Do you have to wash your hair with SLS or sodium Laureth sulfate to get buildup of your hair? Is there a milder detergent... Also I dilute my shampoo because SLS is harsh with water 1 cup. I use a meduim amount that I would use for my hair. Do that make less effective still have ability to cleanse my hair?
I will have to defer to the Brains on this one. I know only a little about sulfates. I tend to avoid them because my scalp reacts badly to them in winter. Since I avoid sulfates I also avoid silicones in conditioners and styling products unless they are silicones of the water soluble variety, making them easier to remove.
That being said, when I want to clarify my hair to remove any sort of buildup there might be before coloring once a month I use a bit of baking soda mixed into my shampoo (mixing it in the palm of my hand as I get ready to use it). It can leave my hair feeling a bit rough so I always follow with my regular conditioner.
Perhaps the Brains can answer you question, which if I am understanding it correctly, is are you diluting your shampoo too much with water for it to be effective. It does sound to me like that is diluting it a bit too much. I know that many salon shampoos can be cut half and half with water and still be effective, according to their labels. Hopefully the Brains will answer!
Not a Brain, but liquid detergents and liquid soaps can be diluted satisfactorily. I dilute Neutrogena Shampoo, Anti-Residue Formula half and half with distilled water. It's just as effective, but more gentle on hair and scalp. I even dilute Dawn dishwashing detergent. It's a matter of finding the correct dilution ratio for your needs.
