What do you think about mineral makeup?
  • I was just being interviewed by a writer doing a piece for WebMD and she was asking me questions about mineral makeup.  I'm curious what your beliefs about mineral makeup are.  For example...

How is mineral makeup different than non-mineral makeup?
What is the benefit of mineral makeup versus standard makeup?
Do you think mineral makeup is more natural?

I'm curious to see how effective the marketing groups have been.
  • I use it because it's less occlusive than liquid makeup, and does not contain irritants (like chemical sunscreens) that aggravate my rosacea.  But the same could be said for any powder makeup.
  • I use powder mineral makeup but mostly just because it IS powder and on my oily skin that works better. A definite plus is that it doesn't break my skin out. That being said it doesn't work for me at all unless I use a primer under it. Go figure.

  • Oh and another reason.... it is powder and therefore does not have to fit into the 3-1-1 bag for travel!  B-)
  • The latter is a good enough reason for me, Lindygirl!
  • Well...I use mineral make up, because it is actually the only make-up that doesn't contain ingredients that I am allergic to. I use Youngblood Natural Mineral Foundation (powder) and Mineralissima foundation. I am satisfied with the foundations of these two brands. It feels good on my skin, it looks good and it does not irritate my skin. But to be honest, I am not really a fan of for example the mineral mascara that Mineralissima offers. I use it, simply, because I haven't found any mascara that I am not allergic to. But if I didn't have any allergies I would go for all the 'normal' make- up. I don't use it simply because it claims to better for the environment or that it would be non-toxic.Those claims do not sound very valid to me.
So yes, I am very happy with mineral make-up, because it makes it possible for me to wear make-up (I could not live without...) without getting scary allergic reactions.
  • I admit, I started using mineral powder makeup because I saw a commercial of the "pioneer" brand on tv and thought it was a miracle. I totally bought into the "safety" aspect, and the "amazing coverage" messages. That was about 5 years ago. So at that time, I thought....
How is mineral makeup different than non-mineral makeup?
It's safer and better for your skin!
What is the benefit of mineral makeup versus standard makeup?
    Way better coverage.
Do you think mineral makeup is more natural?
Yes. They only use natural ingredients.

And I've used powder makeup ever since. Now that I am Beauty Brains
savvy, I don't care whether it has minerals or not. I just like the
    coverage I get. So now....
How is mineral makeup different than non-mineral makeup? It might have some mineral ingredients added to be able to claim that it's "mineral makeup."
What is the benefit of mineral makeup versus standard makeup?
Possibly less irritating to some types of skin, but no effect for me.
Do you think mineral makeup is more natural?
    No.

I think I can get the same coverage with regular powder makeup, but honestly I haven't really tried. Almost every brand now makes some kind of mineral claim on their powder makeups that I haven't noticed any powders without it! So that's why I continue to use it.
  • I think the brains have pointed out that all powder makeups have always contained minerals, given that talc is a mineral.  Unless I have that wrong.  I spend so much time on this blog that I kid myself I've gone to brain university, lol...
  • @ Sarah - same here, from what I understand talc is a mineral. Which is why I find it odd that some mineral makeups tout 'no talc' like that makes it better somehow. If talc is a mineral then how is 'no talc' a better mineral makeup?

Like my grandma used to say don't believe everything you read and only half of what you see.
    :-)
  • @ Lindygirl19670: The "mineral makeup" revolution I think had more to do with products that are now touting themselves as only mineral based, being free of parabens and skin irritants commonly used cosmetic ingredients. Talc has been a common powder cosmetic ingredient for ages, but just because a cosmetic includes talc doesn't make it "mineral" as most consumers have come to know the marketing term. I think most consumers would agree with me in that they have come to know "mineral" as meaning a product containing natural, hypo-allergenic ingredients, as opposed to old-fashioned powders that may still contain skin-irritating synthetic ingredients. Containing talc does not exclude the fact that a product may still include non-mineral ingredients!

Also, many companies have gone "talc-free" because talc products tend to be heavier and can sometimes give a ghost-like effect as talc is white.
  • Synthetic does not equal skin-irritating.  In fact, my personal bias is the opposite.  As someone with sensitive skin, I'm wary of products with lots of natural essential oils because so often, they are irritants for me.  But certainly, I see no reason why natural should be less irritating.  What would be the scientific basis for that?

I'd also like to see a mineral product that doesn't contain any "non-mineral" ingredients.
  • I use mineral make up by Lily Lolo. I think the price is reasonable and was impressed by reviews. Liquid foundation was making my skin dry and I never really got the same finish each time and thats in any texture very runny, thick or mousse (the mousse was a disaster and the blush too!).

The powder oddly stays all day and it also gives a more natural finish. They had just the perfect shades of eyeshadow that i'd been looking for and it just so happened that it stays all day.

Marketing mind games was definatly part of the reason I decided to try some though, cute name, pretty website, pretty product descriptions haha but hey the products work. It wasnt about it being mineral it was just they had such good reviews and I was sick of horrible cakey skin.
  • The only benefit with mineral makeup I find is my forehead tends to be less shiny. I use liquid mineral makeup then put powder over that. Otherwise, it's just the same, if in some cases not worse, than non-mineral.

In the end, I think it's a lot of hype. If it wasn't for the fact that an hour after washing my forehead is shiny enough to signal airplanes at night I wouldn't bother with mineral makeup at all.

  • I'm a big fan of mineral makeup, love it.. the coverage is flawless and really is better for your skin.. no chemicals and is suitable for sensitive skin.  Recently, I found another mineral makeup company called; Just Pure Minerals.com  finally.. I've found the perfect foundation that really...does conceal the redness :)
