off topic--mixing darks and whites

edited February 2014 in Ask the Beauty Brains
Okay, since you guys are chemists, I thought you might know the answer to this one.  I have always separated my darks and whites.  But recently, I got lazy and started mixing in some whites in with my colors.  But I do them on cold wash-cold rinse.  If I don't use warm water, will the colors still fade the whites?

  • "Will the colors still fade the whites?"

Do you mean will the dye from the colored fabrics leach out and end up on the white fabrics?

We're not laundry chemists so I really don't know. I guess it depends on the type of fabric, the kind of dye, and the age/number of washings the items of clothing have had.

A brand new pair of dark blue jeans will lose more dye than a 2 year old green t-shirt that's been washed 50 times.
  • Thanks for responding.  Like I said, pretty off topic:)
