I have a skin cream that I have not been opened and storage for skin products in the tropics
  • Hello!

I have a skin cream which expired in September 2010. I have never opened it and I have stored it in the coolest room in my house as I live in the tropics. Can I open it and use it?

Also as I live in the tropics can I store my skin care products in the fridge, such as cleansers, skin creams, sun screen, toners, serums etc. I have kept a few things in my fridge such as Touche Eclat by Yves Saint Laurent, Avon clay facial cleanser and Clarins Beauty Flash Balm (which I have had for a few years!)

    Thank you for your help!

    Regards,

  • If the skin cream has an active ingredient (Retinol, sun screen, vitamin C, etc) then it may have lost its potency. It won't necessarily be bad for you to use it, but it may no longer do what it was designed to do.

On the other hand, if it's just a "regular" moisturizer and as long as it still looks and smells ok, then it's probably fine. Obviously, you should discontinue use immediately if you notice any kind of adverse reaction.

If in the unlikely event that you die from using this expired product, the Beauty Brains attorneys will deny that this conversation ever took place.

  • I've also wondered about storing products in the fridge. I am currently in Africa and it is seriously hot out here. Sometimes when I buy products, even though they are not expired, they kind of feel funny because of being stored in the heat. I think I might try doing that and see what happens
  • Storing products in the fridge is a good tip for extending their shelf life. Just be careful not to freeze them because that can have the opposite effect!
