Stress
  • We all know that stress is bad for us; it can affect our sleep patterns, complexion, and overall health. So, I want to know how everyone deals with stress. I'm currently in graduate school and the coping strategies I have used up until now are starting to...uh... not work so well. *coughfailcough* Eek! I've noticed I've been more restless and anxious lately. I suspect I might not be doing enough physically (reading and shifting textbooks doesn't count as exercise, unfortunately) but I'm interested in what everyone else does to blow off steam. I know I'll get through this, but I love me some advice!

    Thanks in advance!
  • Yup, stress stress stress! What I do is spend my time with my dog, which is the moment that I feel happiest. Everyone's way of dealing with stress is different, so u have to find out what is best for u :) or another way is to smile no matter what happens :D research shows that smiling can boost happiness even when u're faking it! Hope this helps XD
  • Exercise helps me to relax. There's nothing better than a decent workout. ;-)
  • Thanks for the input so far. I definitely feel better after exercise, but it is kind of hard to squeeze in sometimes. If I could read and walk comfortably at the same time I'd study at the gym, lol.
  • I talk to friends and family.  I'm one of those people who drives everyone else crazy when I'm stressed lol.
  • Like Sarah I talk to friends and family. I also chat online with friends and family. I sometimes 'escape' into movies. I read fiction. I go for a walk. Sometimes nothing clears your head like going for a walk and just mulling things over as you go.
  • I treat myself to a spa. Or sometimes I go out with friends, hang out.
  • Stress is one of the main factor causing illness. Sometimes I reduce stress by focusing breathing only for a while thinking all the negative energy is going out by exhale and cleansing energy by inhale.
Stress blocks the body energy flow..that's why it makes people ill.
According to this fact, acupuncture is very valuable treatment to try, because acupuncture is very good to circulate blood, energy and body fluid.
So it's good for the skin problems, too.
  • Thanks everyone for your input! I'm actually going to try Tai Chi. Classes don't start for it until September, so I really just need to hang in there with my normal stuff until then.
  • I take multiple naps through out the day especilly when my work load is big and tedious. I usualky don; snooze for more than 25-30 minutes, otherwise you end up waking up groggy if you sleep for ore than 40 minutes. I also take breaks inbetween by watching an episode of the daily show or colbert report or modern family. They're all on hulu so it's free and they're only 22 minutes long, so it's a nice break from work, really clears my head. Hope this helps!
  • The nap idea works really well. I set a timer to make certain I don't sleep too long myself. Recently I read that you should drink a caffeinated beverage (coffee anyone?) then go to sleep. Sounds weird, but apparently the caffeine will kick in after about 30 minutes and you will wake up lots less groggy. ;-)
  • That's a good idea. Sometimes it is hard for me to chill enough to take a nap. Of course, one of my classes this semester looks rather boring...maybe I'll just read the textbook before hand. =)

Lindygirl -- that is a very interesting idea, I'll have to try a coffee experiment sometime. I'd have to drink it quick though...maybe an espresso shot?
  • That could work!
  • I'm a very stressed out person, so I've tried about everything! What really helps me is to get out a coloring book and color. I know it's childish, but for some reason I can release nervous energy that I've built up all day by scribbling on a page. Plus after you finish, then you have a pretty picture with bright colors to look at!
I also chew gum right when I get in the car and chew through school, appointments (unless it's a dental appt!) and waiting on people.
  • I used to color all the time! I hadn't thought of that. We seem to forget the simply joys in life when we get busy and bogged down. Maybe I should pick up a coloring book some time, hehe.

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate all the advice.
