using baking soda in african american hair
  • Hey Everyone,

I'm making my own conditioner and wanted to use baking soda in it to increase the pH of it. I don't think that much would need to be used in the conditioner. So my question is about the regular use of baking soda in hair. I condition my hair once to twice a week. I have very soft hair but dry hair. I do not use relaxers in my hair. There is no curl to my hair and it is considered to be straight for natural hair. Although, it is no were close to being as straight as relaxed hair. I was just wondering is there anyone who uses baking soda in the conditioner and shampoo on a regular basis? If so, far how long have you done this and how often? Did it dry your hair out? Did you use the baking soda in the conditioner or shampoo or both? When you respond will please tell me what type of hair you have so I can compare. Thanks everyone.

  • Not a Brain, just a forum member. I do use baking soda once a month. I mix it with shampoo in the palm of my hand when I am preparing to use it. I use this mixture to shampoo my hair and remove any and all buildup there might possibly be to prep my hair the night before I plan to do semi-permanent hair coloring the next morning. I do find it to be very drying. I always make sure to put extra no silicone conditioner into my hair after I do it. Otherwise it would be impossible to comb through the wet hair in the shower to get all the tangles out.

To clarify on a weekly basis I find that mixing lemon juice with my no silicone conditioner works really well and, oddly enough, is not nearly as drying as the baking soda route.

I am not sure my limited experience with the baking soda will be of any use to you because my goal is clarifying and your goal is actually making a conditioner. Thought I would throw it out there anyway.
