hair porosity
  • How can I tell the porosity of my hair? and If I have high porosity why would humectants be bad for it?
  • It doesn't make sense to me that humectants would be bad for porous hair.  I think of very porous hair as kind of more fragile than less porous hair, but I don't know exactly the definition of it (I picture hair with little "pores" or tiny holes in it, like the outside of each strand might resemble swiss cheese).  So it seems to me as though humectants would be good, to protect the hair from damage.  My lay person impression is that very porous hair will soak up water and take longer to dry than less porous hair.  But water and humectants are kind of two different things.

  • I saw a really good illustration of what the hair shaft should look like in The Curly Girl Handbook (the updated - second - version of the book). The hair shaft should look like a closed pine cone. The surface is smooth. The cuticle lays flat. In damaged hair the cuticle is raised, like an open pine cone. It doesn't lay flat and the surface is not smooth.

If your hair has 'high porosity' it means that the cuticle is raised or like the open pine cone.  Curly hair is naturally more porous. Or that is my understanding from what I read about it.

Here is a link to an article I found that deals with the subject.

    Hope it helps!
