The FDA just approved a personal light-based hair removal system for in-home use. I came across the information at medicalnewstoday.com, a weekly online catalogue of science-related news, that I subscribe to and really enjoy. (Left Brain referenced it once on some other thread; that's how my husband and I got hooked!) The hair removal system will be sold through dermatologists' offices. You can read the short article about it at this link:

This is really interesting. I'll have to do a bit more digging. The article implies that the FDA has validated that the system works and I'm not really sure if that is true. It could be that it was just validated to be safe, not necessarily effective. But if it is, this could significantly improve some people's lives.
Based on PurpleRule's recommendation of a good blog for us Brainiacs, I came across this little blurb about it at this doctor's website:

It's a pity it doesn't work as well on underarms and bikini area. That's where I'd really want it to work. Still, for $800, it might be worth it. IF it works as well as they say.
I wonder how many treatments you will be able to get out of one machine. If you only have to use it every two weeks, you could get a group of your friends together to go in on the purchase. The more friends, the less you would have to pay. If not, at $800, I'll stick to shaving.
I agree with Purple Rules with underarms and bikini areas. I'd want it to work there too! But I did just tear up my leg the other day in the shower whilst shaving. It looked like a massacre, just awful and painful!
It's gonna have to be some serious light to cut through the jungle growing on my legs......ah, the things that just don't matter after you have a baby....my poor husband!
I love your idea Anne! The next new thing, screw candles....lets have a hair removal party! It might get a little out of hand if martini's are involved! I would come home with a mohawk!
Is there any reason you couldn't share it? Buying it with bunch of friends might not be a bad idea.
I wonder if this will be one of those products that drops dramatically in price once it's been on the market for a while. Remember what an iPod cost when they first came out? MP3 players are dirt cheap now.
