buy much, but I watched every makeup and skincare show that was on. QVC especially has a lot of top name brands on their channel. I then graduated to the internet where I've gotten my PhD in reading the ingredients of skincare products. I couldn't believe that there were other women as interested in this stuff as I am until I stumbled onto this site when I Googled "mineral oil" the other day. I envy the women on this site that actually work in the area of skincare chemistry, or any type of skincare profession.

I am currently obsessing over finding a good moisturizer for dry skin with anti-aging benefits. I think I look and dress better than ever before since learning how to from shopping channels and shows like Project Runway, and Elle magazine to name a few. I just wish I had known as much about skincare 30 years ago as I do now because I'd be a lot less wrinkled. Now I'm making up for lost time.

I have been married for 25 years, and have a 20 year old son who has finally moved out enabling us to use his old room for a home gym. It looks much better as a gym. You can actually walk around in the room now since the sea of clothes on the floor is gone.

I use Patricia Wexler's products for skincare for the most part, but I'm always trying new things. I finally have enough disposable income to support my beauty endeavors. I cannot live without Channel khol eye pencils, Lancome mascara, Estee Lauder Intensive Lifting makeup, and various Laura Mercier makeup products. My favorite shampoo and conditioner are Frederic Fekkai for color treated hair.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, and gabbing about women's issues. It seems like there is such a great bunch of gals on this site compared to some of the high school cliquishness that I've witnessed on other sites. It's great to meet everyone! I didn't spell check, so please excuse my mistakes.
  • Welcome aboard Jill!  We look forward to hearing your take on new and interesting skin care and other cosmetic products that you've used or even wonder about.  A PhD in skin care ingredient labels....I love it!
  • Hi

I am Anja from Norway. I am 25 years old and is interested in Gothic nail designs. Nice to meet you all. Make up and all of that I know very little about, and I have never been much interested in my looks, but perhaps I can learn a few things on this site.
  • Hi Anja!  It's so good to have you on the forum.  I love your nick name.
We've got some people on this site who know a lot about nails so make sure you read those discussions.
  • Thank you for the welcome. Yes I have found some very interesting information on nail care on this site. That is the reason why I joined the forum. Have a wonderful day.
  • Hi everyone! I'm Vanessa :)
I'm 20 years old and I am a junior in college. I'm majoring in Biology and after college I am planning to apply to grad schools to get a master's degree in cosmetic science. Right now I am working on finding a summer internship where I can get experience formulating skin care products.
I have always loved skin care and ways to enhance beauty. But never thought I would be able to make a career out of that passion. Because of that false notion I was previously a humanity studies major, but I am so glad that I realized I could make a career out of something I love and I am thrilled that I am on my way to reaching that goal!
I am especially interested in finding better treatments for acne and anti-aging (fountain of youth, where are you?!!!).
I am so glad that I found this site. I have learned so much about beauty products and I definitely have become a smart consumer about them. Now when I read the ingredients lists on products I can actually recognize a decent amount of those ingredients! And because of that I can do a better job of sorting out the crappy products from the products that will actually work.
I also love reading people's opinions of the products they use.
Thanks BeautyBrains for creating this site and thanks to everyone for their contributions to the forum. I look forward to reading the blog and discussions everyday!!
  • Hi Vanessa nice to meet you. :D
  • A big hello to Dark Eyes and PrettyClaws. I'm sure you'll enjoy getting to know our Forum members. They share lots of fun information here. And thanks so much for the kind words about our blog. We really try to educate and entertain - I'm glad you're finding it helpful!
  • Hi HI!!!!
My name is Michelle and I've just recently discovered BeautyBrains.
I am 18 years old, a sophomore in university, and I am a chi-kor-jap asian. (chi-kor-jap isn't a real word lol, I made it up because I have chinese, korean, and japanese in me ^^)
Anyway, I major in Business and Psychology...at least for now. I don't really know what I want to be when I grow up, so deciding a major is a bit of a chore!!! (ssshhh!! don't tell my parents ^^)
I absolutely adore this site now and I like how the Brains peoples are so personal!!! *dances around* I got an email!!!!!!
If joining the Beautybrains community and help do research and write about it and stuff could be a career...I'd want to be that when I grow up ^^!
    See you around!!!!
    love,
    mich

  • Hey Mich!
Welcome!!!  You are a smorgasboard (is that a word?) of Asian!  And bleh for the majoring.. a friend of mine (Junior) is just starting on accounting because her mom read that accountants are 1 of the most desired people or something.  Bleh..
Study what you like and your career will find ya~
  • Hi all,
My name is Lauri and I'm a beauty school dropout. I'm a sahm of 2 teens, one of each, both seriously into hair care products and cosmetics. Due to a strong cancer history in my family, I do alot of medical research, both for myself and others, and question everything from JAMA articles to quacks. I guess my tombstone will say "Read the fine print please" or "Check the asterisk", 2 things I continually say to my kids when they tell me how Brand X is so-o much better than whatever I've purchased.
I don't wear much make-up, currently use Dove shampoo/conditioner and buy what's cheap to refill bottles of more expensive brands when my kids aren't looking. He still thinks he's using his original bottle of got2be hairspray on his mohawk when it's really Rave extra hold. Which is why I like this site! Y'all give me the support in a readable (to them) format when my kids ask for something that I know is bogus. Now if only I could buy cheaper refills for some of her MAC and Urban Decay products...

    Lauri
  • Hi,

I am Jay Hall,33, and I live in Anchorage, Alaska with my wife and daughter... and I stumbled upon this site when I found my wife sitting at the computer giggling at one of your posts, now we read it together and I find alot of the information genuinely interesting.. I like to hear about the science behind all of the companies promises and have learnt alot about all aspects of chemistry, not just that directly related to skincare.. I have a degree in english literature and work as a free-lance entertainment and political journalist (I know two subjects which make for strange bed fellows!) I like to jog, kickbox, do yoga, play basketball and read good books...

I have a very boring skincare range (and one that I have heard is quite bad for the skin) but I have always found it to work, and have used it since forever (well since I became a self obsessed, vain teenager!) and old habits die hard!

Clinique, mild facial soap in bar format (EEEck!)
    Clinique, clarifying lotion number 2
Clinique, Dramatically Different lotion for dry skin
    Clinique, Anti-Oxidant continous rescue
Clarins Beauty Flash balm (for those days where looking after the baby replaces sleep)
AND my wife forces me to use Clinique 15 minute Facial
  • "Hi" to everyone that's new! What an interesting, diverse group of people to start contributing to the forum!
  • your skincare regimen is quite normal.. i don't see anything bad about it..
it's much better than my husband's too!!  i THINK he washes his face once a week.. =D
    How is Alaska like?
  • A big Beauty Brains hello to Jay and Mich. I loved your intro's - you both have oodles of personality which is exactly what we're looking for here in the Forum.
Mich - if you're really interested in learning more about doing beauty research, you can join our little elite group of product reviewers.  Let me know if you're interested.
  • Oops, I forgot to give a shout out to Lauri as well. I laughed out loud at your tombstone comment! Welcome!
  • Hi
I may have intro'd myself before but I will do again since I am going to add a comment or two today.  Older than dirt, love this site and the Cosmetic Cop's, and I preach (like Cassandra I guess) that people shouldn't spend good $ on "miracles".  The only thing I know that "stops" aging is a good sunscreen, and the only thing that reverses it is surgery (OK, Retin-A, but for me all it did was make my face peel.)
    Grace
  • Hi Grace,
Welcome (or welcome back) to the forum.  You are so right about anti-aging products.   We scientists keep looking for new things but the marketing people are so anxious to launch something, they'll often do it prematurely.
  • Hi

My name is Ed. I work for a lab that specializes in testing cosmetics and consumer products using alternative and in vitro toxicology methods. I stumbled upon your site and find it great that all of you share your experiences with products and advice.
  • Hi Ed,
You must must share with us more of what you do!
  • hello everyone!
my name is sofia. i'm (almost) 30 and i live in new york where i am a student and freelance illustrator.
i am a mascara addict.  i roam the aisles of drugstores looking for the words "EXTREME" and "THICK" and "DRAMATIC". sure i flirt. i mingle with other mascaras, but my go-to mascara is diorshow waterproof. i'd like to NOT buy $23 mascara, but it seems in this case you really get what you pay for. i buy a new drugstore mascara every couple of weeks but none have ever been able to match up to my steady.
i have very fair skin which is prone to rosacea, so i'm always looking to chat with other people with the same problem.
my daily skin regimen is as follows: in the shower i cleanse with Skin Effects Redness Control Calming Gel Cleanser. it's soap free, fragrance free, and made especially for irritated or rosacea prone skin.
after the shower i use Eucerin Redness Relief Daily Perfecting Lotion SPF 15, and Olay Definity Eye Illuminator (i despise my dark circles, but am not convinced any over-the-counter treatment works to help this problem- BeautyBrains? what do you think?)
my nighttime regimene: Cosmedicine Healthy Cleanser & Toner (it was not cheap, but it removes even waterproof mascara without much hassle. it's also weird as you put it on dry skin, but i have no complaints) followed by either MetroLotion (a prescription acne/rosacea lotion which works WONDERS) or Eucerin Redness Relief Soothing Night Creme, which is gloriously thick. when i wake up in the morning my skin looks amazing.
my daytime makeup is rather simple. i don't like to use foundation (too thick and clogs my pores) so i apply a thin layer of L'oreal Bare Naturale Soft-Focus Mineral Finish. a translucent mineral powder with a kabuki brush (NARS Yachiyo 27. much better to use your own kabuki brush than the crappy rat-hair brush included), Mattese brow powder (lasts forever), a few layers of outrageous mascara, and a rotating cast of lipsticks and glosses (Rosebud Salve, Vincent Longo stain in BabyBoo, Covergirl Lipslicks in Edgy, Lola matte lipstick in Sweet Love, Lipstick Queen Red Sinner, Anna Sui Lip gel 203...)
my current concern is my hair which seems to be thinning a bit. i was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (underactive thyroid) which is probably the culprit. eagerly awaiting the Brains findings on treatments which will thicken!
    yours in TMI xoxo,
    sofia

  • Hi Sofia,
Welcome to the Beauty Brains forum.  We continue to look for new technologies to thicken hair but most of what's out there is more marketing fluff than real science.  But if we find something worth having, you'll hear it here on the Beauty Brains first.
