Is Retin-A safe for long term use?
  • Hi!
I've used Retin-A (0.5%) for over 6 months for my persistent acne scars. I LOVE it! It is very effective, and my skin has never looked better! I really think this is an HG product, and really want to continue using it for as long as possible. However, I've heard/read many concerns about how Retin-A is very toxic and potentially cancerous if used long term?!? Please help! I love Retin-A, but there is no other product like it. Should I stop after a certain time?
  • retin a is vitamin A basically and the only health concern I'm aware of when it comes to vitamin A is birth defects when taken while pregnant or right before conceiving and bone density issues. there's no cancer link to vitamin A as far as I'm aware, especially the one applied topically on your skin
  • Thanks Ally! :)
  • There is no harm in using small amount that you would use on your face; it should not hurt your liver. So it’s absolutely ok to use retin in long term but you should keep in mind that you have to avoid this product if you had sunburn or broken skin.

  • I've been using Retin A for over 20 years. Initially for acne and now to keep the wrinkles at bay (cosmetic). I think it is a great products and will continue to use for another 20+ years.
When you use Retin A, your skin becomes very sensitive to the sun, therefore more susceptible to sunburns. Always use sunscreen daily and apply the Retin A in the pm.
  • To add to what cyw said... be careful with hair removal treatments like waxing.  Retin-A does make your skin sensitive and it also exfoliates and thins the skin which can cause your skin to lift during this type of treatment.
