Does heat make nail polish thicker?
  • I've noticed since I've been in my summer apartment (that has no AC...) that 2 of my polishes have become absolutely goopy for no apparent reason.   It has been in the upper 80's to the low 90's since I've been here and I'm wondering, does that has an effect on the polishes?  And is it reversible?  *crosses fingers*

    Thanks!!
  • Polish thinner will work to make it thinner. (That is thinner, not polish remover. You can find it at beauty supply stores.) As to why it is getting thicker? So far as I know high temps could do that, but I am not entirely sure. Maybe the Brains will answer.
  • There are two things that could be happening, both accelerated by heat

    1.  The solvent is evaporating, in this case using a polish thinner should work to thin the product back to what it was before.  You should make sure your thinner is the same solvent used in the polish.

    2.  The lacquer is begining to harden, possibly exacerbated from the above.  In this case the thinner may not work.
  • Does putting the nail polish in the fridge help preserve them?
  • Cold temperatures would slow down the two issues above, but it could cause another issue...

At low temperatures the solubulity of some ingredients in the carrier solvent could be decreased which would lead them to seperate or crystalize out.
  • Dang it nail polish is so annoying. Thank you for your answer alchemist!
