  • My scalp is dry and just overall irritated. I use some chemical treatments that are too harsh for it. Does anyone know a product to make it better?
  • I treat my dry scalp with a moisturizing conditioner. I massage the conditioner into my scalp and comb it through my hair. I put on a plastic cap and let the conditioner work for at least two minutes. If your chemical treatments adversely affect your scalp, chances are your hair is dry and damaged, so your hair would benefit from extra conditioning.
  • @Natalia: What kind of chemical treatments do you use on your hair and how often?

  • Well every 6 months I straighten my hair with something called hydroxy or something on the salon. And I also started coloring my hair at home which is the main culprit for how my scalp it right now.
  • The straightening leaves my scalp very dry and the coloring leaves my scalp very sensitive.
  • I tried the conditioner idea that Georgia pointed out and it didn't quite work. Also my scalp has been really itchy recently. And sometimes it just hurts on certain areas!

I'm slightly upset that neither of the brains have comment anything further on my situation.
  • I've had itchy scalp that hurt in some areas. A dermatologist suggested I try a medicated shampoo. I selected one that has 3% salicylic acid. I leave it on 5 or 6 minutes, rinse, and apply a moisturizing conditioner. This has helped considerably.  I wash my hair no more than twice a week and co-wash as necessary.

If all else fails, it's time to see a dermatologist.
  • @Natalia: I'm sorry but we're not aware of any product that can counteract the scalp damage you've developed from straightening  and coloring your hair. You may have to skip those processes for a while until your scalp returns to normal.  Georgia's suggestion of seeing a derm is also a good idea. I hope it gets better!
  • I can't skip those processes for a while. It's just not an option for the type of hair I have. But yes, I'll try to see my dermatologist about it as soon as possible.
  • Hi there, sorry to hear about your dry scalp. The most effective remedy for this problem is massaging the scalp with a neem and rosemary hair and scalp oil.
  • I've had a really bad scalp problem for some time now,its very itchy and irritated, I have scab like crusts and major flaking, it is so gross! I've seen two derms, they claim its either dermatitis or seborria, but everytime I have a appt. booked with them its hard to tell because it isn't as bad a usual. I've used every kind of shampoo, herbal and drugstore formulated for itchy scalps, tried not washing everyday, used cortisone treatments, you name it, everything! Hubby even bought a water filter to put on the shower, thinking that chlorine was the culprit. I am at my wits end! Please help, if anyone has had something similiar, let me know what you have done to help control this! I can't stand it anymore, and now that I'm pregnant it seems to be worse than ever! Sad
  • Have you tried Redken? I had no luck with every other brand, but the Redken dry scalp formula worked wonders for me; it's the one in the white bottle. Trick is to apply it to the head, and then just let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it out. A couple weeks of that and I was much better, but, I can't say that my original problems were as severe either... but, hope this helps,
  • I used Neutrogena T-Sal Shampoo. It has 3% salicylic acid that dislodges crusts.
