Silicones and coconut oil
  • I have heard that silicones in a lot of conditioners seal the hair shaft and prevent moisture from getting in. Does this mean that they will also prevent coconut oil from penetrating the hair shaft? (I have heard that coconut oil does penetrate the hair shaft very well unlike most other oils). Is there any benefit in using coconut oil as a pre wash conditioning treatment or post wash leave in if you also use conditioners with -cones after every wash? I have used coney conditioners for years and I have also used henna for over 20 years. The conditioners with -cones in never seem to make a difference to how well the henna dyes my hair, and I always get a strong vibrant colour that doesn't fade, so obviously the silicones coating my hair shaft don't prevent the henna from penetrating. I rarely wash off the -cones before hennaing my hair, I usually apply it to dirty hair, even when I've used leave in serums full of -cones. The results are always good. I have also heard of build up with silicone products but have never experienced this in all my years of using -cones. I would like to incorporate coconut oil into my routine but I'm worried my efforts will be wasted if the silicones are just blocking the absorption of the oil?
  • Just a forum member and I have no idea if the silicones will coat the hair to the point where the coconut oil will not penetrate the hair shaft. I personally don't use any silicones. If you read labels you know how hard it is to find products without it! I can tell you that coconut oil (I use Extra Virgin Coconut Oil) is great for deep conditioning and as a leave in for frizz fighting. I use EVCO in dry hair weekly as a deep conditioner. Every day I take a pea sized drop of it, melt it in the palms of my hands and run it through soaking wet hair as leave in. It works for me. I don't think you would be disappointed in the results if you try it.

I should probably mention I have wavy/curly hair and I use semi-permanent color at home every 4 weeks.

I hope you find what works for you. And I hope the Brains answer this one. I will be interested to find out if the silicones would block the coconut oil too!
  • Yes you're right, it is so hard to find products without silicones! Its just as well I love silicones so much, they seem to suit my fine straight hair very well. Yes I hope the Brains can enlighten me, but thanks very much for your comment, it was still helpful.
