Does anyone know where I can get.... (not a beauty question)
  • Some inexpensive dyable tennies/sneakers? Ones that hold dye better then those white canvas shoes you can get at places like K-Mart.

I'm already planning my Halloween costume and the two things I need is a pair of sneakers I can dye blue - in hopes they'll match the shirt I'm wearing - and a plain white shirt for Minnie. (Well, actually I need more than that. I also need to get a white cup and some blue felt and a few other things to make what will go on top of my head, but that would be easy.) See, I decided I'm going to be the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) and Minnie is going to be The Doctor. No one makes any good Doctor Who costumes for dogs, but someone gave me a black cloak that reminds me a bit of what Doctor #3 wore so I just need the white shirt. I've got a sonic screwdriver. I'm going to tell people "The Doctor's last regeneration didn't go as planned. Not only did he become a canine, he became a she."

I've got a t-shirt that has the facade of the TARDIS on it and a blue wig. I'm going to use the cup and felt to make the light to go on top of my head - if I can I'll put a battery operated light inside it. But I just can't find a pair of tennies that will take dye and not have it rub off on my socks. Only dyables I find are those dress shoes. I just want something I can toss in a bucket with some RIT and dye myself.

Yes, I love Halloween so much I start planning my costumes long before October.
  • Really good Halloween costumes take planning Jami!! No ideas here on the dyeable sneakers though. Sorry.
  • Hi Jami,

I can't find anything either.  What you could do, though, is contact dharma trading company [Tel: (800) 542-5227 Toll-free from anywhere in the USA & Canada]. I've ordered dyeable items and fabric paints from them before.  They don't seem to carry sneakers, but they might know who does or be able to tell you how to remove the coating from the sneakers that causes them not to take dye.  Any fabric needs to be pre-washed before dyeing, but if the coating won't come off in the wash, then it will prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric.

  • I've bought from Dharma before. I checked for shoes but I didn't think about contacting them.
  • Jami I know this is a dumb question but did you look online to see if, just maybe, someone out there made a pair of sneakers in the shade of blue you are seeking? Stranger things have happened!  :)
  • Too expensive. Especially since I'm a 6 1/2 double wide.
  • Sounds like the same thing that happens to me when I go looking for dress shoes. Narrows are tough to find and are generally expensive.

I don't like shopping for shoes.
