Tell us your latest skincare purchase
  • that sounds dirrrty if u get my drift..
    molecular penetration.. hahahahaha
  • jaja, didn't think about that!!

  • I was reading about a gold facial not long ago. I can't find the article but I remember them claiming to have developed a new technology that would make the gold penetrate *giggle* the skin. Maybe this will be the next rediculous claim now that consumers have wised up about what can and cannot penetrate *snort*  the skin.
  • Uh...this does sound a bit too miraculous for $30.  And yup the penetration part is clearly bogus...though it has provided us with some yuks here.
Anne, do let us know your opinion of this  product once you have tried it for a bit.
Today I finally ordered my DHC Olive Oil Cleanser and the Q10 travel kit to see what their other products are like.
  • I have to admit, I didn't read what the company said about the Face Lift product, I went by the reviews on Makeupalley. I just got it yesterday, so will let you know if it works. It does not have a bad smell like some viewers complained about.
  • Yes, definitely get back to us on your results, Anne!
BTW: I got my Teamine Eye Complex off of eBay. It was $15 less than the price at a dermatologist's office or from online beauty stores. Initially, I was hesitant about buying it from an unknown source like that. I wondered if the product might either be expired or not authentic and if there was a way to know. I decided to submit it as a formal question for the BB blog. They suggested asking the manufactorer directly, using the lot number that was on the product. Easy enough! I tried requesting this information from the seller before I made the purchase but my e-mail was ignored. I decided to take the chance anyway.  Once I received it, it certainly looked like the real thing and the jar was sealed. I then e-mailed the manufactorer. They responded in a few days, saying it had left the factory the month before so I was pleased!
I have to say that even if I won't be able to get if off eBay again, a jar lasts a REALLY long time so the list price of $55 doesn't bother me as much. It really has been effective and is my favorite eye cream for diminishing (even eliminating!) fine lines under my eyes and lessening dark circles. You need to give it a full three months of use to lessen dark circles, though.
  • I got a very small jar of Pond's Cold Cream Moisturizer last week and had been using it daily along with my other moisturizers and my face felt wodnerful and then I broke out.  I got all frustrated and pouted for 20 minutes...stopped using it and then started my period yesterday...I should have known.  I'll retry after this horrible week is over
  • Oh, Cate!
Anne: I saw University Medical's "Wrinkle Free" two-product kit that included Face Line Relaxer and Wrinkle Filling Serum at Sam's Club. It was $40. I'm thinking those might be different products than what you ordered but I thought I'd mention it to you.
Like Judy, I'll admit to never having heard of this company or these products before so I'm curious to hear what you think.
  • Clinique Moisture Surge Extra.. I really like the feel of it.  It was I think $34.50 for the jar, but they were having a set that contained the toner spritz and an eye cream for $72.. so I just got the whole set..
    I also bought a Khiel's "Cucumber" "Herbal" Alcohol-Free Toner.. I don't know if I'll keep it though...
  • I was so busy this week that I didn't have time to open my package from DHC until last night.
I ordered...of course...the Deep Cleansing Oil and a Q10 travel kit.  I used the DCO last night and it was as good a promised.  I don't use lots of makeup but I had been finding that when I used my toner I was still finding excess coming off on the puff pad.
I DID have time last evening to look at DHC's catalogue...wow...they have a lot of products!! It was all kind of confusing to me since so many products were meant to be OK for all skin types.  Any one out there have any faves?  There seemed to be a lot of duplication of product within each given category..is it a matter of what kind of FORMULATION you prefer for cleansing, moisturizing, etc.?
  • The great thing about DHC is all the free samples they send you. You'll get a catalog each month that will have 2 or 3 samples in it. The samples are of products that are on sale that month, so if you like a product, you can buy it at sale price. If its something I already have, I save it to use while traveling
  • Yep - I'm just like Anne in taking advantage of those DHC free samples. I love their Cleansing Oil samples when I travel.
  • This skincare buy isn't for me, but for my hubby who for some reason has really dry hands that has started peeling.
See, I actually don't use much lotion aside from the lightest of the lightest body moisturizers, and I don't have hand creams because my hand rarely dry out.  My nails and cuticles get a little dry, but I just put aquaphor/khiel's balm/vaseline on it, but I don't have any hand creams.
I got him the Eucerin PLUS Intensive Repair Hand Creme.  It contains AHA in it to help exfoliate, so I'm hoping it'll work for him.  Even though holdling his rough callused hands make him seem more manly, it doesn't feel that great after a while.  The results would be easy to see on him since he doesn't use anything else, and his hands are just soo awfully dry.  I
  • Hi
I tried to make my husband wear hand cream and failed miserably (I got him into face mositurizers though), I gave up, his hands have so many calluses it feels like a loofa, horrible, keep telling him, but he thinks it's "manly". I wish I could get him to get pedicures as well (sans polish)
  • I am having a terrible time with my face. I'd been using the Principle Secret Reclaim line for about 2 months. The first two weeks, I had some dryness and flaking. That went away, and I was very happy with my complexion for about a month. I think the exfoliator in the line is to strong for my skin, because with continued use, I got two raw spots by the hair line, and my face felt and looked like I had a bad sunburn. I stopped using all the products, and it has gotten better. I think the line would be great for people with regular skin, but I have sensitive skin.

I checked on the Skin Type Solutions forum to see what they had to say. After reading which products worked and which didn't, I ordered what seemed to work for the most people. I ordered La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleaner (which I'll use after taking makeup off with DHC Oil Cleanser) and Atopalm MLE face cream. The face cream is suppose to help heal your skin barrier so it isn't as sensitive. Right now, I think I will keep it plain and simple as far as face care goes...no AHA's, BHA's or retinol.

Do any of you have have an antioxidant/peptide serum you can recommend?
  • I can recommend Paula Begoun's Super Antioxident Serum.  About $22.
  • Thanks Judy! I was looking at that. I'll wait until I try out the new face wash and lotion to make sure I don't have any reactions to them, then add the antioxidant serum.
  • My latest skin care products were from Prescriptives. I paid a fortune for the products. However; for the first time in my life I have foundation that works with my skin. The girl at the counter also sold me "Vibrant C" moisturizer and some "Super Line Preventer" serum stuff. I'm not sure why this all costs around 40-50 dollars a bottle, but my skin does look and feel better. The foundation has covered the redness of my skin color beautifully so I don't regret that purchase.

After finding this site I realize I overpaid for the moisturizer and the serum stuff but it wasn't a complete waste of money. They just added in a lot of "extra" stuff that doesn't really do anything but sounds cool. Loved the line on the back of the moisturizer bottle, "Advanced optics brighten".. Um..what is that? I'm just glad I didn't spend 75 dollars on their exfolliating product or the super moisturizer stuff at almost a hundred dollars. I have free samples of both and they are nice products, I just don't believe in paying that much for it.

So..is there a line of cosmetics that are similar to the Prescriptives but at more reasonable cost?

Oil of Olay products make me itch like crazy (too bad because it's nice stuff) and Mary Kay products cause my face and hands to go bright red and itchy for a couple of days. Ick.
  • After having burned my skin using products that were too harsh for my skin, I bought La Roche-Posay Toleriane Face Wash and ATOPALM MLE Face Cream. I can't believe how quickly they settled my skin down. The redness is totally gone! I can't remember the last time my skin tone was this even. Both of these products are recommended for sensitive skin and those with rosacea.
  • I like ATOPALM MLE Face Cream, also! In the winter, it is very good at calming my skin down before it turns into "angry face" skin. NO burn!!!
  • I just tried Shebas Secrets new Coconut Milk lotion and as far as lotions go it was very nice. It wasn't too oily but lasted a good amount of time. What's best of all is that it's mostly natural!
  • I just bought Garnier Anti-sundamage lotion SPF 28, to replace my La Roche-posay anthelios (I had a coupon, what can I say)
The texture is very pleasant, and I like the smell, whether it works or not, how can I tell? I am a litlle freaked out by their bogus "Nutrition+dermatology" claims, but the ingredients in this lotion seem reasonable and it is very affordable. I wonder if it offers the same degree of UVA protection as anthelios, but it is certainly cheaper and it doesn't make me break out
  • Hey Bethany,
I thought Prescriptives stuff were overpriced too.  And the look on my face told the girl what I was thinking, so she recommended me to Clinique.  It's not as inexpensive as Olay/Neutrogena products, but it has similar/same texture and consistency as Prescriptive products for a bit less.
And both are owned by the same parent company, right? (others, confirm please)
  • Now that I have my beautypedia.com subscription I can look these things up...and yes, TG and Bethany, Prescriptives and Clinique are both owned by Estee Lauder.  Paula Begoun prefers Clinique because most of their products are fragrance free.
  • WOOHOO I was right!
Ohh.. I bought a Deep Cleansing Oil from this Shiseido brand that's only in Asia called Za.  Same idea as DHC, Shu Uemera, Laura Mercier, etc.  Main ingredient is mineral oil rather than olive oil.  It's less emollient than DHC's version, and washes off much easier.  It also smells better, but that's because they added fragrance to it.  The texture and consistency is practically identical to the Shu Uemera version, but it's a lot cheaper.
Unfortunately I haven't tested it's ability to remove long-wear tough hardy make up (waterproof mascara, liquid eyeliner, those type of goodies) so it may suck for all I know.  I haven't been wearing much nowadays aside from the ocassional foundation and blush.  :(  BOOO to working night shifts.
  • T.G.,
I've been bumped back and forth between day and night shifts. I had a very hard time sleeping during the day. I have found some things that helped me sleep, and may help you. Light blocking shades ( or black vis queen), a sleep mask (thick enough to actually block the light) and a white noise machine. I got mine at Radio Shack for about $20. I tried ear plugs, but I always woke up early because they hurt my ears. The white noise really is helpful. Good luck on getting a good days sleep!
  • I am experiencing a bad bout of ITCHY SKIN (body not face) perhaps brought on by either my Neutrogena Age-Shield sunscreen or my Ulta fragranced body lotion. Or Tide detergent perhaps???
Yesterday I bought Eucerin's Dry Skin Therapy Calming Cream with Oatmeal and today I better get the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen.    I don't usually have itchy skin because I am soooo religiously faithful to using moisturizing body wash and loads of after/shower moisturizing lotion.
  • Speaking of itchy skin... I'm in the middle of a series of  6 microdermabrasions. Each session includes microdermabrasion and a quick (in my case, VERY quick) lactic application. You can't use retinoids while you doing it so for the first 3 weeks I used my trusty Nivea cream but it wasn't doing the trick. My face was dry, itchy and red. So I dug around in the drawer where I put stuff I don't use looking for something that would moisterize but not irritate my skin. I found a jar of Origin's Plantidote Mega-Mushroom face cream, which I bought ages ago based on the recommendation of the Beauty Addict  for reasons that I don't remember. I realize that this represents everything we all claim to hate about the Beauty industry (expensive, rediculous claims, "patented technology", yadda yadda yadda) but I gotta say, it's soothing and it moisterizes. I'm sure there's something in the drugstore that would work just as well for a lot less money, but this was already paid for and in my drawer. And it smells like grapefruit. Which is good. If you happen to like grapefruit, that is. Anyway, I don't feel like as much of a a dope for buying the stuff now. I might even test the eye serum since I'm still looking for the perfect eye treatment.
  • I also purchased my last skin care product on the basis of a recommendation from the Beauty Addict. Clean & Clear scrub and in-shower facial, part of the new Soft line. Both are really good products, I used the scrub last night and the in-shower facial this morning and my face is sooooo much softer, I was greatly impressed with the results considering the price (only 6 bucks each!).
  • Boots No7 Soft & Soothed Toner was the last skin care product that I bought. It works wonders and I love it. If anyone here with oily/normal skin wants soft skin without using a moisturizer, get Boots No7 Soft & Soothed Toner. I just got mine at Target for about $8. I love it. I just get a slightly damped cotton pad and put the Toner on it then rub it on my face. For anyone who is unaware, do NOT rinse it off. Let the water and Toner dry into your skin just as if it were a Moisturizer, then put on your make-up or whatever. For people with Dry skin, this product works well too because it is Alcohol Free and won't dry out your face.
  • Boots mango body moisturizer, it smells divine,
  • Anti Inflammatory Cream from Skinactives.com
  • Some ance stuff from Avon. Okay, not great. But then again nothing really works other then Olay's microderm/mini-peel kit followed by a mud mask, preferably one containing sulfer, and a vigorous popping spree.
  • I got the skin care kit (face moisturizer, eye cream and hand cream) from T'Fivve. I'd had such a bad time trying to use anti aging products, the last being Olay Pro-X. My face was red, sore, and had a lot of bumps. Since using T"Fivve products, my skin has gotten much better, and now has an even color. I also ordered their under makeup moisturizer, which is a moisturizer and primer in one. Their products feel very light going on, but do a great job moisturizing. I believe the line is made by the same company that makes Autopalm. I had received a sample of the hand cream with my order of Autopalm, and loved it. The set isn't cheap ($99.00 for 3 products) so I waited to order until the Skin Store had one of their 20% off sales. I like the line so much, I just ordered their travel set.
  • I've been using Amino Genesis for a year. Their line is innovative and not available commercially. Go to their website and read about their products and
how each of them would be relevant to your specific skin care concerns! Obviously, as with all lines, what works for some may not work for others, but I have
been using the treatments appropriate for my needs for a year and my skin has never looked better. The profiles of the C.E.O. and their Chemist are refreshing
because we, usually, don't get a chance to meet the Corporate members of the team!
  • I just bought some more Kinesis sunscreen, unscented. I try other stuff but keep going back to Kinesis because it's so great for sensitive skin. It's a base of cyclomethicone, it's clear and it disappears a few minutes after you put it on. I spray it on all of my skin after every shower. It's like a light dry-oil.
For when I'm in more intense sun, like while biking or camping, I like Aloe-Gator gel, unscented. It feels a little goopy when it goes on, but it drys in a few minutes and stays on a long time. It is also a silicone base, but with more dimethicone so it is more occlusive (keeps skin from drying out.).
My favorite lip color is Cover Girl Outlast LIp Stain. It comes in an applicator that is like a sharpie magic marker. You paint it onto the lips, then add lip gloss or lip balm over it if you want a moister look. It just colors the lips without adding any subtance. My skin is caucasian, medium tone (not very light), with a yellowish-olive tint. These colors look good on me:
420: A natural-looking neutral color a bit darker than my own lips. Not purple or orange, just kind of in the middle.
405: A nice cool pink tint, pretty natural looking too.
410: A great intense hot pink, definitely on the cool/purple side.
It works well as cheek stains too. Just stroke it on and blend it fast before it dries.
