This is my first topic and I'm not sure if I followed the right "protocol" or whatever. But I am curious to know if any of you have any kitchen/food-related beauty tips! For example, after I crack open an egg, I will scrape out some of the egg white and dab it under my eyes. My mom said that helps to tighten the skin. I just figure I'd use all I can out of that little egg.
I've read people will actually use Crisco or oleo as intensive hand moisturizers! Sounds icky greasy to me.
And one thing I'm very interested to know are the potential uses of olive oil for beauty. People have already mentioned how they're good for soaking cuticles. What about using it in your hair as a conditioner? Anyone tried it before?
DHC sells extra virgin olive oil as a face moisturizer, so it's definitely great. I've tried adding sugar into olive oil to use as a mask/exfoliator on both my face and body. My skin did feel amazing and moisturized, but since I have oily skin, it was too much for my face and I got a pimple or 2. But it worked wonders for my body.. aaah my skin was so soft!
I've read of people using chilled tea bags to soothe their eyes. I haven't tried that myself.. =P
One person on the forum mentioned using chilled green tea as toner. Can't remember who, but it does sound nice. =D
I too use olive oil and sugar or salt to make a scrub for my hands and then apply a lotion. I generally don't use anything else from my kitchen on my body though
I've heard that chamomile tea bags are supposed to be good for depuffing puffy eyes, but I haven't tried it yet. I have used honey dabbed onto emerging zits overnight to shrink 'em/prevent them from getting bigger, and it works. The only time I've used olive oil, is for hair treatments but it's always been in store-bought products. I do use coconut oil in my hair and love that. Hrrmmmm, I think that's all the "foody"-related beauty tips that I know about it.
There's no question that olive oil is good for your hair. Coconut oil is too. I've never used either in their pure form (too messy) but I do buy an olive oil conditioner and coconut oil conditioner at Sally Beauty Supply. They're in the section for African-American hair. I mix the two together and put it on wet hair. Then I put a bag on my head and and wander around the house for a couple of hours hoping that no one rings the doorbell. I do have to wash my hair afterwards because it's incredibly greasy but it's a great deep conditioner and much cheaper then the Redkin product I was using before.
I also make sugar scrubs when I have the time.
Olive oil makes a good moisterizer. If you sleep alone or if your SO is out of town, you can coat yourself with it (your hair too) and go to bed. It's the fastest way to make your skin as soft as a baby's bottom but you'll have to wash your sheets the next day.
Haha, Purple Rules! We'd do anything for soft skin, eh?
Seirously, thanks for the suggestions so far. I am trying to think of the cleanest way to use up these excess bottles of olive oil in my apartment ( my grandma, god bless her, was a hoarder and after she passed away, we discovered she had 20 bottles of olive oil in her kitchen). It doesn't go bad, right?
I was googling online and found a lot of homemade facial scrubs and masks recipes with good ole sugar, honey (sticky!), oatmeal, salt???, even some mashed banana or avocado. Sounds gross and messy but I think I'll try it out!
Honey scrubs are wonderful. Bath & Body Works had one that I loved but they've discontinued it. I'm trying to reproduce it at home but I haven't had much luck so far.
