What are your personal hygiene tips you wish everyone knew?
  • I saw this interesting discussion thread about personal hygiene tips and thought it would make a good discussion here.  I'm not certain we would recommend not rinsing after brushing your teeth (too much residual SLS) but there are some interesting suggestions.

    What are yours?
  • 1) In the shower, I use Nizoral shampoo on a foot brush to clean my fungus-prone feet, especially toes and toenails.  It's off label, but it's antifungal, and can't hurt

    2) I try to keep a clean and dirty stick of deodorant.  That way, if I have to use deodorant on a day I haven't showered, I don't get nasty bacteria on the clean stick.  If I don't have a "dirty" stick handy, I just take a tissue and clean the stick with rubbing alcohol after using the stick on dirty armpits (just like they do at the beauty counter)

    3) Also--maybe this is just superstition, but I wash my hands after touching my feet or anywhere I think might harbor fungus/germs (like the dog--yes, I know that sounds wrong in context) before interacting in any way with my genital area.

btw, I've never rinsed after brushing--but I do spit well, and kind of do a once over with the toothbrush after washing it off (I use my clean toothbrush to brush my tongue, so I have to rinse it off anyway)

  • Anyone else going to join me here?  I kind of put myself out there:)
  • Alright I'll add...

I can make contacts last a long time (2 months) if I make sure to wash them before putting them away for the night.  If I don't wash them they last maybe 2 weeks.

A moisturizing shampoo works perfectly fine as a body wash.
  • I'd say "Take a bath and brush your teeth every single day!" - I know too many people who think it's okay to skip bathing for as much as 3 days in a row and don't brush their teeth even once a day. *shudders*
  • sarahf, I like that deodorant tip. Deodorant sticks always harbor so much bacteria I'd imagine so I'm going to try it. :) Thanks!
  • @ Jami - amen to that!

Can we add please use a deodorant or antiperspirant? Daily. After the shower and brushing your teeth.
  • Yeah, in addition to my concerns about dirtying my clean deodorant stick, I get physically uncomfortable by the end of the 2nd day if I don't get my shower first thing in the morning.  I get itchy (feet especially) and my armpits start to chafe (I'm guessing from those bacteria I mentioned).  So I've rarely gone a whole day without a shower.  I think people who do it must not sweat a lot or produce a lot of oil--or, if their bodies do these things, they are not very aware of living in a human body.
  • Oh yeah, left brain, your moisturizing shampoo comment reminded me--I use a moisturizing (cream) body wash as a shaving cream.
  • You can also use cheap conditioner as a shaving cream. (Less razor burn even on sensitive skin.)
  • Just be careful when using conditioner for shaving. The conditioning ingredients (typically quaternium ammonium salts) can be irritating to skin. Glad it works for you, but this tip may not be for everyone.
  • I use a shower hose when bathing my genital area, I put the spray of hard stream and direct the water you get clean and sometime a treat too :)
  • lol!  You can also hang out too long right by the jets at the hottub or pool...
  • @ Right Brain - I only use conditioners that I have successfully used in my hair. It had not occurred to me there would be a difference in putting the conditioner on your skin and using it in place of a shave gel and in putting it on your scalp. In both cases the conditioner gets rinsed away. Would it cause irritation simply because it was left on the skin longer if used to replace shave gel?
  • I wonder if right brain might mean that it could irritate the tiny scrapes we get from shaving?  As opposed to intact skin that isn't roughed up.
  • Take good care of your feet! Since its very hot out here in California I keep seeing people with the nastiest feet in the tiniest sandals. Thick, scaly, cracked heels, overgrown toe nails, etc. EW!
  • @Sarah - my 6th grade teacher was one of those "only bathe every 3 days" types and thought antiperspirant & mouthwash were killing the environment. (She used to give lectures about how Listerine was poisoning our ground water supply. This is back when it only came in the amber color with the medicine taste. Man, I'd love the BBs to do a blog about that urban myth!) She claimed "The human body's natural oder is beautiful" and treated me like the spawn of Satan because I bathed daily, used Listerine (my trick back then was to use it BEFORE brushing my teeth - still got the germ killing but had the minty taste of toothpaste afterwards), and used antiperspirant & perfume!

My 15 year old niece and 12 year old nephew often skip bathing and brushing their teeth. Their mom hates it and gets on them about it. Sadly, my idiot brother and his new wife are the ones who passed this habit onto them. They're on drugs, however. You'd think that would influence the kids the other way to be extra clean instead of stinky like their drug addicted father.

    1) I am bothered by really sweaty feet, and I use strong antiperspirants overnight, like prescription Drysol or OTC Certain-Dri. It makes my feet bone dry. 2) I started using the Venus razors with 5 blades, and they have lubricating strips on them. I don't need to use shaving gel, and I don't nick myself either. 3) I keep in my car an emery board and a tool for cleaning under my nails, and at stoplights (when I am by myself) I check my nails and fix them if necessary. 4) I used to dislike flossing with standard floss, and skipped it sometimes. I started using  plastic "flossers"  and it is much easier and faster, and I rarely skip. 5) I hate it when I wash my face and i'm wearing long sleeves, and the cuffs get wet. I use the terry cloth sweatbands for wrists that tennis players use, and they keep my cuffs dry.

Something I wish other people knew: men, if you have nose hair or ear hair, please trim it. Another: please do not let your toenails grow long, it looks gross and dangerous.

  • Read a really smart tip in cosmo, which I already in some extend practised, but didn't really realize how effective it was. I usually end up with mascara under the eye. Put some facial creme (or, really any lotion will do) under the eye, and swipe away with a cotton stick. Lotion is made to be on the skin, so imagine it doesn't matter if you don't swipe away everything. Lotion+ a little water also works as a make up-remover if you, as I usually do, have forgotten to pack one when you go on vacation. Of course, if you have sensitive skin it mightn't be good for your skin. But for me, it works quite well.
  • @bluecatbaby--I agree about long toenails.  Personally, I'm not a big fan of long fingernails either.  But mine grow so fast it's hard to keep up sometimes.  I'm glad you keep yours nice!  I saw a guy recently who had longer fingernails and they were kind of yellow.  They weren't black underneath or anything, but the length kind of looked like a breeding ground for yuckiness and combined with the yellow tone, made his hands as a whole seem dirty.
  • @ Sarah - I have seen people with nails like that. ewww...

I am probably just super picky but that is something I do take note of about people I meet. If their nails are nice, neat and clean then I know that person pays attention to details.
  • I have a secret technique for removing makeup when I'm super tired:

I massage some coconut oil on my face and do round scrubbing motions with the tip of my fingers,
then I wash it off with plain Dove bar soap and lots of water.. surprisingly it's actually less irritating to me than to use lots of wipes, because the large amount of oil stops the soap from drying my skin and there is less mechanical friction. It's actually very comfortable afterwards. So much that I'm considering switching to this method once I finish my normal cleanser, because it's so comfortable and so efficient at removing makeup (which means it would probably be good to clean off dirt when I haven't worn makeup).

  • @ sassafras - if you want to do this on a regular basis you might want to consider using a different oil to remove the makeup. Coconut oil is very occlusive and may cause breakouts over a longer time frame.

I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) and it doesn't break my skin out (oily, sensitive skin, prone to breakouts). Actually I use only EVOO to clean my face. I remove most of the oil with a tissue and then use a clean wash cloth wrung out in hot water to gently remove the rest of the residue.

You could also explore Sweet Almond Oil. I understand it is good for oil cleansing.
    :-)
  • Ooohh, thank you, I will try!
