Arbonne Makeup
  • After reading your review of Arbonne I decided to see what that company might tell me if I wrote them and asked point blank whether the ingredients used in thier products were ever tested on animals. I told them I realized the finished product was not tested on animals, but asked if indeed the ingredients had been tested on animals. Below is their response:

Does this fall in line with how you view Arbonne from the Scientific standpoint? It does not seem to agree with what I read that you wrote.

  • Can't comment specifically on Arbonne but in most (all?) cases where people are claiming that the ingredients used in their products have never being tested on animals they are being disingenuous or ingnorant.  Almost all ingredients have had some animal testing done on them in the past.  It's only relatively new (last 10 years or so) materials that wont have been tested by some one some where.

So how do people say their ingreidient is not tested on animals?

Company B started making Ingedient X back in the 80's some time as was the practive back then they tested on animals (LD50, skin irritation eye irritation, etc)

    Fast forward a few years
Company B (or Company C) creates a new material W which is a blend of ingredient X and ingredient Y.  They don't bother doing any testing since they already have the results on X and Y and the toxicoligist writes a justification that the mixing the two together wont make a difference to the toxicity.  Maybe they did a human RIPT just to make sure and it's a handy marketing tool.  Cosmetic Manufacturer rings up and asks has W been tested on animals, Company B (or C) says no W has not been tested on animals.  The Cosmetic Manufacturer says the materials we use has not been tested on animals.

Company E starts making X, but they don't need to do animal testing because all the test reports or independant reviews of test reports are available in the public domain (such as here for Cyclomethicones). Cosmetic manufacturer rings up Company E and asks if they've tested Ingredient X on animals, and the response is no.  The Cosmetic Manufacturer says the materials we use has not been tested on animals.

  • @Vanilla Musk: As usual, Alchemist has said it better than I could have. I hope that answers your question.
  • The response says that the ingredients "are not" tested on animals.  It doesn't say the ingredients were not formerly tested.  I would think many ingredients in use today have been tested at some point in history on animals---even if 20 years or more.  I'm not sure what the issue with that is personally (meaning past testing--before better alternatives were in place).  Afterall, times change---when we know better we do better---.
