Make your own soap or other cosmetics
  • I saw this website and thought others might find it interesting. They list a method for making your own soap. There are lots of other methods on there too. I haven't tried them so I don't know how well they work but I do know the method of soap making seems fairly accurate. Has anyone else tried to make their own cosmetics?
  • I can't imagine it's worth it. The array of products that's readily available at reasonable prices is mind-boggling. What would the motivation be? To save money? To create something that you can't find in a store? It seems unlikely that it's cheaper to make most products yourself and it seems unlikely that you'd be able to develop the perfect whatever-it-is-that-you're-looking for. You'd probably spend a fortune and it would take years to get it right. It might be fun as a hobby or if you had allergies to commonly used ingredients but aside from that, I can't imagine it would be worth the time or the expense.
  • I agree, it sounds fun but maybe just as an arts and craft project. I can buy my multipack Irish Spring soap for $5 and it'll last me months. My idea of "making soap" is to mush together leftover soap sliver; or someone suggested to me to put the pieces into pantyhose and use as a loofah (haven't tried).
  • While it's not worth it in the sense of saving money, it's definitely worth it for the fun factor! If I have a Hello Kitty or some other cute mold, I'd be making them for everyone, filled with tons of glitter!
  • ditto what tai said. I'd do it just for fun or to make handmade gifts for people, not to save $.
