  • Hiya guys! I'm Julie, and I'm 14. I guess I'm young for this website? I love it though, and I love makeup/skincare/hair care.
I went into Sephora two years ago and now I spend a regular amount of time looking at everything. Now I know what y'all are thinking: she's 14! that's too young for all of this. But I only go for the natural look, nothing sophisticated.

I use: (morning) nivea visage pure effect wash off, Maybelline One by One Volum' express, Sephora/Rimmel/Urban Decay eyeliners, Neutrogena healthy skin blends (pure 22)

(night) nivea visage pure effect wash off, Vichy Absolute softness ( makeup remover), neutrogena pink grapefruit body soap.

(hair) Aussie moist shampoo and conditioner, Dessange concentrate of nutrition
  • Hey Julie,
You are very bright and articulate for 14, so most people won't know your age.  But there is no minimum age for this website--I love to see people of all ages join in the discussion.  Welcome!
    Sarah
  • Thanks Sarah! :) it's nice to be welcome.
  • Hi I'm Emma, I'm 22 and from the UK.

I'm obsessed with conditioners, leave in products & coral/peach coloured make up

I don't have blue curls but my favourite breed of dog does (the bedlington terrier) but I do like to have curly hair!
  • Hi Emma,

Welcome!  Do you happen to like Nars orgasm blush?  It's the only peachy toned thing I love.  I'm generally more of a cool or plummy toned person.

    Sarah

  • Hey everyone!

    I'm 22 and I have a couple of obsessions:

    1. Nail polish, especially varying colors of pink.

    2. Hair products that tout words like 'growth' or 'repair'. (I'm such a sucker for those!)

    3. Lip glosses.

I am glad I joined this site. I hope that I can find useful information
to help me grow my hair! I am half German and half Nigerian, so my hair texture is very confusing to deal with. It has been my goal for the past 5 years to grow out my hair, and I have not made any progress, save for maybe 1 inch :(

I have a yellow lab ( I love him so much!), I love painting and playing the piano, and playing video games!

In the morning & night, I wash my face with Neutrogena Deep Clean
and Neutrogena  Oil Free Acne Stress Control. Every couple of days, I
use Queen Helena Mint Juliep Mud Mask.

For my hair, I'm stuck on LoReal's Sulfate Free Shampoo and Conditioner.

    TADA! Ok, I'm done :)

  • Hmmm... I'm Dan.
I work in the financial sector, and outside of work I'm one of two leaders for a fairly large group of alternative lifestyle folks; I help to educate, and organize social gatherings for them. Being involved in that sort of thing, I tend to look a little bit different. I started dying my hair two colors a few years back, and even put it up into a mohawk... I quickly discovered the absolute necessity of using some better quality hair products to keep it looking and feeling good.

I use black dye (clairol) and blue dye (punky) for my hair, and it tends to look VERY good when it's relatively fresh (first couple weeks). I use conditioner every day, alternating between bedhead(with punky color mixed in to help preserve the blue) and loreal colorsafe conditioner. I typically use shampoo once, sometimes twice a week. Hair stays very clean, no hairspray used, just leave in color-safe conditioner to get it styled.

I'm here to ask a few questions and get some advice for making the color stay longer, as well as info on re-bleaching, etc.
  • Hello.

I'm a Swedish girl with a big interest in fashion and science, so this site suits me perfectly. I have just finished my last chemestry course (I have never, ever, studied so intensly before an exam) I'll ever have to study. But, eventhough I was really fed up with organic chemestry for a while, I must admit that I both find it useful and slightly intresting. So I thought I'd combine it with my beauty/fashion interest and ended up here :)
  • Hi, I'm Natasha. I am an aging tomboy who is trying to look less frumpy on any given day. I don't really wear make up, but I am ridiculously vain about my hair. I love this site because I am a sucker for any random claim put on a bottle, but all I really want is to look my best with the least amount of effort.
  • Oh, and by aging I am I'm in my late 20's. Not that I think that is old at all (except in the dark dark scary night), but I do feel its a little old to still be shopping in the men's section 80% of the time cursing these dang hips. :)
  • Hi, my name is Eileen and I have a beauty blog called Pretty in Pink Gloss. Come check me out at http://emanticoff.blogspot.com.
  • Hi Everyone,

Can anyone break down the facts for COR silver the soap?I really trying to find out the whether the soap can deliver silver through their nano technology. Plus, whether it something one should try out i mean does it deliver on its promise . Thanks

  • Hi everyone ,

I am Mahesh . I am 24 and an engineer by profession (more specifically a Mechanical Engineer designing compressors). As I moved away from home for the sake of my job , due to lack of time for personal care and a bad lifestyle have been suffering from hairfall . I have tried hair fall control products of a few brands but with no results . Then I have started surfing the net and experimenting with naturals and found them to be somewhat better . On one of such quests I have stumbled upon a very informative article with scientific reasoning by the Brains and was fascinated by the very idea of the website . Am familiar with organic chemistry and can google up a bit to find something thats new .I find very little time between my Gym And Work schedules for my hair care. Still on my way to find the natural recipe that suits me the best . Good luck to all .

    Cheers,
    Mahesh.

  • Hi everyone,

my name is Mandi, i'm 22 and i study Cosmetic Science (BSc) in London College of Fashion. It is a 4 year course and i start my placement in 2 weeks time! Exciting indeed! I don't really have a routine, i just simply use Clinique's dramatic moisturiser in the morning and night! My skin is so smooth! This cream is highly recommended for people with dry skin. You will see the difference in one day! I personally like to use face creams without parfum because it may cause mild irritation, especially i have sensitive skin :)

Also for smoother skin, i put Johnsons baby oil all over my body after a shower, it makes my skin incredibly smooth.

I try to use minimal make up on a daily basis (days when i don't have university or work i would leave my skin bare) : -

Dior's Foundation - it's not heavy and it allows my skin to breathe!
Rimmel eyebrow pencil - to fill in my eyebrows as it is very light!
Rimmel black liquid eyeliner - i love a simply but thick black liner!
YSL Faux Cils mascara - best mascara i've ever used!
    No7 blusher

    Mandy
  • hello everyone,
I  am a newbie here, nice  to meet you all .
  • Hello everyone,

My name is Denise. I am 55 1/2 years old. I am the mother of two daughters. (25 and 21) I am a corporate trainer and have no formal cosmetics or skin care training.

I have always been interested in skincare and makeup. At the age of 12 I began washing my face with Noxema, and moisterized daily with a variety of body lotions and witch hazel toner. Fortunately, I have rarely suffered from acne and have primarily had clear skin. As a younger women, I had combination skin. As I age my complexion appears to be more normal/dry - though my face is rarely tight.

I am extremely interested in anti-aging skincare and age appropriate cosmetic products. I also take bio-identical harmones for overall long term health and vitality. I am interested in fragrance, cosmetics, and all things "beauty." As a a women of color, I am interested in skincare and treatments that are appropriate for my special skincare needs and those of my daughters.

Basically, I would like to learn and increase my knowledge; therefore, enabling me to make better purchases with greater results. Currently I use the following products. ( a hodge-podge) I change often and currently have no particular loyalty.

    Purity One-step facial Cleanser

    Clarisonic Mia

    Boots No 7 (AM)

Aveno Smart Essential SPF 30 moisturizer

    PM:

    Purity Cleaner

    SkinMedica Retinol Complex

Miscellaneous Antioxidant cream from a local day spa

    Makeup: Bare Minerals

  • Hi all! I'm Jo, 24 years old, living in Belgium and working in data management (are you asleep yet?). I'm a former make-up junkie, I used to buy absolutely anything and everything as long as it was new and shiny. When I met my boyfriend, he told me that 'when you put on all that stuff, you don't look like some super model or a bombshell or something, you just look like a pretty girl with too much make-up on'. That one stuck :). I guess I was ready for a change myself, too, so I stopped dying my hair, stopped using a ton of products and chucked about 2/3ds of my make-up collection. These days, want to redeem myself by being a very critical and knowing consumer. Plus, I love sharing tips with other ladies!

Night-time moisturizer: coconut oil or Dr. Hauschka's Daily moisturizing cream
Daytime moisturizer: Dr. Hauschka's daily moisturizing cream and Rivella's suntanning lotion (SPF 20)
Foundation: Bourjois Bio Detox or Bourjois Healthy Mix
Blush: any sort of stain, I don't do touch up and powders just don't last on me
    Eyebrows: MAC's eyebrow pencil
    Concealer: MAC's studio finish
    Powder: Lily Lolo Minderal foundation

Mascara, lipliner, lipstick and lipgloss I change up quite a lot. I hardly wear eyeshadow anymore(probably about 5 times a year).

Shampoo: Yes To Carrots Daily Shamoo/Naturtint Shampoo
Conditioner: Yes to Carrots Daily Conditioner/Ultra Doux Camomille Conditioner
    Deep conditioner: Organic Coconut Oil

Body butter: Le Petit Marseillaise Argan Body Butter

    Heat protectant: Got2Be Guardian Angel

    Leave-in conditioner: Organic Coconut Oil

    Woop!

  • Christopher here; I'm a Flash web developer in the world of beauty, fashion, and health and wellness, among others... looking to get a bit more involved in the community aspect of the world, get more direct feedback from the people who would be going to those types of sites, and - if it's okay - showcase some new beauty products, fashion lines, and such to those who would be interested in that sort of thing.

Incidentally I also live with extremely sensitive skin, and have survive 2 skin diseases, so I have experience in that side of things as well, with valuable advice to give from my experiences. So, talk to you soon!
  • Hello! I'm an aspiring cosmetic chemist, and I love cosmetics and hair products! I have since I was little. :)

I'm excited to look around this site and get advice!

  • Hi! I'm Carmen and I love to read cosmetic labels :) I have a huge list of allergies so I always need to be careful to what I put on my skin. I'm also learning to make my own, which is fun, but sometimes I get bored so I buy new stuff. Especially like 'natural' personal care.
  • Hi, my name is Margaret, but I go by Mintaka or MintakaFive online in a lot of places. I'm 21 years of age and currently finishing up a BA in linguistics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a minor in French. I love learning languages of all types (programming languages as well as natural ones) as well as constructing artificial ones in my spare time. My dad's a professor of organic chemistry so I have a base knowledge of that type of thing.

My interest in beauty products is mostly focused on health and ethical issues. I also enjoy keeping my body healthy in every way possible, but the aesthetics of cosmetics is also really fun for me.

My routines for myself are very simple. I usually just wash my face with water and use a light moisturizer. My skin's pretty well behaved, for whatever reason. I'm very pale though, partially due to genes and partially because I live in Alaska where there is little sunlight in the winter. I'm fine with this though.
  • Hi I'm Sara, I've just become and member and wanted to say hi!

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. I re trained as a Beauty Therapist 6 years ago after deciding to give up my long term career in my family's Marketing Business. How I wish I'd done it years ago. 2 years ago after leaving one of the top salons in Newcastle I set up on my own and now have a gorgeous, tranquil home based salon and it works perfectly for me and my young family. I absolutely love what I do.

I have a real passion for natural beauty, using food for health & beauty and alternative therapies. I absolutely loving helping people with their health and beauty problems the natural way and hearing the positive stories about how they have worked.

A lot of my knowledge has been picked up over the years from friends, families, colleagues and alternative practitioners and of course my trade! My friends and clients are always asking me "Sara what can you suggest for X" so I thought rather than just telling them, to make my advice accessible to all so I have just started my own blog.

I always always cleanse, use facial oil, tone and moisturise morning and night and stay out of the sun's most harmful rays.

I'm not a massive make up fan as I have super sensitive eyes but do love make up and everything beauty.

I am a book worm and love food and cooking and have a real weakness for chocolate and cupcakes!

    Think that's about it.

    Speak soon
    Sara x
  • Hi guys!
I've been reading the blog for a few years and am mainly interesting in the chemistry, from a purely lay persons perspective! I do have a sciencey background but mainly in veterinary medicine, so not very cosmetic based!

  • Hello everyone! Just wanna say that I am new here but I am already loving it... This blog/forum is amazing. It opened my eyes on so many things. Thank You!

  • Hey there community!
My name is Anna. I'm 24 years old from Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm a graphic designer, I love painting and drawing, singing, running, and TV. I have always been an insatiable learner and am addicted to information (science, history, geography, politics, everything!). I'm a redhead with very sensitive, fair skin and cystic acne (moderate), so I'm pretty familiar with ingredients lists. I've never been to a Dermatologist, because I'm po folk and derms in Cincinnati are hard to come by even if you have insurance. This has led to a lot of experimentation which is finally starting to pay off somewhat (thanks to the internet and my powers of deduction). I look forward to getting to know you guys!
  • Hi everyone!  My name is Emily, and I'm 21.  I love this site and will be checking it daily! :)
  • I'm Kate and I'm a 23 year old finishing up her aerospace engineering degree. I live in St. Louis, MO with my awesome car-obsessed (and make-up loathing) boyfriend. I work part time as a quality engineer but that's boring, let me tell you about what make-up I love! Mostly Urban Decay, Too Faced, Makeup Forever, and brands from Sephora but I also love British brands like Eyeko and Jelly Pong Pong as well as some Japanese brands like kate and Majolica Majorca. I used to work as a SA at LUSH in our local mall and I was a holiday hire...I LOVED it but that basically qualifies me for Lushie status, lol.

I would love to be a product inventor and come up with great natural-ish formulas for soap and shampoo.... I've got an obsession with chemistry though I didn't study it in school!
  • Hello everyone,.. I am Tara, 30yr, I live in WA. Just starting to get religious about my skin care routine.looking forward to getting to know you all.
  •  Hello everyone,

Wow! you all sound so intelligent that i was tempted just to lurk as I am quite a shy person really and didn't want to appear thick!  However, you guys all sound so friendly that I am prepared to venture out with my intro!  I live in the UK, am married with two big girls.  I have been in the beauty industry for about 25 years having worked in and owned my own salons.  I then gained teaching and assessing qaulifications spending many years in further education colleges teaching and designing courses whilst simultaneously running a cosmetic clinic with my doctor partner of that time.  I currently use my experience to work as an international examiner.

Some years ago I was fortunate to be involved in research into skin lasering (Co2) with an eminant UK dermatologist who pioneered a cooling device where clients could undergo full/part facial treatments with little or no anaesthesia (it worked).  Obviously i took advantage of this "perk" and i am the proud owner of skin which constantly receives compliments and most people think i am at least 10-15 years younger than i really am (ancient!). 15 years on it still looks as good although i have always looked after my skin.

About 4 years ago, i completed and passed the Cosmetic Science Diploma theory section, but didn't complete the practical aspect as i needed a company placement and was not able to fulfil this whilst teaching full time hence i am a frustrated cosmetic scientist!  I did however, gain certifications in the practical formulation of basic  beauty, hair and soap products which i loved and am passionate about ingredients and an avid label reader (which i don't always understand).  I would love to stay on home soil and teach others how to make their own basic products.

I can't remember how i came across this forum but so glad i did as i feel like i am "home" amongst like-minded people.  I want to learn from you all and would like to contribute if i can.  I look forward to regular contact with pleasure.

  • @Orchidstar: I'm really glad you decided to stop "lurking!" It sounds like you're perfect for our Forum!
  • Thank you, Right Brain.  I look forward to a long relationship on the forum!
  • Hi Im Katrina from philippines. I love reading blogs, forum, dIscussions and reviews about beauty tips and weight loss since that is my issue. Everytime i bought something i always read reviews if it is effective or not. So, now that i found this website it makes me want to write. And i like the title of your website....
  • Hello!

I've been reading this for a while, and I enjoy the fact-based reporting with science helping to find answers. Cosmetic science is really interesting and I feel more savvy because I read this blog, hehe. In general, I like to learn new things that help me make better choices. Money saved, beauty optimized, and new products learned about.

As for me, I'm a geeky lady but I love hair makeup and nails. There's a lot of weird stereotypes out there that women aren't like that, and I like to use my voice to make the weird bridge between nerdy culture and looking and feeling awesome.

Just "more awesome" in general is always great, don't you think? Hehe.
  • Hello!

My name is Sarah and I'm a 30 year old SAHM and student. I stumbled upon here trying to answer the highly debated cliche, "Do some conditioners contain wax?" after being talked into some pricey conditioner while having a trim. I fell in love with the site!

I adore Sephora, but love getting a great deal too. I scour the internet to compare prices (with the exception of my impulse buy at the salon), and sometimes buy high end beauty products on eBay.

My daily regimen is Benefit Porefessional pore minimizer or a primer depending on the day. I am a frequent user of Retin A .01% which I use more frequently than suggested. I use it for 4 days straight, when I have downtime for the peeling to subside. It takes about 5 days for the peeling to stop and for me to be able to wear makeup without looking like I have dandruff on my face. I swear, people at the grocery store probably think I'm a leper during those times, but that's okay! The things we do for beauty. Once the peeling subsides, I use St Tropez sunless tanner for a week or so, and begin the process again as time persists. I'm convinced that because of acne scarring I obtained during my teenage years, if I don't use Retin A rigorously, I will not penetrate deep enough into the skin tissue to fix the scarring. So far, my efforts have been in vain. I try to use Retin A as a chemical peel, but I'm not getting the results I want. I do love how my skin looks, but there are still scars. My husband and family swear they don't see it, but the scars really are there. This is not a case of body dysmorphic disorder, but I admit, the problem is probably worse to me than to other people. In any case, if anyone has any tips or advice about the use of tretinoin (Retin A), or wants to correct me if using it as a chemical peel is a fallacy, I'm all ears.

Thanks, and it's a pleasure to check out the site!
    Sarah
  • Hi all, I'm Rachel, 33, mum of three young children. I've been on MUA for years and years because I have always been interested in makeup, hair, and other self-beautifying topics.. I also have a curious mind and am always trying to research some science behind how things work. Unfortunately I have never been a hardworking student in high school and although I was interested in Science from a very young age (and read lots of science encyclopaedias and things for fun) I never did go on to University to do science but opted for Arts instead (not to say that Arts was easy, but it's much easier to me because I can blag...that, and I was only interested in partying back then, surprise surprise... ) I wanted to study perfumery in France at one point, after I'd become a mother, because I was obsessed with scent and I wasn't a party animal anymore so felt I could settle down to do some serious studying, but I decided it was just one of those things I'd have to give up because my duty first and foremost is with my children and it just wasn't possible financially for us to move to France for a long course just for that. I also have an interest in nutrition and one of my dream careers is becoming a nutritionist. Now I'm thinking of doing a Science degree through the Open University so that I can then later maybe pursue a Postgraduate course in biochemistry or health sciences. I stumbled into Beauty Brains by accident, whilst researching whether thermal protection haircare products are a necessity or will just a regular conditioner or hair oil do...  Anyway, I have more questions, so will be asking some soon :)

  • Hello!

I'm Amanda, a 20 year old college student studying nutrition after going to culinary school.

I got into cosmetics about 2 1/2 years ago, I don't even remember how it all started!
I've been keeping a blog for about the past year and a half now, Beautifully Sweet.

I don't remember how I found this site, but I love it.  As a nutrition major, I'm really into science and the blog and forum are perfect!

  • I am a cosmetology student and an avid beauty lover. I love everything to do with makeup, skincare, ingredients, etc. I want to get better at understanding ingredients and knowing how they work together and alone. I eventually want to own my own salon and be very well educated in this field. I wish there was a Bachelor's degree of cosmetology! I came across The Beauty Brains on Amazon when they suggested that I might like their "Can you get addicted to lip gloss" book and then I eventually visited their site. I absolutely love it and really feel like I am in the hands of true scientists who have a passion for cosmetic chemistry.
  • Hi! I'm Suze from the Netherlands. This year I started Liberal Arts at Utrecht University. Right now I'm enrolled in subjects on English and Linguistics. So I don't have any background in chemistry, but I do love hair care and natural products. I like to know what's in the stuff I use on my hair and skin:) I also love DIY: I make my own face masks, deap-treatments for my hair and henna mixes. This is because I have very dry and sensitive skin and I am allergic to many skin care products.

Every morning and evening I wash my face with warm water. Then I use mix some KTC coconut oil with some aloe vera gel (Fruit of the Earth)  and a regular drug store moisturiser (a Dutch brand you wouldn't know anyway, but it's nice because there's no perfume or sensitisers in it.) and use it on my face and neck.

For my body I mostly use ''La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume AP'', a true silicone bomb. But It works perfectly for dry itching skin:)

I am a natural hair care geek. I wash it every 5 days with a sulfate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner. I use henna every month and a home made hair oil with cloves and castor oil before every wash.

  • Hi everyone,
I'm newbie. I'm a student and i'm 21 years old. Well, i've known this forum through a search engin called google when i'm searching a forum of beauty, make up. cosmetic and some thing like that. I feel that this forum is full of information and people seem to be friendly.
I often use a pink lip-stick and suncreen when i have to go out. As a result, i find that i have no change, boring and i want to change. I want to get good advise from people. Thanks
    Best regards,
    Simmons
  • Hi! I'm Stephanie, alias "eight" on my blog. I live in Atlantic Canada in a province that has no Sephoras or MAC counters ;) I'm 23, married, a cat lover (with no cats!), and I want to blog for a living.

I love indie beauty products, but I also like to try out things from the drugstore and occasionally high-end. I buy a lot of my beauty items online and I love finding deals and free things. I try to be critical with products I use and not fall for misleading claims.

I don't have a set moisturizing regimen (I'm still looking for the perfect products), but I am in love with One Hand Washes the Others' Black Magic cleanser and the scrub of the same name. OHWTO is an indie company and those products are chock-full of awesome ingredients -- plus they're inexpensive! I can't recommend them enough.

Happy to be here! Thanks Beauty Brains for having this awesome site.
