How do you like this extensive skincare routine?
  • I watch this girl on regular basis and enjoy the fact that she introduces Asian skincare, which is very developed and interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c4jrLitMC0 this video shows how many steps this girl has in her routine, what do you guys think? does it work?

  • I would be concerned that I was making 'chemical soup' on my face all the time with that many products. Sometimes ingredients in products work great by themselves but should not be combined with certain other ingredients. Example: Retinol products should be used at night and AHA products in the morning under sunblock. Used separately they work much better. Together they can cause problems and will not work as effectively.

She does have lovely skin. I suspect she is not that old. Do you happen to know her age?

Also from the little I did watch she tugs on the skin around her eyes way too much. Over time that will effect her skin in not so lovely ways.
  • she's 28-32. and her skin used to look worse a year ago before she got into all the serums. she was suffering from sun damage, uneven skintone and laugh lines around her mouth. it would be nice to have a discussion about this. this girl states that a lot of asian women (and by that she means Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese...) have even more steps in their skincare routine and look very young in comparison to sun worshipping westerners.
  • I will agree with her totally on the not sun worshipping part. Sunblock is the best 'anti-aging cream' out there. But I would have serious reservations about layering that many products onto my skin. I have to wonder how much of the improvement seen in her skin is due simply to the skin being more hydrated and wearing sunblock.

I am not good at guessing a person's age. Many times I have been asked 'how old do you think I am?' That is awkward. With teenagers I tend to add to the number I think is correct. For some reason teens like to hear that you think they look older than they really are. With everyone else I tend to subtract a bit. Sometimes I just beg off because I realize it doesn't matter what I say, this person will be offended in some way. :-p
  • i always get the age wrong and am always afraid to offend someone. but she actually mentioned her age, so that's why i know. i just forgot what exactly it was :)
  • I guess as long as what she is doing is working for her she should keep it up! (Maybe with a little gentler treatment of the skin in the eye area. In the morning routine she massages the area area over and over. Over time that will not bode well for the skin in the eye area.)

After all, what works for her probably wouldn't work for me. What works for me probably wouldn't work for her. :-)
  • My first thought was: this girl has a lot of money! :-) This isn't very smart, sorry :-)

All you need are basics: cleanser, moisturizer and sunblock, active treatment (aha, retinol) if prefered.

Cosmetic companies would love to have more faithful consumers like she :-)

I have no idea why she wanted to ''advertise'' her excessive routine on youtube.

Why someone would buy and use so many products? 1) Mad about skin and has plenty of time to apply all these products. 2) Do not know what works and what not -believes the more you use, the better you look :-) 3) Has a lot of money to spend on unnecessary stuff 4) Wanna be fashionable (prestige, show to friends...). What else?
  • Perhaps a slight (or not so slight) case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
  • i adore skincare and before a go halfway through my new cream, i already want to buy a new one. though i have a limit of 20$ per cream, so that helps :) i can relate to her, but i also like to read sites like this to keep my obsession in check. showing your routine is not showing off, actually a lot of people begged her to do this video. it's the curiosity
  • It IS interesting to find out what routine others follow. I am always on the lookout for ways to accomplish what I want to accomplish as inexpensively as possible. So far so good. But it does fascinate me to read about, and see in the case of youtube videos, what others do!

I have learned a lot about how to style my wavy/curly hair by watching videos others have posted so they do serve a purpose. I always keep in mind though that what works for them may not work for me!

As to prices, expensive does not always mean better. http://thebeautybrains.com/2008/11/23/youre-not-still-buying-expensive-skin-care-products-are-you/
  • yes, i have learned about the price a long time ago all thanks to the beauty brains :)

and I liked this girl's videos because most of her routine stuff was cheap. she started using Estee Lauder and such just recently, so before i really enjoyed seeing what good creams i could get from Korean or Japanese drugstores
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder :-)))))

    Maybe :-)
  • Her routine is amaaaazing, I thought I was bad. xD
  • Hi, yes naruko is a really cheap organic brand which other companies charge x10 the amount with the same ingredients.

    http://hopeinablog.wordpress.com/2010/12/05/introducing-naruko-skincare/

anyway, all asians have an excessive skincare routine steps. also compared to westerners who worship the sun, asians avoid sunlight at all costs! these layering steps have been part of their skincare culture for years, they called it the 'layering' method - or known as the 'mille feuille' - which in french means thousand layers -
so it isnt as what pukute describes ..

i was using all sorts of really $$$ brands like skinceuticals, estee lauder etc .. and asian brands costs about half the price and same effectivenes..
  • Not all westerners "worship the sun" (I sure don't. I use sunblock 365 days a year!) And I am sure not all Asians 'avoid the sun at all costs'.

My concern with many layers is you might end up having ingredients that counteract each other. One might render the other ineffective. Cancel each other out. Perhaps the Brains can speak to that.

Also, in my own situation, I only try one new product at a time because of the risk of allergic reaction.
  • i should have used the word 'most of' instead of all ! hehe

that is why asians usually buy one skincare set from a brand which compliments one another! for example the brand sulwhasoo has about 7- products starting with the serum -> water -> lotion -> serum --> cream -> sunblock --> foundation etc , and the product compliments one another www.sulwhasoo.com
