Primer or tinted moisturiser?
  • I've been trying to find the best non-foundation way to make my mineral makeup look smoother and stay on longer. I have combination, very sensitive skin and foundation just feels thick and makes me break out. I tried (and LOVED) Tarte's Clean Slate primer on my eyes during a demo at Sephora but I was wondering if there were cheaper alternatives that wouldn't irritate my face. Could you do a review of primers vs. tinted moisturizers and suggest a few winners?
  • My experience is limited, but I can share my experience with you. A long while back I got a sample of philosophy's the present clear makeup with a purchase from Sephora. I tried it and liked it. At $25 for 2 oz. it IS pricier than my normal makeup products but that 2 oz. tube will last me, with daily use, for an entire year. I have stayed with it because it works for me.

I clean my face, apply my sunblock, give that 3-5 minutes to absorb, then apply the present. You have to make sure you wait at least 2 minutes for that to set. Then apply your mineral make-up. Without primer I simply cannot use mineral make-up (I use the inexpensive Maybelline brand). When I first apply the powder it looks great but after a few hours I have little pools of oil standing in my pores. Not the look I am going for at all. With the primer though? Wow. What a difference. My make-up stays smooth all day. I do have to blot once during the day depending on how warm and humid the weather happens to be that day. In cooler weather it stays put all day with no problems.

My daughter uses the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer tinted moisturizer which has the added benefit of having an spf of 20. It looks great on her. She uses a translucent powder over it to set.

    Hope that helps!
  • Avon MagiX Face Perfector works great for me, makes my skin so smooth and silky, worked the same
in winter too which i just couldnt believe! I have the same kind of skin type as you and this doesnt seem to be causing issues.
  • I had the same problem a couple of months ago! Usually I don't wear foundation because I don't need much coverage, but I DO wear powder everyday. I recommend Rimmel London Fix & Perfect primer. It makes your skin so soft, and it is also tinted. It's like a tinted moisturizer and primer in one! If you like more high end products, I would recommend Smashbox Photo Finish Light primer. Its not tinted, but it makes my face so smooth and it noticeably reduces pore size. They both do a really great job of making my makeup stay on all day long! Hope I helped! :)
  • Since I wrote the post above I have changed primers. I now use Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel as a primer. A 1.5 oz. tube is $8.50. Definitely an off-label use for the product! It works for me though.
