  • Is hair spray really that bad for your hair?
  • No it's not bad for your hair at all. (Unless you're damaging your hair by trying to brush through a hard to hold hairspray.)
  • Oh that's a relief, because I use a lot of hairspray. It's funny though, because I've read a lot of about how the chemicals in hairspray really damage your hair and how hair spray is bad for the environment lungs. So it's relief that it isn't bad for my hair at all. =)
  • Well you actually shouldn't be breathing the fumes if I understand it correctly. The fumes ARE bad for your lungs. Or maybe I got that wrong? Brains? Yes or no? (Thanks!!)
  • Fumes of anything are bad for you lungs in excessive amounts so you should use in a ventilated area and take care not to breathe too much in.
  • Thanks alchemist! It may not help a lot but I hold my breath while spraying and then move out of the room before I start breathing again. Sort of spray and run.   ;;)
  • But hairspray isn't bad for your hair right? I do the same thing spray (usually near a window) and run.
  • Nope. Right Brain says it isn't bad for your hair unless you are trying to brush through hard to hold hairspray. I would think if you did that you would end up with breakage, especially if you did it very often!
  • Thanks Right Brain, Lindygirl and alchemist! =)
  • Regarding the safety issue: the particle size of hairspray droplets are measured to ensure they're above the size that can penetrate deep into the lungs. if I remember correctly the minimum size has to be above 10 µ.
  • Does that mean hairspray isn't bad for your lungs?
  • That's right.
  • what about the chemicals in the hairspray like bad alcohols that can dry out your hair. can that lead to less moisturized and shiny strands?
  • 12.0pt;line-height:115%;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">It’s not only
bad for your hairs but it’s bad for your lungs too. So if you must use it, use
it in a well ventilated room.

  • @ zeldabacon - please refer to Right Brain's replies in this thread on June 27 and June 30.

@ Right Brain - thanks for the head's up about particle size. I learned something new today!
