What is a good basic moisturizer to use for the face?
  • What is a good basic moisturizer to use for the face?
  • It depends on your skin. Is it dry oily, combination, sensitive? Sensitive skins are dry, oily, etc.
  • my skin is sensitive...in which it gets dry and tight after washing usually
  • Try cerave pm - I love it.  If you try it, bear in mind that it's time release so it will only feel slightly moisturizing when you first apply it, but after a little while, it really kicks in.
  • I have dry sensitive skin. I use two non-detergent rinse-off cleansers: Estee Lauder Verite LightLotion Cleanser and Pevonia Botanica Sensitive Skin Cleanser. I find it's a good idea to use a serum under my moisturizer. I like Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Supplement. I've discovered that taking care of my skin is about finding the right skin care routine, not about one perfect product.
  • And my favorite gentle cleanser is Paula's Choice skin recovery cleanser.
  • I like CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion, Foaming Cleanser and Hydrating Cleanser. They don't irritate or dry out my skin. They are the least-irritating products I've found aside from pure mineral oil and vaseline.

My skin is dry and I'm allergic to a lot of ingredients even in products made for sensitive skin. A lot of products make my skin or eyes turn red or itchy. I like these CeraVe products because they don't have sodium lauryl
sulphate or phenoxyethanol in them, two ingredients that irritate my
skin. These three CeraVe products don't have phenoxyethanol in them, but some of the other CeraVe products have it and my local drugstore-brand copy of CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser has it. Phenoxyethanol is not a bad ingredient for everyone, but it's a masking fragrance/preservative, and I'm allergic to it. A lot of products for sensitive skin use it as an alternative to parabens, probably because so many people believe parabens are dangerous. But I think the Brains say that parabens are less likely to cause allergic reactions than most other preservatives, and they are OK for me.
  • See--scaremongerers are ruining the world.  They scare everyone away from parabens and something worse gets substituted.  Pet peeve alert!
  • Yeah, there is something about the cerave products that is extremely soothing.  Also very effective as moisturizer compared to other products I've tried.  I have normal/combo skin but in the winter my cheeks get dry and moisturizing well (especially at night after my rosacea topical) keeps my rosacean skin soothed.  My local drugstore has a copy of the cleanser too, maybe I'll try it (or the brand name one).
  • Toleriance Fluid is very light and just disappears when applied.
