So the holidays are fast approaching and everyone's making out their wish lists. I'm making two, one that I'll give to my family and one that I keep to myself since I alway buy myself a present or two (hey! my birthday's in December so I have an excuse). I put the really frivolous, girly stuff that I'd be too embarrassed to ask my mother-in-law to get on the "me" list. I put more "practical", easier-to-buy stuff on the "them" list.
The "me" list is heavy with perfume this year. I'm thinking of going on line and ordering a sample of every perfume I've ever wanted to try. Or maybe I'll just buy myself a really nice bottle of perfume. Or maybe both. Or maybe I'll just hit every makeup counter in every store and buy all the eye shadows, glosses and lipsticks that I've been eyeing. Or maybe a really gorgeous pair of black pumps, which I actually need. The "them" list has lots of books, some of them are very expensive because their out-of-print, some sweaters, some accessories and lots of yarn. I realize it's not very exciting, but I love to knit.
So what's on your list? Am I the only one with two lists? What would you buy yourself if money were no object? Do you have the nerve to ask your spouse for something that will require him to shop at the makeup counter? (I don't. My husband would rather spend more money if it means he can order it on-line and believe me, I take advantage of this.)
Thats funny the whole two lists thing. I always have such a hard time comingup with something to put on my lists. I generally ask for something electronic from my husband. I feel bad sending him to Victoria's Secret or the make-up counter...he would have no clue anyway he's colorblind. But he does take me shopping...like girly shopping for my birthday sometimes and really likes to be there with me... This year I asked for a Garmin GPS system for the car. Yeah I got my present early!
I was just thinking about guilty pleasures this morning and was going to start a thread...you beat me to it PR.
If money were no object I know I'd have a lot of REALLY expensive shoes and handbags. Oh to have a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes..*sigh*
This could be a fun thread. I just kind of woke up from a catnap...so I'm groggy.
On my fantasy list would be an all-expense trip to London, Paris, or Venice. Travel always trumps everything else for me except with art books being a close second.
On my real list would be books, gift cards, and a day spa certificate. Since I am SUCH a bad shopper I am always glad when someone gets me clothes they think I would like and usually DO.
I have a third list...what I need. New glass frames, new comfortable casual shoes, and DSL for the blasted Mac. I will have to give these to myself if I want them.
well,
I want a pair of sexy, bronze, peep toe pumps
have the image in my brain but haven't found them yet
purplerules, you can get the sephora fragance sampler, it has 12 samples and includes a certificate to get the one you like the most
I think it's a terrific idea, you can go home try them, wear them for a day and see how it smells on your skin
I will also love to get me private pilates sessions in NYC with a top instructor, they are 120 bucks a pop, and way to expensive for me right now
but I'll totally make the trip from philly if Santa gifted me those, it will be a dream come true
Them: Personalized Sationary, a Le Creuset dutch oven, Brita to go sports bottle (the water at works is TERRIBLE), DVDs, Gift Certificates (GAP, Sephora, Pier One etc...)
Me: Super Sexy stilettos..not sure on color, but I'll know when I see, a lovely pair of diamond earrings (I have a pair that I got from my sweetie 5 years ago, but I want another pair), a month long (at least) trip to Europe, a new kitchen with amazing granite counter tops and a dishwasher that stays in it's place and not fall out when the top or bottom is too heavy. A new car..a Mini Cooper...they are too cute and oh so me!
I may get the shoes and kitchen (we plan on doing that this Spring...although maybe not with granite...*sigh*)
oooh I just found the CUTEST girl stuff for the Steeler fan in me. I love shopping for my man because I ALWAYS find something Steelers for me too! Add that to MY list!
Also Alyssa Milano has a Super cute line of girl sports clothing.
I think it's called Touch by Alyssa Milano and I also think it is just for baseball, but I saw the CUTEST hoodie in BC Sports for the Philadelphia Phillies. I ALMOST bought it and now I'm kicking myself for not.
You can buy stuff at MLB.com (Who would have thought we'd have that website up here?) It's hard to find internet stuff about it. It's pretty fresh and I think I read somewhere that she wants to expand into other sports
Karen
lululemon is the cutest workout wear ever, and it's like a cult in the dance,Pilates and Yoga circle
if you don't wear "lulu" you are a nobody
It's a bit pricey, but the fabric is amazing, moisture wicking but still soft
and they have amazing styles for pants, tanks and so on, that look good but are incredibly comfortable
it's canadian, they have started opening US stores in the last couple of years
I use to go to NYC to get it, but now they opened a showroom in Philly, and I am afraid to go
not sure if my credit card can handle it, everything is amazing (did I mentioned the gym bags, totally cute)
you can check their website to see if they have a store near you, but I warn you it's addictive

OK...if we are now talking clothes...I would love to have a gift certificate for a shopping spree at Eileen Fisher...I just LOVE her fabrics and colors. They are to die for!
fitness brain, Lucia is a lovely name =) I have an obsession with names ending in -ia..... Anyway, here's what's on my "Dream On" list- a new house! Yes, I am dying to move out of my apartment so I've been jokingly asking people to contribute to my New House fund. Well, wishful thinking aside, some more attainable Wish List items are some more boots (love vintage boots of all colors), a new digital camera and new running shoes.
bobanerd--you and I kind of want the same thing. I want a new kitchen and you want a new house! I think I really am getting the kitchen though in the spring. We'll see though AND do I have to eat out every night for dinner? That's gonna suck on the wallet...grr. I guess as long as it's sushi I'm ok
We're definitely replacing all of our appliances in February. If we can swing it, we'll replace cabinets, countertops and the floor too. (We really need to redo our bathrooms but that's not as much fun.) My husband's more excited about the kitchen than I am because he does all the cooking. I'm very excited about a new washer and dryer since I really like doing the laundry. Weird, huh?
PurpleRules--too funny. I hate laundry, I have to not only do mine, but I have to do it at work too...ugh
We just had all of that stuff done. We now have our finished basement...complete with bar, bathroom, flat screen tv and surround sound...oh and my small unfinished laundry room (which does have a new washer and dryer), we went from having 1.5 bathrooms to 3.5 in the house, and had our bedroom redone with a walk-in closet and a picture window...it's amazing.
We have lived here for 5 years now almost every room is done except the kitchen and living room. It's been a long process, but worth it in the end :)
Our laundry room is on the first floor and that makes all the difference. Plus, there's something about a stack of clean, neatly folded clothing that makes me happy. I even enjoy ironing.
A flat screen TV, I forgot about that. I'll put that on my list. Everyone in my family would like it.
but who the hell can afford a house in LA anymore? ones in not so scary neighborhoods cost over a mil, and they're just standard 4/5 bedroom houses with 2.5 bathrooms..
oh well, there's always condos.. but then who in their right mind would spend 1/2 a mil on a 2 bedroom condo with NO yard space and NO privacy??
taiwanesegurl--my sister used to live in San Diego and I can recall a conversation I had with her husband. He said they would probably never be homeowners living in there. I remember being really sad for them because my house(s) in MD and here in PA (we've only had 2) are simply amazing. Sadly his father died and they moved from SD to Florida to be closer to his mother BUT after 6 months they bought their first house (that's a good thing!).
Yikes...I feel your pain about CA housing prices. I have lived in Valencia, La Jolla, and now San Mateo.
We finally bought something but yes it is a condo with no yard (Yipee for me...but we do have a tree within our patio area that my husband seems to enjoy trimming so this works for us). Because there is no more land to develop on the Peninsula we can only hope we will be able to sell the condo and then move to...uh...someplace cheaper in our golden years. Probably in a trailer in the Mohave Desert with our luck!!!
ALL I REALLY WANT FOR CHRISTMAS is...DSL! Pathetic isn't it? The VCR/DVD broke last month so I need one of those too.
Flat screens, plasma TVs? I STILL have my 19-inch 35 year old Sony color TV that works just fine even though the cable guys laugh hysterically when they come to install the cable.
Well
we used to live in San Francisco and could not even dream about buying anything
now we have a little apartment in PA
and I really got into HGTV, I can totally get exited about cabinets and appliances
the good thing is that they let me pick everything, even the floor plan
my husband got his plasma and direct TV with DVR, so he is happy about that
we have some issues with the house, as usual for first time buyers
but I am pretty happy with the place
we will probably have our housewarming party early january
Well, the cost of a condo in Central NJ ain't so cheap either. I'm looking to spend 300K to 400K for just a two bdrm/two bath. It's really strange how much people will pay to live in a zip code associated with a certain university.... I'm looking into a condo for myself (sigh) with a garage.
OK...let me add to my fantasy wish list...a fairy godmother who would pay my mortgage payments for one year. Wow that would free up lots more money for travel and wrinkle cream!!
I will like that too
or maybe to win some kind of contest that offers the same thing
what about winning the lottery?
And talking about total fantasy, a pair of Christian Louboutins
I just changed my hair color, for the 4th time
I was a redhead for 10 years, then went with highlights, back to my natural brown, now back to highlights, I think it looks nice and my husband loves it
so another thing for the wish list, Alessandra D'ambrosio's hair
although I am getting pretty close, almost there
Since we're being totally unrealistic... I'd like hair the color of Julianne Moore's. I don't want her hair; it's colored and chimically straightened so it's got to be in horrible condition but I'd like the hair growing out of my head to be the color of hers.
I'd like to be on "What Not to Wear" without actually being on "What Not to Wear". In other words, I want the $5000, a couple of days to shop with Stacy and Clinton, and makeup and hair with Carmindi and Nick but I don't want to throw my clothes out and I don't want to be humiliated on national TV.
My sister decided that the solution to all of her problems was an appointment with Nick. She figured if he did her hair once, she could go back to Dallas and have her stylist there copy the cut and color... $500. I pointed out that at least she wouldn't have to tip.
Oooh, Purple, that would be so great. I always wanted a makeover. Everytime I go to a new hair stylist, which is very often since I moved a year and a half ago and haven't found "the one," I ask them what they think I should do, whether in terms of color or cut and they just look at me and shrug, like I'm crazy for asking. Aren't they supposed to be able to give opinions of hair cuts and colors based on face shape, hair texture, skin tone and such? I've never had a stylist like that. I like to change my hair often (I just chopped off about 6 inches of hair last week!), but I can never find someone who will give an opinion. I just want someone to make me over, damnit!
I was blonde a year ago, but now I'm back to my natural very dark brown. I kind of want to do red with blonde highlights, but I wear a lot of pink and I think that hair color might clash with a large portion of my wardrobe.
My fantasy wishlist for Christmas? Hmm.. an extra week to finish writing my papers this semester would probably top that list, but of course I would just continue to procrastinate like I'm doing now. A car would be great since I left my car at home when I moved half way across the country (it would have never made the trip  ). I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a Dodge Charger... with a hemi. A $1000 gift card to Sephora would be nice and another $500 for MAC. Oooh! and a whole new wardrobe that I get to pick out with a top stylist.
I would love a personal trainer! My coworker recently worked out with a personal trainer, and she's totally loving it. They are sooo expensive though!!
As red hair with pink clothes would not clash. 1/2 of my wardrobe is pink, and nobody has said "ew.. your hair and your clothes clash."
I share your frustration with asking stylists for help. I think they are too afraid to suggest any real changes for fear that if you don't like it you will not come back or worse tell others that you didn't like his/her services.
MAKEOVER...SCHMAKOVER...I would like to have a time machine to send me back 20 years so I could do some things BETTER....professionally and personally.
Thanks for the tip, TG. I was trying to picture red hair with pink clothes and for some reason it wasn't looking so great in my head. I'm thinking red-red, like really red with the hot pink clothes that I tend to wear...
I just chopped my hair off last week, so it will be a little bit before I feel the need for change again, but I think when that time comes around (prob in a couple of months) I'll do the red with blonde highlights. It's not like it's forever!
Judy, you're probably right. I just wish I could get a real opinion, though! I know there are people who do that, so where do I find them?
I wear pink all the time with red hair. Years ago when I first started nannying I had just started dying my hair red and the little girl was a natural redhead....*lucky* and people used to tell me my daughter looked exactly like me! I would have complete strangers come up to us in the mall to tell us how pretty mom and baby were! Hysterical! I was 18 and still carrying the "V" card!
I gave up my red hair 6 months ago for highlights
I do not wear much pink though, I just can't figure out how to wear it
I am more of a chocolate, black grey kind of girl
I am leaving tomorrow for the holidays
so happy holidays everyone!!
WOW Cate! We were once neighbors! I wonder if I ever walked/drove by you in Princeton.... of course, you are smart and now live in Pennsylvania. Hope your commute is not too bad (route 1, arghhh).
To everyone, I wish you a healthy, happy holidays!!
bobanerd--it sucks--my commute still. 95N to the Scudder Falls Bridge is hell without a real traffic pattern. Sometimes it takes me 35 minutes and other times it takes well over an hour.
Istill love Princeton though...very cute stores and good food
