Where Did My Curls Go?
  • Twice a week I wash and condition my hair in the morning, adding gel for body. When my hair dries, I have tight curls. As the day goes on, however, the curls fall out and my hair is merely wavy. Why do the curls fall out, and is there anything I can do to keep my hair curly?
  • have you tried curl cream? some hairspray will help as well
  • It can take a lot of experimenting to get what works for you Georgia. Have you tried going on the naturallycurly.com site and figuring out what 'type' of curls or waves you have? Once you figure it out you can go on the forum on that site and read postings by other curly girls (and even some guys) who have hair like yours. By reading the products they list in their signatures you can narrow the list of possibles to try.

Have you tried simply misting your hair with water and re-scrunching it later in the day? The little bit of water will reactivate the product you already have in your hair. I do that with my hair with great success.

I have to use a gel with a little more hold or the curls in the canopy (outer layer)  loosen into waves later in the day too. I had my favorite product until recently when the formula changed and my favorite product no longer worked like it had before. So now the search is on again.

For me curl creams just soften the hold and make the curls loosen even more. Hairspray makes it feel rough and stiff.

I hope you find what works for you.
  • i'm sure you know what worksd for you, but about the hairsprays - there are different on the market, some don't make it crunchy at all. i use one like that Loreal Elnett unfragranced extra hold when I curl my hair and doesn't leave your hair crunchy even if you overspray it plus it doesn't stink like the rest of hairsprays do. i always found gels to be more crunchy than any hairspray :)
  • Gels ARE crunchy until you scrunch the crunch (once the hair is completely dry). Hairspray tends to make my hair feel differently than gels do though. The crunchy part will scrunch out but hairsprays tend to leave the hair itself feeling rough. I am sure there is a reason why but unfortunately I don't have the explanation.

I have never tried the Elnett. I know many stylists swear by it.
    :)
  • elnett has the brush out hairsprays, that's the one that doesn't feel crunchy on your hair and you can brush it out and your hair is the same as before. give it a go, maybe you will like it. I surely do, I never used to wear hairpsray before I tried this
  • I may try it at some point! Right now I am experimenting with Kinky Curling Curling Custard. The Kinky Curly Knot Today was backordered and hasn't arrived yet. So far I like the custard, even by itself.
