Has anyone tried any natural, home remedies for coloring their hair? I'm wondering about henna or honey. I'm usually a mousy, icky, dirty blonde color, but I get my hair highlighted every couple months. I wish there were a way to just brighten it up ever so slightly that wouldn't be as damaging (or as expensive!) as going in for highlights. What do you girls think?
Well, I dye my hair darker and I used herbs, plus tea glosses, etc to tint my hair darker for a while when I was trying not to dye my hair with chemical dyes- it worked, but was rather drying to my hair. But that was due the tannins in the tea I believe- which can be very drying. I've never heard anyone saying that honey did the same thing to their hair (drying). If you go on the longhaircommunity forums- one of the girls there has a long post devoted entirely to listing all kinds of natural/home remedies to dye/highlight, etc hair. I remember reading it and it was very informative and thorough post- you might want to take a look at that too.
If you have a wild oats grocery store near you (or whole foods might carry it too)- check out a company that makes organic (well, whatever "organic' really means anyway ) hair dye- "tints of nature"
here's their product page:

I've used both their semi perm & permanent dyes at home & I really like them alot! (They have highlighting kits too) Plus the shampoo & conditioner packets they include- are to die for! I looooooooove their conditioner. Makes my hair feel heavenly.
The term "organic" of course, as all beauty brainacs know- is a loaded and relative term  , but they don't use amonia in their dye- so your bathroom doesn't stink to high heaven when you're doing your hair and I've had great success with their dyes, so that might be another option for you to think about as well.
Wow, thanks for the link, sylvie! That was a really helpful response, and now I have all sorts of things to investigate. I've never been to this hair forum, but it's pretty extensive! Not getting any work done tonight!
It's not so important to me whether the dye is organic or not, but I'm curious if these things might be gentler than hair dye. It seems like anything you use to change your hair color must damage it to some extent, but this forum seems to be saying that something like honey wouldn't be that bad? Maybe I will volunteer as the guinea pig for this experiment and let you guys know how it works.
I like your idea of trying tea. I just want to add a little "oomph" to the color, so maybe this would work.
If you would like your hair to be lighter, you'll need to have an alkalizing agent in the dye.. aka mmonia.. however, for a tone on tone color or to go darker you can use those "ammonia free" dye kits. They are direct dyes and merely stain your hair. Careful though, some of them may be unpredictable, and you will undoubtably cover those expensive highlights with any color that is darker than them. Even if the box says "multi-tonal" or "glaze." this may cause problems in the future if you are loading up layers upon layers of color and then go to the salon to have your highlights put back in. Henna is one of the worst things to lift out successfully while maintaining the integrity of the hair. The only thing worse is kool-aid:)
Sticking with the natural things to color your hair theme.
You can actually use fruit juices like Grape, cranberry, blueberry, etc. Plus different teas work.
Unfortunately, you have to leave the color on your hair for much longer than standard hair colors and the exact color you end up with might be a little blotchy. But it will work & probably last longer.
Will kool-aid work as a hair color? I know you can use it to dye wool. Just curious; I'm not thinking of trying it although black cherry colored hair could be awesome.
I haven't exactly tried Kool-aid but if it dyes wool, it will dye hair. To get it to work, you'll just have to soak your hair in it for a while (like over an hour).
Here's a fun experiment for you the next time you get your hair cut.
Collect some of the clippings and put it in a jar of Kool-aid and let it soak for an hour or two. Then take it out, wash it once with shampoo and see what the color looks like. This is actually a great method to give yourself an idea of what your hair would look like if you used any of these natural coloring methods.
Have fun!
Gidget will highlight my hair tomorrow. (And I must say she is GREAT!!!) I'll ask but I'm pretty sure it was tongue-in-cheek humor on the Kool-aid tip.
Well I got my hair color done yeaterday, and I finally achieved the color I wanted
I took 3 hours, some highltights, some permanent color plus a toner, and it finally looks "natural", but I am thrilled
!! It makes my eyes pop!! The perfect blend of caramel, honey and blonde, I've been searchign for it since I decided to forgo my red locks 6 months ago, so I am happy the search has come to an end
no Kool- aid here!! I've been coloring my hair since I am 15, and I tried all, henna, at home kits and more, and I learned a couple of things: just because it's natural it doesn't mean is not going to leave your hair looking like hay, "chemicals" are usually better in this case, and let a professional do his/her job.
everything is chemical ayway
yay i'm happy for u!! it's SOO hard finding that right color.
I think I'm gonna stick with red tones for a bit longer. I started college with red, then went to brown with lots of thick honey blonde highlights, then black (well.. i let my natural hair grow out), and thought.. I'll end college with red.
And everyone seems to love my red hair the most..
I just gotta remember to make an appointment at the salon.
And yea.. I tried those sun-ins before.. very bad for the hair.. and my stylist had a "fun" time clearing that mess up. But I was young, so she forgave me.
My stylist didn't believe that I could pull off a reddish color! He kept talking me out of it EVERY time I went in to have it colored. He would give me amazing blonde highlights or something in that family...and finally one day I said. "I look really good in red." He sighed and said ok and now he LOVES it! He was my new stylist in this area...he didn't know any better!
FB Glad you found your color!
My stylist has been on maternity leave since the beginning of January. The woman I've gone to while she's gone is supposedly doing the same color but I swear it's lighter and brighter. It's not bad and my friends say it doesn't look any different but I think it's darker and richer when Melissa does it. I can't wait for her to come back... two more weeks! It's amazing when you have that "Yes, that is the PERFECT color" moment. And it great when you can come here and tell us about it and we get excited too because, let's face it, chance are your significant other isn't going to understand. Stupid, stupid men.
whatever you do DO NOT use kool aid!! seriously. when i was a kid in sleepaway camp, during color war we used to use kool aid to dye our hair the color of whatever team we were one...it looked cool..but it didn't wash out. so we all went home with wacky color hair, and had to wait for it to grow out. and that took a very very very long time.
it was so awful that i cant even drink kool aid anymore!!!
has anybody used henna? is it safe? does it harm your hair? does it wash out?
PurpleRules.. I'm in the same boat as you. Except she left for maternity leave early around December, and won't be back til July.
Her old assistant uses the same color formula (we mix it to get the right eggplant red), and it's really not the same. It's all about the timing and the temperature imo.
But still... my hair looks crappy so I have to go get it done with the old assistant. She's a sweetheart and she has improved a lot in the past few months.
