Trying to help someone to stop wasting their money

edited February 2014 in Ask the Beauty Brains

Hi Beauty Brains :) I have been trying to help my sister to stop falling for  marketing hype with products and she just seems to always fall in to the trap, (which we all have at one point or another). She read that this eye cream product is one of the best to use for fine lines etc, but from what I read of the ingredients its a waste of money, but I could be wrong. Can you look and see what you think, and if she should spend her money on this? Its not expensive but if it isn't worth buying why bother? Just would like to help her so she stops spending money on stuff that will not work!

Aqua (water, eau), caprylic/capric triglyceride, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, parfum (fragrance), propanediol, salvia sclarea (clary) extract, lactobacillus, polymnia sonchifolia root juice, persea gratissima (avocado) oil, glycine soja (soybean) oil, trichilia emetica seed butter, aloe barbadensis leaf powder, alpha-glucan oligosaccharide, cera alba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), tocopherol, astrocaryum tucuma seed butter, maltodextrin, citrus aurantium amara (bitter orange) peel, stearic acid, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, potassium stearate, sodium PCA, sodium benzoate, xanthan gum, phenoxyethanol, lecithin, potassium sorbate, linalool, eugenol, amyl cinnamal, hydroxycitronellal.

  • This is Burts Bees Intense Hydration Eye Cream. I have no doubt that it does exactly what it claims to do:

    Intensely hydrates dry skin
Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Of course ANY moisturizing cream can do this so there's nothing special about the product.

The only thing I have against it is that it contains fragrance (and fragrance allergens) which you certainly don't need in a cream that you apply close to your eyes.

It could moisturize better if it didn't exclusively rely plant derived occlusive agents.
  • I think it's a little creepy that you can recognize a product so quickly from the ingredients list:)
  • Reminds me I want to buy the Beauty Brains books for my grandmas so they aren't duped by advertising. I have 4 grandmas because of adoption, marriage and divorce. :)
  • How is that creepy Sarah? I think its cool. #yeahchemistry
  • Thanks Randy!!
  • Sarah, just call me the Beauty Science Stalker.
  • Rozy: If you're really interested in buying 4 copies of the paperback version of our book please email me directly (at and I'll give you a break on the price.
  • Cool thanks! I can't buy them now but I will definitely keep that in mind!
