Tell Us Your Latest Make-Up Purchase
  • Anyone know Napoleon Perdis or hear of him?
  • I just passed by the store at a local mall the other day and they look like they have good stuff.
  • I was just wasting time in ULTA yesterday looking for cute hair clips when I had the urge to look at make-up.  They were having a sale on Mayeblline buy 2 get one free.  I deided to try their mineral powder, Define-a-lash mascara in Brownish and define-a-line pencil eyeliner in Rich Raisin.  I used them immediately but without any eye primer the eyeliner came off in 2 seconds, but it is a really pretty color.  I like the mineral powder, but I am not sure how it compares to BE.
Oh and I got 3 sets of super cute hair clips...hope I can make them work!
  • Cate: Aren't Left and Right Brain analyzing mineral powders and asking which products the BB community are using? Maybe let them know about the Maybelline mineral powder!
  • This is my last make-up purchase for a VERY long time.  I am not doing so well recently with my new years resolution.
I stopped in at the Benefit counter at Macy*s today and picked up a few things that I think will be perfect for my natural make-up look for work.
    1.  Perk me up powder in Dandelion
    2.  Creaseless cream shadow/liner in r.s.v.p.
    3.  Her Glossiness lip gloss in Next Question Please
    4.  BadGal Blue Mascara just because I have been wanting it for so long
I also got a few freebies today:  a small lip gloss, a loose eye powder in pistachio, and jiggle gel which is suppose to tighten and firm...but what the hey it was free.
Anyway, I got home and tried my look...love love LOVE it!  Although I did use too much eyeliner, but it is a very natural sweet look!  My skin looks clear and fresh...kind of like the girl next door!
  • Nice haul Cate. Is the Dandelion powder as nice as the reviews say? I've read it leaves your face with a nice glow.
  • Anne:  Yes it is fabulous.  Now I have only had it a mere few hours, but I swear this is the look I have been wanting in my make-up routine since.....forever.  I have been searching for a nice natural glowing look and this is the one for me.  I actually was window shopping online today at the Benefit website and they have a few sets of colors for specialized looks and the one I was looking at is called Gal On The Go.  I can substitute colors from my own collection of make-up which had grown dramatically since I became a member here so I just bought what I didn't have for the look.  But I think my favorite part is the lip gloss...stunning.  I'm sold on Benefit!
True Story:  My husband was away this weekend and came home tonight and we we eating some fresh pineapple watching Family Guy and he actually noticed that I had put on make-up (eyeliner and eyeshadow) and commented on the make-up and on how beautiful I was.  He also told me I was just as beautiful without it.  *le sigh*
  • I have been using the Dandelion Powder for quite awhile and it is nice...though I must admit I'm not sure it is ANY different than a blush.
However I like Benefit too and I especially like the little brush that comes with this product.
  • Judy:  It's probably not any different than a blush, and I like the brush too!
  • I like Dandelion AND 10 by Benefit!
  • Its been a bad week and a half. My Dad passed away on March 26th, and was buried on April 1st. He had a great sense of humor, and would have loved that he was buried on April Fools Day. To give myself a lift of spirits, I made an appointment at the Lancome counter for a make over. I went in last night. It was soooo nice to feel pampered. I don't know if I liked my makeup any better once she was done, but it didn't matter. I couldn't leave empty handed after all her work, so I bought two new shadows, an eye liner pencil, and powder foundation that can be used wet or dry. Amy threw in a free gift. A gold make up and brush bag containing a sample mascara, eye makeup remover, a lipstick, a compact with four shadows, and an eye and a face cream. I even like all the colors in the gift set. It was a nice way to lift my spirits.
  • *internet hugs to Anne*
It is nice to just sit down and have someone do your make up as if you are a supermodel or actress.  It just feels good.
I just bought 3 items from Laura Mercier.  They recently came out with same false lashes that are very natural looking, so I got those.  I also bought a new "Lip Glace" in Bellini, and the Eye Colour Pot in Solid Gold.
I didn't love the make over I got done, just because typically the Laura Mercier look is more mature and sophisticated than what I'm used to.  I'm all about being young and funky you know?
  • Anne, I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. I don't care how old you are, losing a parent is always traumatic.
We took the kids to the Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos this weekend. They've got a really cool indoor water park that both kids (both of them!) loved. They also have an Aveda Spa so I got a manicure while I was there. I don't get my nails done very often so it was a real treat. And I bought some nail polish too. Of course.
  • Thank you for the kind thoughts. Even though he had been sick for a long time, it hit harder than I thought it would. So thanks again for your kind words. Its funny, I haven't been on this site long, but I feel like I've made several new friends and your condolences mean a lot to me.
  • I just bought Smashbox Backdrop Cooling Tint Foundation and am so in love with it! It is a step up from tinted moisturizer, but it far lighter coverage than the common liquid. Perfect coverage if you have nice skin, and it gives a blast of cool zing to your pores.
  • Thanks, Paris! I've never heard anyone talk about it before.
  • I got UD'S eye base, but had a bit of redness when I took it off. I don't know if it is from the base, the new eye cream, or just allergies. I haven't used it since, but still have the redness, so I may try it again tomorrow.

I also got Shiseido's mascara base and love it. It really holds the curl. After curling my lashes, they would only hold the curl for about an hour. With this, the curl lasts all day. Love it!

Paris..I'll have to check on the tint foundation. Tomorrow is Lets Do Lunch at Smashbox. Free shipping, and free product with any order :) Got to love that!
  • I'm also sorry to hear of the death of your dad, Anne.  I hope you are doing well.
I went to BeneFit with a friend on Sunday and got their Brow Zinger or something like that since I have very light and sparse eyebrows.  THUMBS UP on the product itself but thumbs WAY DOWN on the compact it comes in...you need lots of dexterity and upper body strength to get the blasted thing open.  The TEENY applicator brushes are also a bit too TEENY for me so I will have to get another one which of course will not fit in the compact.
While there I also replenished my Playstick concealer which I have used successfully for several years now.

  • OOOH, Anne, that mascara base sounds great. I would love something to keep my lashes nice and curled. I find myself pushing them back with my fingers throughout the day to try and get the curl back! I'm really into eye makeup.
Speaking of which, that may be why the Pond's Cold Cream doesn't work to take off my  makeup. I think I might wear too much mascara for that stuff to handle. Judy, have you gotten your DHC oil yet?? You're going to love it! It just melts my makeup off in seconds. So great.
  • pas71: I'm so glad you love the DHC cleansing oil! They say it does not cause acne for acne-prone skin and even advertise that it lessens it. Let us know what you think on that one.
Anne: I had a terrible experience with UD eye makeup base. It caused my eye lids to become all red and took the top layer of skin off in places! I'm wondering if it's not so great for more mature skin.
  • Paula Dorf's 2+1 for Brows is similar to the BeneFit Brow Zinger. It's got a clear wax and 2 different powders that you can mix to create the perfect color. The combination of wax and powder is easy to apply once you get the hang of it. It's a little more difficult then using a pencil but it looks more natural and it lasts all day.
Judy, try using a stiff, angled brush (similar to what you'd use to apply gel eyeliner) instead of the nasty little brush that comes with the Brow Zinger. It's easier to work with and it'll give you more control. It's well worth the money to buy a brush just for your brows.
  • Yes! I LOVE the DHC cleansing oil and thank you to everyone who recommended it! I would have never found it on my own. As far as the acne prone issue... I've been using the DHC for a week and a half now and so far, so good. However, there would be no way for me to determine how it's doing for acne issues right now because I have had so many changes lately. I completely stopped using all acne treamtent products for 2 weeks, then started on a trial acne drug (or placebo, my money is on placebo), and then started using the DHC oil to get my makeup off because the Cetaphil can't do it on its own. Last week my skin was a complete mess, but this week I am suprisingly clear (though I've always had ups and downs and the clearness is not completely out of the ordinary). According to the derm, my skin has not actually improved. *sigh* When I go in on thurs, it will definitely be an improvement, but I don't think it's due to the trial "drug." I think it's just my normal swings between good and bad skin.
On another note, however, I think I finally found the cause for most of my breakouts: squeezing blackheads. I get lots of blackheads, which I think are exacerbated by my fondess of self-tanner, which darkens the tips of the clogged pores and makes them noticeable (at least to me). I finally figured out that I'm getting large, deep blemishes where I squeezed out a blackhead the week before. I guess I'm pushing stuff deep into my pore and making a mess of something small. Unfortunately, it's SO hard not to squeeze them out! Especially since they seem to slide right out without a lot of pressure. I MUST stop that. I think the answer will be more dilligent exfoliation... but then I rub off my "tan!"
  • Good news! It wasn't the UD Primer that irritated my eyes. It's my yearly allergies. I don't know what causes it, but for about 6 weeks every spring my eyes will be irritated, swollen and raw. I hate it. Hydrocortisone cream helps a little, but I'm sure glad when its over with.
  • Got a Sonia Kaschuk (sp) brow brush yestereday at Target.  I think it will make things easier though I have surprised myself with being able to get results from the dopey brushes that came with the set.
AND as I said on the skin care thread...LOVE...LOVE...LOVE the DHC Deep Oil Cleanser.  This morning my forehead felt so much smoother than normal!
  • DHC Deep Cleansing Oil forever!!!
I actually came across a website on how to make your own cleansing oil at home and adjust the recipe, depending on your skin type. I might try it this summer; not sure.
  • I got some samples of the "famous" oil, how do you use it? can you remove eye make-up with it
I have to admit it scares me a litlle bit, I have a huge pimple on my cheek, and it is just before "that time of the month" will it mak me brake-out?
  • Just squeeze about a teaspoon onto dry your palm, rub it a little bit (that's what i do), and rub it all over your dry face, including your eyes.  It removes EVERYTHING, including waterproof mascara.
And it won't break you out.  It washes off easily with water, and you can still use your normal facial wash afterwards.
  • The miracle part of this DHC stuff is that putting OLIVE OIL on your face sounds soooo counter-intuitive.  Why would I want to put OIL on my face when that is usually WHY I am washing my face?  Dunno...but it produces really good results.  It sort of does smell like olive oil rather than something more fragranc-ed but nothing you can't put up with.
  • Ditto to what taiwanesegurl and Judy are telling you!  (SMART Brainiacs, for sure!  )
Also, most of the information concerning the use of cleansing oils will tell you that it will not cause breakouts because oil dissolves oil and oil alone doesn't  cause acne. It's hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells, crooked pores and the buildup of these factors together that cause problems. As one article I read on the subject said, "Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. It is not a malicious force to be reckoned with; it is there for the benefit of your skin. Not only does it help lubricate, it also heals, protects, and moisturizes you skin so it may function properly. Properly functioning skin is beautiful, clear, and glowing." I've also read that stripping away too much oil only causes your skin to produce more and more oil as a rebound effect which can lead to clogged pores....and then acne.
When using the DHC product, just remember NOT to wet your face first. Apply it to dry skin and massage it in; then rinse with water. At that point, it will change to a white and slightly foamy consistency.
  • good to know Karen
I was going to splash my face with water right before!! will give it a try tonight
  • Sure! Please let us all know what you think and if you, too, become a devoted fan...or not!
  • ugggg, didn't like it, it smells like cooking oil!!
I did like however one of the other samples, some kind of primer I think, that was awesome
I think I am going to stick to my new bliss cleansing milk, it smells nicer!! and so far has brightened my skin quite a bit
  • FB:  Oh PLEEEASE give the DHC another chance...I don't notice the smell like I did the first time with the sample...is the DHC primer the Velvet Skin stuff...I tried it from the sample and found it waxy but I have some other samples now so maybe I'll like it better the second time.
  • yes it is the velvet skin
maybe some of the samples are a litlle bit old, and that's why the oil smells and the primer is waxy?
  • oh hmm.. weird.. but very possible
or it was just too hot where it was stored??
some of my products that i didn't rescue (put in the fridge) before the heat wave came smells a bit off..... and yes, it was over 90 degrees here, and my stupid apartment was an oven..
  • Again, on the Velvet Skin...not supposed to be waxy?
  • Judy: I bought a tube a while ago because it's such a popular DHC product. I found it to be very waxy, too. I don't use it anymore. It clogs my pores and I really didn't notice a difference when I used it.
  • Thanks, Karen, for letting me know on this...when i caught myself in the mirror the other day I thought...uh...perhaps I need a wrinkle filler or something like that and was considering the Velvet Skin...thanks for the warning.
  • I bought one of the new Chanel Glossimers and one of the new nail polishes. I also got both of the new Lippman polishes. They're so bright and springy! I don't have a lot of really bright  NP colors and, for some reason, I'm really in the mood for bright pinks and corals this spring.
  • Have any of you tried the Baked Collection from Physicians Formula? I hadn't tried any of their products until a week ago. I bought a shadow trio, powder, and bronzer. I liked them so much, I went back and bought two more shadow trios. I also got two of their eye brighteners, Hint of Taupaz and Hint of Berries. You can use them wet or dry. I put them on dry. They go on very smooth and blend well. The best thing about them is the price, especially when you get them on sale at Rite Aid or Bartell. Don't you just love playing with new colors?!!
  • I finally bought the Laura Geller Lip Spackle. It has mixed reviews on MUA but I tested it a week ago and I liked it so I thought I'd give it a shot since I'm wearing brighter lipsticks these days. I also got two more red lipsticks since red lipstick is the only trend I really like this spring. I've played around with them a bit and while it's true that it's more work to keep it looking good throughout the day, it's not that difficult if you're already in the habit of touching up you lipstick (or gloss) during the day. And anyone who says red lipstick is only for evenings can drop dead.
Elke Von Freudenberg, whose blog is currently in a readable state, has excellent instructions for applying red lipstick. I already had a LM blonde eyebrow pencil so I tried it out and a light, light brown pencil really does work perfectly with red lipstick. Who knew?
Has anyone tried Carnindy's new line with Sally Hansen? The primer is supposed to be good.
I also got some lime green nailpolish. I have a lime green trench coat that I wear all the time so I think it will look nice. I'm going to try a sparkly royal blue on my hands and the lime green on my toes. Then I'll wear my red lipstick and my lime green coat and I'll be ready to go hunting! I won't even need to add any safety orange.
  • My make up buying has been so boring lately.  My routine has been so boring too.  I got transferred to night shift* recently, and there's just no spark in putting make up on at night.  I wear concealer and mascara at most.  Sometimes gloss, but not really.
    So what have I bought?
A new concealer from Neutrogena (the green color correcting blemish concealer with salicylic acid) and Cover Girl's Long Lasting lip shine.  It was BOGO Free at CVS, so I picked up a nude color (which looks really natural), and a mauve color that I haven't tried yet.
And Elke Von Freudenberg's website - subscribe to it via RSS feed, and use Google Reader.  The only way I can enjoy her website.
  • I just returned from Whistler, BC where the 2010 winter Olympics will be held. Had a great time, and hit the duty free shop on the way back into the US. I was going to pick up some more Shiseido Lash Primer, but they were out. One of the clerks said she used the Shiseido Primer and the Estee Lauder Primer, and liked the Lauder primer more. I got it to try it out. I will have to let you know how I like it.

    P.S.
I love Whistler! Great place to go to totally chill out :)
  • Judy,

I don't ski either. It is still a great place to get away. The village is absolutely gorgeous! They have put a lot of work in the landscaping. When you stay in the village, you park your car on arrival, and don't get back in it until its time to leave. Lots of shops and nice restaurants. If you ever have the opportunity to go there, grab it!

If your travels ever bring you to the Seattle area, give me a shout.
  • taiwanesegurl I am curious
how did you find the neutrogena concealer, I am always on the look for good blemish coverage

  • Here's the link from drugstore.com - Neutrogena SkinClearing Concealer
It works pretty good.  It IS green though, so you really have to blend the edges well or else it's like, "hey, you have some green stuff on your face.  OOOH nevermind, you are trying to conceal a pimple!"
BUT, it does help in reducing the size of the pimple.  I tried this 1 night, then the next night I used a regular concealer from Laura Mercier.  When I use this, my pimple reduced a little bit in size.  But when I used the regular concealer, my pimple got angrier.
  • I used the Neutrogena Concealer Stick Corrector Yellow and didn't like it at all.  It didn't blend well and really didn't help the redness of my skin.  I ended up with Benefit's You're Bluffing which is better but on an actual BLEMISH  it still doesn't blend well...better for a larger areas that are not raised.
  • Recently my pimples have been appearing on my forehead, which is not too awful for me since I'm sporting heavy thick bangs lately.  Since my move to graveyard shift, I've actually stopped wearing make up to work.  I sometimes make an effort (foundation, concealer, MAC paint pot, mascara, gloss), but most of the time it's just a blank canvas.
My morning shift coworkers are always surprised to see me now, because when I worked the morning shift, I would always have nice make up on.  It's a total 360 for them.
Surprisingly most of them just say I look tired (which I am most of the time now), and only my old supervisor will say that I don't look as pretty.  But she doesn't really know how t osay things at times, so whatevs.
  • Oh the tragedy.  I actually left my entire bag of make-up at my parents house a few weeks back and we are talking about everything in it including my tweezers.  So I went out and just got a few staples eyeshadow quad, mascara and a liner.  Fortunately I have a ton of BE foundation and a million glosses, but there is one in my bag that I haven't even used yet *le sigh*
My mother is supposed to be shipping it to me.  I really need it before the end of the month...Bachelorette Party!
  • After trying both the Shiseido Lash Primer and the Estee Lauder Lash Primer, I much prefer Shiseido's. It holds the curl much better.

I got Sephora gift certificates from my hubby and daughter for Mother's Day. I restocked on my Fekkai Glossing Cream, and bought a Vincent Longo lip and cheek stain. I haven't used it on my checks, but I do like using it under lip gloss. That way I still have some lip color when the gloss wears off. I also bought a new concealer from Amazing Cosmetics. I'd never heard of the company before, but when I asked the clerk what their best concealer was, she immediately recommended it. It's $40.00 for .5 oz , which I found out after she rang it up. I would have told her no way if I had not tried it on. I used a very small amount, but it was way too much. I had to wipe it all off so a very small amount could be applied. It covers great!

Hope all of you had a great Mother's Day!
