Hi all. I am new to this type of communication. I live on the ocean on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada in the town of Sooke. I am an Executive Director, do volunteer work, walk on the beach, love to read and socialize with my women friends. I am 55 years old and have always taken care of my skin. I have very few wrinkles although I am starting to see age spots (red and brown) and hate the slackness around my mouth. Can't afford and not brave enough for plastic surgery. For many years I used Nivea but as I got older I started looking at other products. Recently I decided that I needed to do more research on skin care and anti aging products. Boy, what a mistake that has turned out tIo be!! I am more confused than ever. I can't remember all the names of all the products I have read about (post menopausal memory breakdown - LOL) but I did find a site called Hydroderm that gives great free samples for just shipping and handling - full size samples not just tiny tubes - two large tubes of 'bodyshape' cellulite cream; a liquid serum and face cream; and just got another offer in my email for Triple Effects Eye Serum - amazing for $5.95!!! I was reading some of the discussions and went onto Ebay but again - WHAT REALLY WORKS???? Obagi New Derm Clear; Reversa Anti Aging; WHAT the heck is tretinoin; Mere de la Mer anti aging; clinique zero gravity; retinol green tea; vitamin K creme; derna E with tea tree oil; bee pollen; avacado; Good heavens, what's a girl to do!!
Now I use St Ives peach scrub when I shower
At night I cleanse with Aveeno skin brightening cleanser (my skin does not seem brighter!)
Yves Rocher Botanical Night Creme - no change - it is rather heavy on my skin so can't use in the day before makeup it is too heavy
I am using the free sample Hydroderm Mineral face powder and bronzing powder - I like it a lot
I use the usual variety of liners and mascara(usually Maybelline)
I have been looking at the products that other members list on the discussion site. Where do you guys GET this stuff. I have never heard of most of it!! at least not in BC Canada!!
And then there are ingredients. The more I look up the more I am confused.................. HELP!
Welcome kerrieruth! Stick around the BB site and forum and you too can become an expert on beauty products and ingredients. Like you I am too new to all of this. I woke up one day in my 50s and thought "Yikes...I need some HELP before it is too late". Lots of this is just trial and error and buying products that work for YOU.
However to prevent yourself from making too many mistakes I would direct you to these sites which are most helpful.
www.cosmeticscop.com/
www.makeupalley.com/
Paula Begoun's site is INVALUABLE for educating yourself on product lines and ingredients. I bought her recent book and subscribe to Beautypedia.com (you can find coupons on line to get a half-price subscription) too keep current and it is well worth it. She DOES sell her own line of excellent products of which I prefer the skin care but not the makeup.

Make Up Alley is good for getting a sense of how popular a given product is with USERS. A good overview because so many people post so you get a good cross-section of opinion.
What do I currently use: Comodynes Make-Up Remover Sheets; Cetaphil Cleanser; L'Oreal Toner, Neutrogena Dry-Touch Sunscreen as moisturizer; Revlon Color Stay Foundation, Olay Anti-aging Firming Night Cream with Paula Begoun's Super Anti-Oxidant Serum.
Olay and Neutrogena have lots of good products...I buy what is on sale.
Hope this helps and, again, welcome.
I agree with all the websites that Judy listed.
I also like www.newbeauty.com Go to the daily beauty link at the top of their website and its a blog on face, body, skin, hair, spa, smile, anti-aging. They post recent studies on aging and skin, product reviews, and useful information covering topics on every part of your body!
They also have a magazine, NewBeauty. From what I see on their website, I think the latest issue is out now in stores. The magazine is printed only 4 times a year. You can buy a subscription online too. It's $10 a magazine..and a little cheaper if you buy a year long subscription or so. I love their magazine. It has so much great information on skin and aging...its also focused on cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery...so if you are interested in those topics as well then this is a great magazine for you.
thanks for those great comments and web link tips judy and darkeyes. I have also done some reading and checking but I will put all those sites on my favourites and spend some time finding out more. I stumbled on this site by accident and have done some surfing and love the beauty brains!
Go to the hydroderm.com site and get the very large free samples for shipping (5.95) costs only. Not sure yet if they work but I get an email every few days for a new 30 day sample.
I will pass on any miracles that I find haha................

Hi, nice to meet you. I have had my eye vision done about 5 days ago-Lasik- and the doc gave a moisturizing product called hyalouronique acid for my eyes(spelling) which he called a moisturizer and which I recocgnized as a filler used in invasive procedures-can be injected into the area from nose to mouth to fill in lines. He made me smile when he repeated after that "These are for the eyes;ma'am"
It's appears to have very natural effects but has been case -documented to also have had necrotic effects( tissue and nerve destruction).
I think any certified/FDA approved Retin-A product has a good rep.
I just asked my dermatologist about this last week. He rated topical retinoids as the very best anti-aging cream for your skin and Alpha Hydroxy Acid as the next best thing. Unfortunately, I don't tolerate either very well.
I just finished a series of 6 microdermabrasions. I had to stop using topical retinoids for 6 weeks and realized after about 4 weeks that the ruddiness was almost gone. I didn't realize how much the retinoid cream irritated my skin; I guess I just got used to it. Surprisingly, the lactic acid applications that followed each microdermabrasion session didn't irritate my skin so I'm going to keep up with that and drop the retinoids. The moral of the story is, keep trying until you find a routine that works for you. I had myself convinced that retinoids were fine for me but AHAs and BHAs were not, when the opposite was really true.
Purple: I just got a freebie microdermabrasion certificate at my dermatologist's office and am thinking of scheduling that soon. Would I even see a difference after just one procedure? I noticed they had better pricing if you got a package of four or six treatments. Also, is there any down time needed? I have a wedding to attend in August and am wondering if I need to be careful with the scheduling of this appointment.
After the first few, I usually think "Well that was a waste". It doesn't make things worse but it's not until the 3rd or 4th session that I start to notice an improvement. There's no downtime but I'm usually a bit pinker the next day but the LM tinted moisturizer is more than enough to cover it.
