KP/Skin question
  • I suffer from Keratosis Pilaris (KP). My doctor recommended I use lotion containing Urea to alleviate the symptoms and to use a non soap or beauty bar rather than soap. I purchased these items and have just started using them. Typically when I shower, I use soap and body wash. My question is, should I avoid using a body wash entirely? Can I use it on areas where I don't have the KP rash? Can you recommend a non soap wash? Any advice or recommendations on the subject of KP would be much appreciated. Thanks! -Clover

Just to be safe you should probably use this all over and not just on the KP areas. But if you want to be sure, double check with your doctor.
  • there's some great KP forum out there, when I was doing my research as I suffer from it as well a lot of results came up in google. people even share before and after photos and their treatment plans. A lot of people had to go through urea/glycolic/BHA route, I know a few people who eliminated SLS from their routine and saw it go away. Nothing works for me though, so I just made my peace. Actually one thing that helps is tanning, but I burn easily and am prone to birthmarks and freckles so I avoid the sun.
  • Clover, I recommend you to use soaps less often, washing the kp affected areas everyday is not necessary. I have kp all over my body except palms, soles and stomach and use an unescented body wash only once a week over the kp affected areas, it helps to diminish redness.

The only thing that has almost cleared ( about 80%) the kp in my arms is a 10% solution of salicylic acid applied twice a week -I havent tried it in other body areas cause it would be too expensive-.Theres people that improved with the 2% over the counter products though, I havent tried that cause for some reason theres no such products available in my country. You can check this option with your doctor.

The old advice of drinking a lot of water and always moisturize also helps, but kp treatment is very tricky, as you know theres no universal treatment. You can check keratosispilaris.org, a community where people share and discuss their treatments.

  • actually for me it helps to wash the areas daily, it diminishes KP by 50%. using body scrubs doesn't work for me, but it works great for my sister, she uses body scrubs on her KP every other day. So yeah, there's no definite answer, just trial and error as KP treatment is very personal.
