Given that it has been winter (although, I know that it is Spring officially next week) my scalp has been really dry. I also live in California and have to deal with hard-water - could this be causing dryness? How do I get rid of this (dry scalp)? Additionally, I think that I also struggle with product build-up every once and a while. I try switching up products for a few days, but are there any other solutions to help eliminate build up?
For dealing with product buildup I use a mixture of my regular shampoo and baking soda to make sure my hair has no buildup remaining before I color at home. In the shower I mix the shampoo and some baking soda (a tablespoon or so) together in the palms of my hands and shampoo with the mixture. It removes any product buildup there might be. It is rather drying so I only do this the night before I use semi-permanent color (every 4 weeks or so).
Your scalp might feel better if you exfoliate it. This works for me. I use regular white sugar (two teaspoons), mix in some conditioner to make a scrub and use the mixture to scrub my scalp.
My scalp used to be really oily and the ends of my (below the shoulders) hair were super dry. Due to a bad reaction in the winter to sulfates in shampoos (a burning sensation) I decided to experiment with shampoos with no sulfates. Since I don't use shampoos with sulfates I use only products with either no silicones or with water soluble silicones for conditioning and styling products. I use a no silicone conditioner to wash my hair daily and only use the no sulfate shampoo every third day. This has helped my scalp AND my hair. My scalp is much more normal now and I no longer get the oily roots by the end of the day.
That being said, what works for me might not work for you. Everyone is different. But experimenting with it couldn't hurt.
Hi, I used to have the same issue till a coupla months ago. Since I had time to research and felt experimental, I tried hair oil blends. Currently am using a blend of lavender and rosemary oil at a 3% dilution in almond oil. I just apply this every night and shower the next morning. This might work for you if you can tolerate the aroma and have time to practice this every day. I am seeing great results. I have a clean scalp and strong hair. All is well till now without any reactions.
