The Order of application for various anti aging topical products
  • Ok so from what I am gathering, the only topical products that really make a difference in anti-aging skin care are 1)variations of Retinoids, 2)AHA's, 3)anti-oxident serums, and 4)sunblock. But what do you put on first? Do you use them all at once? What is the most convenient way to get the benefit of all of these topical solutions?
  • You use Retinols at night. I am not sure if you could use the anti-oxidant serum over that (after waiting the 30 minutes you are usually instructed to wait after applying the retinol before applying any more products). The AHA's you use in the morning. Please make sure you use a broad spectrum (UVA &UVB) sunblock every day. Using the Retinols and the AHA's makes your skin more prone to sunburn.

You don't use Retinols and AHA's together. They effectively cancel each other out if used together if I understand it correctly.

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks Lindygirl... I have been using Nuetrogena with Retinol ...it also has an spf 20 sunblock...then I saw they have the same cream for use at night (without the sunblock)...so are they suggesting using it day AND night? and if AHA are to be used during day, would u use them with a regular moisturizer (something without Retinols)? so cunfusing lol
  • Yeah I don't really understand why they make daytime use with spf with retinol in it. Go figure. I use the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream, Night Formula at night myself. I have been experimenting with some products with a higher dose of retinol than the Neutrogena product has in it lately.

When I use an AHA in the morning I apply sunblock after it, high spf and broad spectrum protection.
  • they make it to make more buck. they don't really care about proper skincare now do they? retinols are to be used only at night. followed with good UVA sunscreen like with mexoryl. lindy, i have heard that BHA and retinols cancel each other out, but nothing about AHA. also, on one thread here people were asking for some proof it actually happens and no one could find a definite study showing that it actually happens, i believe brains were involved in that thread as well.
  • I had read it on a dermatologist's blog.
