Who are the best celebrity role models for girls/women
  • While the Britney's and the Lindsay's of the world get all the headlines, here are a few women in Hollywood that deserve more attention for being both bright and beautiful.
Do you have a favorite celebrity who's also "smart"?
  • I love the list.  Before the page opened, the first celeb I thought of was Natalie Portman, and voila, she's on the very top.  =D
There's also Reese Witherspoon who attended Stanford, and Tyra Banks who attended Loyola Marymount University for a semester.
  • I immediately thought of Natalie Portman too. I also knew that Kate Beckinsdale and Jennifer Connelly were brainy but shouldn't Jodie Foster be on the list? Maybe she's too old to be considered a role model for young women but I always think of her as the original brainy and beautiful Hollywood star.
  • I was about to add Jodie Foster but I see PR felt the same way as me about her.
I might be inclined to add Julianne Moore to the list. Her alma mater was Boston University. While I don't know the academic prestige of that school, I do think she comes off as very smart and polished when I read about her in interviews. I also like her because she is comfortable with who she is and accepts the aging process with such grace.
  • BU is a great school.
  • I would have DIED if I had gotten into BU.
I think girls my age and younger should look up to Jodie Foster.  She's a child actor that succeeded and survived in Hollywood.  Lindsay Lohan should be looking at her for advice.
  • Brooke Shields went to Princeton. She was also a child actor who was at the center of controversy when she was young. Her mother was the ultimate stage mother and an alcoholic to boot. Every time I hear someone blaming Britney or Lindsey's problems on their mothers, I think that Brooke Shields mother was just as bad but there are no pantyless pictures of her floating around on the internet. Which is not to say that I think Lindsey and Briitney's mothers are blameless.
  • Reese Witherspoon seems smart as a whip. I don't know her educational credentials though and isn't it about emotional intelligence as well ?
  • I agree with you, trueblue. I like Reese Witherspoon on so many levels.
  • I wonder if the standards for acceptance at these prominent universities are lowered for famous people.  For example, do they have amazingly high SAT scores like all the other people who were accepted?  What about their GPA?  What sort of leadership skills did they showcase?  Things that normal people are judged by.
Of course a lot of these women are smart, but having gone through high school and the whole application process not that long ago, it just makes me wonder.
For example, Michelle Kwan went to the same university as me!  But really.. what did she get on her SATs?  Or are those criteria overlooked because she's an Olympic athlete?
  • That's a great question.  I know universities will loosen admittance requirements depending on the individual.  Afterall, George Bush made it into Yale.
But people still have to go to class and pass the tests.  Getting in is one of the easier parts of getting a college degree.
  • "Afterall, George Bush made it into Yale."   ...LOL
  • I'm always a fan of Cameron Diaz for a role model for young women.
