Hi
I have to confess, I think I OD in BHAs+AHAs
starting last night the sking on my cheeks stings everytime I put any cream on
its horrible
I am stickign to cetaphil and gentle moisturizer now
but the pimples on my chin are starting to creep up
heeelp!!
I think I definitely overdid it,
BHA serum, plus AHA toner, and did I mention retinol at night
plus benzoyl peroxide and salycilic acid wash
I need an intervention, but my combination skin is driving me nuts
ughh
I just do 1 treatment at a time. Right now I'm using the 2% BHA gel, so I don't even use salonpas to spot treat new pimples. Aside from that, mild cleansers, mild toners, mild moisturizers, and TONS of sunscreen.
Ever since I had a terrible incident with prescription Retin-A at age 12, I've been super cautious when it comes to strong treatments. And of course, it also means that now, 10 years later, I'm a bit on the fence about putting retinols on my face.
Also, since it's your chin that's getting pimples, and your cheeks that's stingy, why not use a spot treatment just on your chin?
I only use benzoyl peroxide on my chin
which I started back today, because I could feel the pimples coming
I think Iwas going overboard with BHAs and retinol
funny is my skin has never been sensitive or anything
I noticed that now I have rough patches on my cheeks
any good heavy moisturizer for sensitive skin you can recommend?
I think we've all done it. Stick to the gentle stuff until your skin's forgiven you and then gradually add the stronger stuff back in and don't mix them. I've got dry, sensitive skin but I can use a retinol cream at night and a mild AHA serum in the morning (not every morning, 2 or 3 times a week) without problem.
OH YEAH...I think one can definitely OD on all these skin care products especially if you combine them incorrectly or use them in the wrong sequence...except I keep forgetting the sequence.
Actually it is probably a good idea to DE-TOXING from a complicated regimen every once in awhile. Like hair products I think your skin can get over-treated so that your products don't have the same results you had when you first used them...or perhaps you just start reacting differently to them after awhile.
Fitness Brain: Paula Begoun offers very specific advice about how to use the retinols in combination with AHAs at her website. I am giving myself a break from all of those right now, though. The Juice Beauty serum that Cate did a product review on recently is very nice to calm skin down. I really really REALLY like DHC moisturizers. They have quite a few to choose from, depending on your needs. I also love their Deep Cleansing Oil, followed by Cetaphil to wash my face at night. GREAT when used in combination! I only use Cetaphil in the morning, though, since I have no makeup to remove. (Who was it that said they'd like a nicer bottle, though. I agree: It's fugly!!!)
I think you can request product samples from DHC. I get them all the time in my DHC orders, as well as inside their monthly catalog that comes in the mail. That might be a great way to try things but they do have a very liberal return policy if you decide to purchase something but it doesn't work out.
I just learned about skincare a few mere months ago. I haven't ODed yet....and I'm really working hard to not let myself get caught up in it. My skin has been fine for years...it is changing, but I don't want to go crazy.
I got a couple of samples from DHC, they were way too greasy for me
I've been cleansing and moisturizing morning and night since I am 12 I think
somehow I didn't have huge pimples until relatively recently, and just on my chin, I do not know what it is
actually it's been since I've moved to the US, I don't know if it's the diet, maybe the air, stress I really can't explain it
but every time I go home to visit they go away.
pimples are driving me nuts, I totally hate them
I just added my BHA serum in the morning, and my acne products just on the chin
and I am doing fine
I'll wait to add the retinol for a little bit
I think this happened when I added the BHA serum right before the retinol at night, instead of one at night and one in the morning as I was doing
also, now that is cold, the air is very dry
I may need a heavier moisturizer for my cheeks
I usually switch from the lotion to the cream version of DayWear plus in the winter, so I think it's time
Karen, right you are. When my Paula Begoun stuff came this week it included a little booklet that gave instructions on how and when to use what. Whew!
Frankly, I think the skincare industry LOVES having us confused...because then we keep buying new products!
Cate, if your skin is good...don't give in to the MADNESS. Just use SUNSCREEN EVERY DAY! It is the one anti-aging product that actually WORKS...guaranteed.
They base their brand on olive oil, and other olive related goodies. Japanese brand (yes, Japanese people not only design great cars, they also make wonderful skincare and cosmetics =D), so it'll probably be hard for you to find in any store unless you live in LA or perhaps SF. They however, include little packs of samples in their monthly catalogs, and they always have monthly sales.
I love love love their cleansing oil and various soaps (olive, mild, pure). Check out their website and give it a try!
Taiwanesegurl summed up DHC information very nicely!
The DHC Deep Cleansing Oil is a product that confuses people, though. When you use it, you are applying an olive oil product to your skin but it does not make your skin more oily; sometimes I actually have to back off using it for a bit if my skin is a overly dry. Instead, it is extremely effective in removing oils and cosmetics. You pump it into your hands and then apply it to a dry face, rubbing it in, and then you use water to rinse it off. (It turns into a mild white foam when you do.) It gets all your makeup off and removes any impurities in your pores, as well. My complexion is always so much better when I combine it with Cetaphil, always the next step in my cleansing routine.
Judy: I'll send you some sample packs of it if you'd like to try it! Just let me know.
That's interesting... does everyone wash their faces in the morning? I never do. Like I have said a million times in the forum, I have really oily, acne prone skin. I don't wash in the morning, though. I rinse my face, but no soap. It seems that if I do use soap in the morning, my skin gets even oilier (is that a word?). It's like my skin rebounds from the lack of oil and over-compensates. So, unless my skin got really gross overnight somehow, I just do a cool water rinse in the morning. I ALWAYS without fail wash my face in the evening though. I never understood how people could sleep with makeup on. I can't even put my face on a pillow with makeup on, it feels so gross to me. I just think of all the makeup and face oils getting all over my pillow cases. Ick.
Thanks, Karen and Gloria for the info. DHC is not a line I was familiar with. Since I DO live in the Bay Area maybe I will see if I can locate a store that carries it. You are both so knowledegable about these things. I'm such a dull Olay or Neutrogena person!
pas 71, since I shower in the morning I too never wash my face in the morning for fear of drying it out. After my shower I just rinse my face, apply toner and then the REST of it.
I had a college roommate who to THIS DAY goes to bed WITH her makeup on...it still makes me cringe...but her skin is STILL good so there you go.
