Companies Owning Several Lines Of Cosmetics
  • I'm very new to cosmetics. I've hated them for years and it's only been in the past month that I've actually had fun with them. My question is why do companies own so many brands? Estee Lauder owns Prescriptives, Clinique and I think Origins. Lancome owns L'Oreal who has several brands under that name as well.

If their products are so wonderful..why hide under other brands? I know the car manufacturers do it to..Honda owns Acura. I just find it confusing and wonder why I'm paying more for one line over another if they are owned by the same company.
  • Companies own other brands because different people like to buy different brands.  The truth is the products are often the same with minor changes such as fragrance and color.  You don't really buy the products based on what they are worth.  You buy them based on what people are willing to pay.
You would be amazed at how many different brands companies like P&G, Unilever and L'Oreal own.
It's a thing they have to do out of necessity however.  You see, people are just not loyal to certain products.  Beauty products are particularly vulnerable.  People are always looking for the next best thing and will stop using one brand just to try something else.  When companies have multiple brands, that "something else" will often be something they own.
    Just business I guess.
  • Thank you so much. I figured as such but it makes a new person really confused with all the choices. No wonder when I finally find something I love they change it. LOL.
