  • I am wondering exactly when you should apply sunscreen. Should it go on after you wash your skin and should you wear it under or over moisturizer? And what about wearing it under makup and how do you reapply every two hours if you have makup on? Also can anyone recommend a good sunscreen for the face?
  • Hi Vihxen,

We have a long thread that discusses reapplying over makeup. I'll link you to it. http://www.thebeautybrains.com/vanilla/comments.php?DiscussionID=1945&page=1#Item_0 [If you scroll to lindygirl1960's comments, you'll see the discussion about reapplication]. I think the most common way to do it (and probably the best way so as not to mess with either your sunscreen or your makeup) is to apply sunscreen after moisturizer and before makeup. If you can find a moisturizing sunscreen that allows you to skip the extra step, even better. The right sunscreen for your face will depend in part on whether you are oily, dry, combo, normal--and whether you have easily irritated skin. If you are normal to oily and prefer a lighter sunscreen (and want to spend a little extra cash), I like Elta MD UV Clear that I get from Dermstore. It is so non-irritating that I can use it around my eyes. Unlike other zinc-oxide sunscreens I've tried, it dries relatively clear without much of a a white cast. Other people I'm sure have other recs.

  • Thanks so much for the advice!
  • i like to use mineral makeup for everyday. you have to make sure the zinc content is high (around 20%). with the zinc you will get excellent UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection. plus zinc is more stable than chemical sunscreens (its actually a sun "block" not screen as it bounces the rays off your skin) and it won't irritate even sensitive skin. you can use it around your eyes no problem. if you were going to be out in the sun for hours and hours, you would definitely want a heavy sunscreen or sunblock lotion instead.
