HIghlights - before & after
  • So I'm going to get highlights tomorrow and wanted to know if I should be worried because I have been using Pantene conditioner lately and working hard to get my hair to be soft, using styling creams and the like. I know the whole Pantene being good or bad debate has been brutally exhausted many times, but regardless of whether it's good or bad for my hair, I do feel that it might be creating build-up that will hinder my highlights. If the build-up is making my hair smoother that's fine by me, but I want to be prepared for the highlights. What should I do?
I know that it's generally suggested that you shouldn't wash your hair the day you get highlights but I am considering doing it anyway - and NOT conditioning - because I want my hair to be free of build up and very clean to best "soak up" the highlights. Any thoughts?
And then, I wanted to ask you guys about deep conditioning. I recently bought the Pantene deep conditioning mask for ethnic hair (I'm blonde but the ingredients in the conditioner seemed to be the best). What can I do to maintain my highlights and keep my hair from getting suoper dry and split on the ends?
    THANKS girls!!

  • I was told not to wash my hair before coloring and highlighting my hair so that there's some oil on my scalp protecting it from the harsh chemicals.
Washing wise.. the salon normally washes my hair gently before I start the coloring process.
And I wouldn't worry too much about having too much build up in your hair.  I use a super thick shampoo and conditioner, and I don't have problems with my colors.
Do use deep conditioning treatment once or twice a week with chemically treated hair.  It keeps it soft and hydrated.  Continue using your Pantene products if it's working for you.
As for keeping your hair from getting split ends, the best solution from my experience is to get trims every 6 weeks.
  • Thanks - I didn't end up washing it this morning per your advice.
I just hope it turns out well - it always has before, I just am new to this conditioner and wanted to know if you thought it might have any effect.
  • Let the salon judge whether your hair has buildup because to some degree you want the cuticle protected a bit before coloring but not covered such that it cannot be opened which is required to deposit permanent color. An experienced colorist should be able to take the appropriate steps. As for maintainece it of course varies from person to person but I find silicones (dimethocone and its ilk) containing product to be very helpful. Remember you don't need to shampoo every day, and you don't need to use very much or scrub hard and even water can make color fade by bursting a saturated hair cuticle. The key in my mind is to do as little to the hair as possible (aka no heat-drying or styling) to maintain the best hair texture and color-maintainence. Also make sure your conditioner or better yet leave in product contains a sunscreen for your hair as UV rays will most certainly affects most hair colors. And occasional deep-conditioning using something such as olive or coconut oil can be quite helpful for brittle or dried out hair. Make sure not to brush your hair more than necessary if you don't want split ends.
