Hi All,
I actually just came back from South Beach, met my best friend there. After all my work to achieve my perfect shade of highlights I realized my hair is fried and frizzy!!
It turns to hay on the beach, and the hummidity doesn't help at all, I think I am headed for a "bad hair" summer. I try to deep condition every weekend, not sure if I am using the best deep conditioner (Redken's all soft).
I tried the new John frieda overnight stuff and my hair seems softer today. At this point I am willing to try anything!! I love my new shade, don't want to give it up
Any tips for keeeping hair looking it' best during the summer months?
Hey FB: I feel your frustration. MY hair hates HUMIDITY.
Try the John Frieda Weather Works...I am PRESUMING that it wouldn't harm your color and it is supposed to help with humidity. I have been using it and though it isn't really humid here in the SF Bay area it seems pretty good. I use the shampoo, conditioner, and style sealant creme though not always all together. I saw it at Target this weekend and I think the shampoo or conditioner had a little $1off NOW tag on it.
What is the John Frieds OVERNIGHT stuff?
John Frieda Frizz Ease Overnight Repair Creme Hair Serum Formula - 1.69 Oz
"Frizz Ease Overnight Repair CrFme Hair Serum helps visibly repairs breakage, split ends and deeply nourishes hair"
it seems very nice, but I just used it once, for some reason my hair in SoBe was worst, maybe it is because of more humidity
I use the serum and things like that, but it seems like it just hides a problem instead of repairing it. I guess I have to start getting trims every 8 weeks for a while
What about unrefined olive oil that the Brains say is one of the few products that can penetrate the hair's cuticle? Has anyone tried it yet?
EDIT: Oops! Should have said unrefined coconut oil. It would be used as a deep conditioner, BTW.
Just putting the oil on my hair? mmm I don't like the smell!! But my roots will get greasy right?
actually that's why I didn't like the DHC oil by the way
Keeping your hair looking its best during the summer is easy... avoid water and the sun! I wish I were kidding.
Seriously, do everything possible to avoid excessive exposure to heavily chlorinated water and the sun. Combining the two (taking a swim in a chlorinated pool and then lying in the sun) seems to increase the damage exponentially. A friend who colors her hair and swims daily always wets her hair in the shower before getting in the pool. She claims that soaking her hair with less chlorinated water reduces chlorine damage. I don't know if it's true. She also puts oil (olive oil, I think) on her hair when she gets out of the pool and washes it out later. Also, wear a hat whenever possible. I hate hats. None of them look good on me and they make my head sweat but none of the sunscreens for hair really work. You've gotta cover it up if you don't want the color to fade.
FB, try something other than olive oil. Maybe coconut oil? If you liked the way the DHC oil smells, try one of the other cleansing oils. Shu Eumera and Laura Mercier both make cleansing oils. I'm sure that there are other cheaper options out there too. I'm using the LM oil now and was planning on replacing it with the DHC oil but I'm now rethinking that since I don't like the smell of olive oil either.
u can also put conditioner in your hair BEFORE going into the pool.
how do I avoid frizzy hair during the summer? easy.. I live in a super dry area where humidity is super low! it's seriously the only way to avoid it.. want good hair? move to (southern) CA, AZ, NM, and surrounding areas. Great hair all the time!
I can't imagine putting conditioner on your hair before you get in the pool can be good for the pool unless it is a spray in conditioner but then again I use a ton of conditioner.
I find that when I am in the pool daily....and there have been weeks over the past few years where it has happened...I NEED to use not only a regular contitioner, but also a spray in one as well...but it is not for frizzies, it's just for soft hair...I have straight hair so fortunately it doesn't have humidity issues...now my face on the other hand...that's a different story for a different thread...
thanks all for your suggestions
I have wavy hair, mostly stright, and never had a problem while leaving at home, and not being blond
Apparently bleaching your hair and living in a hot humid summer is not good for the frizzies. I do not swim, but may have to start
Since I just came back from the doctor and was forbidden from doing high impact activities ever again, I ahve "dancer feet" or al ess galmorous wayt to put it: "degenerative arthtritis on my toe bone due to trauma", I am so bummed. If you have a daugther, never ever let them be ballerinas and go on points. I also can't wear high heels anymore!! although I think I can pull them off if I am not standing for more than 10 min.
I am soo upset, and the frizzy hair doesn't make me happy either, I am going to try everything I can!!
I live in heels! Not stilettos, but love stacked heels. You might try the new platform shoes. The ones with a regular heel, but the foot bed has a small platform. they have the look of a regular high heel, but don't put as much pressure on the foot.
I've used a mixture of coconut oil and olive oil on my hair several times. I let it sink in for about 30 minutes before I shampoo. It does seam to make the hair stronger, but you still need a conditioner to smooth the cuticle. I've read that Tresemme has a hair mask that rivals Fekkai, plus its only $5.00. I want to try it, but haven't been able to find it anywhere.
If you do take up swimming, there is a product, can't remember the name , that you put on your hair before getting in the water. It coats your hair to protect it. You shampoo it out after swimming. The last thing you want is for your beautiful highlights turning green from the chlorine.
Yeah, the parasites don't care about stilletos, I just use them to go out, so it is ocassional and I am not going to give them up, I am reseraching the Dr-scholls inserts, I think I am going to put some of them in all the shoes I love, anyone uses them?
However I am a fitness instructor, so I'll have to stop teaching bootcamp, kickboxing and all the high impatc stuff and go easy on my dance class, so bad I choreographed this awesome hip-hop choreography and I can't jump (by the way, does someone watch the new Bravo reality show Step it up and dance, it's awesome, I gave up my dance troupe for grad school)
I guess I'll have to stick to Pilates and low impact cardio, that's fine, will be better in the long run
Oh FB that does suck about the heels. I can't really wear heels for any lenght of time due to stupid ingrown toenails...they are brutal. I know that Lynnette who has commented a few times on here has sdvised a tool but I haven't gotten around to it. I just want surgery to remove them!
Oh and I have the cutest pair of Puma flats....kind of sporty, but not for exercising in and I went to wear them yesterday and they hurt my toes after only about 30 minutes. I was so so sad.
FB..You might want to check out Foot Petals @ footpetals.com. They make foot pads specifically for heels. I haven't tried them, but I've heard they are good.
Thanks Anne
going back to hair, my haridresser says I should get a trim every 8 weeks, how often do you trim your hair?
Does everyone get a haircut so often?
I get my hair cut every 5 weeks because it needs to be colored then but also because my hair is short and wavy it get "out of control" if it goes too long without a trim.
I should get my hair cut every 5 weeks, but if I stretch it to 6 weeks, it always falls on the same day of the week. Its just easier to remember my appointment. If my hair gets two heavy before my next cut, I just thin it out with thinning shears.
When I'm not flat broke it's color + cut every 6 weeks, and highlights every 12 weeks.
My hair grows really fast, and I find that trimming it so often really helps keep it healthier and free of split ends.
Oh man you ladies are good. I probably go every 8-10 weeks and that is for everything cut and color....usually by then my hair is so brownish blonde that everyone in the salon is amazed to see how lovely it looks when he is finished with my red color...And sometimes I would rather spend money on good food and drink. Just last night I made the most delicious Chicken Tiki Masala but I had to spend what I would on my hair to get the ingredients and they had to be the freshest...I'll admit I'm a food snob :)
Pretty soon I will have to start WALKING to my stylist if I want to be able to afford his services AND GAS.
My hair grows fast too and because it is naturally curly once it gets just a bit too long it goes bonkers and won't do anything. And I too have the fade problem with my reddish hair color. I usually use the John Frieda Glaze between colorins but unless I am careful it can make my hair orange instead of reddish.
OK,
so it is not that unusual to get it cut that often, I admit it I cut it eveyr 3 months at best. In any case doing the math it will be totally worth it if it makes my hair healthier. I do not pay for my highlights and the difference between a blowout and a trim is 20 bucks, and they always blow dry it when you cut
Yeah, I'm a nerd!! I did the math and the difference will onyl be 20 bucks, let's see if cutiign more often and some more deep conditioning will help my hair not look fried this summer.
Has anyone tried the organix coconut hair mask? I herad it is great and ridiculously cheap
I've wanted to try the John Frieda Glaze but I don't know what color it'll turn my highlights! Plus I don't do a normal red for my hair, so I'm scared it'll look weird, like a smorgasboard of colors.
I haven't tried the Organix hair mask, but I do like the shampoo and conditioner. Have you tried the coconut oil on your hair? I think it does strengthen the hair, and its inexpensive too.
I still can't find any of the Organix products locally. I tried the John Frieda Glaze and wasn't impressed. I did nothing to enhance the color although it did make my hair nice and shiny. I didn't care for the smell either.
Well, I am going to gte a 7 week trim and refresh my highlights tomorrow
I've been using the John Frieda overnight treatment and really like it, I usually shower at night, but I am OK to do it in the morning, since oyu ahve to rinse it out
I think is going to take some TLC, I've tried oils, but my scalp usually gets greasy very fast and oils make it worse, even if I try to avoid the roots, I have layears around my face that get quite dry and putting oil of them makes them look disgusting. I have greasy scalp, dry ends and work out a lot, so the balance is hard ot strike. I try not to wash my hair that often, and started using dry shampoo once in a while, but I just can't go that long without shampooing.
Maybe I'll buy the organix mask, it's so cheap it doesn't hurt if it doesn't work. I've been using the glaze but I don't see any difference. On the other hand, you are supposed to shampoo and condition and then put it on and wait 5 min before rinsing? what am I supposed to do in 5 min? stare at the shower head?
If you want a professional flat iron and you are ok with spending around $140 I would highly recommend the Karmin G3 Salon Pro, it heats up to 450f with temperature control, dual voltage, tourmaline ceramic plates with rounded edges which makes it great for also curling your hair. Also has a 3 year warranty. If you are in the US you can buy from http://HairProductsPro.com, they are also giving away a free heat matt/carrying case and some heat serum that works really well. If you are in Canada you can buy at http://www.hairtools.ca/. If you do look at other irons make sure to stay away from irons with painted plates (colored plates) these can damage your hair.
A little about plate quality:
* Aluminum 90s and low quality, will stick to your hair and terrible results.
* Colored Plates Stay away from these, they may look nice but they are for show and they are not good for your hair.
* Ceramic Plates White or Yellowish color plate These plates are good but they are older technology from around 2002. Many companies still use these as it is cheaper to manufacture than a tourmaline ceramic plate.
* Titanium Plates Gun Metal Grey color These are great plates and provide great results. These and Tourmaline Ceramic plates are about the same in quality but work different with different hair types. You would need to try both to see which one provides the best results for your hair type.
* Tourmaline Ceramic Gun Metal Grey in color These are currently the best plates on the market. currently I only see Karmin and Sedu using these plates. It appears all the other brands are focused on cutting costs by using the cheaper plates.
Some features you should look for:
* Variable Temperature Control (If you have thick hair make sure it heats up to at least 420F)
* Swivel Cord
* At least a 3 year warranty (most hair straighteners will die in the first year or two)
* If you travel then make sure its dual voltage
You can also check reviews at http://flatironsreviews.com to see their ranking of the top 10 flat irons. Good luck and I hope this helps.
I just bought the pink straightener and I love it :)
