DevaCurl and hair loss
  • So. I've been fighting with my naturally curly hair since my late teens. I've recently let it grow out (mostly due to pure laziness) and have noticed in the last year to year and a half that it's been uber dry and frizzy. And of course like all us curlies I have used/tried almost every product on the market. I know the dryness is NOT from heat styling cause, well, I don't use heat on my hair. And in the last few month I've been reading a lot about the "warnings" of sulfates and silicones on naturally curly hair (that it dries it out even further etc etc).

Jump to 6 weeks ago - I discovered a new product in my area (well, new to ME anyways) called DevaCurl. It promises healthy, shiny, manageable and above all, moisturized hair. It's also "all natural" I have to prefeace this by saying I DO like the product and I have noticed my hair has felt more manageable, soft and VERY shiny. HOWEVER, I have noticed an increased amount of hair shedding - especially in the shower. Needless to say, this is freaking me out. I have heard rumours about the WEN system causing hair loss - has anyone heard the same regarding the DevaCurl system?

    Best,
    Michelle
  • Michelle,

I have naturally curly hair and have been wearing straight forever. I work as a receptionist at a salon that sells the deva curl line, so naturally was converted over to being a 'deva girl'. My curls were just like yours, great frizz free and hydrated. Then after using the whole line for the summer I noticed the same thing, large amounts of hair falling out when I washed it. I have 3x the amount of hair as the average person so those who didn't know me couldn't tell but I FREAKED out!! (still am)
I have been asking around at work and this is what I was told. Deva curl products work by using your natural oils to hydrate your hair by not stripping them out when washing. This is something we are not used to, And for a very small amount of people by not cleaning your scalp and freeing it of those oils it can cause pimples, rashes and prevent all of your hair from being hydrated, which may case it to fall out some not being able to get the vitamins and things it needs. Most people never have any issues, infact most of the girls at work had never heard about anyone having that reaction.
I was recommended to get protein treatments on my hair and switch to a hydrating shampoo. I was told however that if I wanted to use the gel I could since none of it gets on your scalp really.
I would recommend moroccan oil and there shampoo and cond. or Alternas caviar shampoo and cond. I also got biotin as well.

    Good Luck!
  • I have have naturally curly hair and I went to a salon last year and they used deva curl products in my hair. I also purchased a bottle of the Deva Curl no poo shampoo and used both the gel and shampoo for a few days. I started having increased hair shedding immediately and it has never stopped, I have 3x the amount of shedding everytime I wash my hair even though I stopped using it for a long time. I don't know what to do, has anyone found a solution to stop this excessive hair shedding? I've been to the doctor 3 times and the dermatologist and it is a now a chronic condition. Please help!

  • Hi Michelle -

I've used the Deva Curl lo poo shampoo with great success.  I've tried many brands since I originally purchased - including Wen - but I prefer the Deva Curl lo poo shampoo and will likely repurchase. Perhaps you should try co-washing.  There is an post about it on the Beauty Brains blog and tons of information on the web about the curly girl method of styling.

I actually returned my bottle of Wen because I didn't experience anything fascinating enough to justify its purchase. After reading what the Brains had to say about Wen and Vo5 conditioners, I went out and purchased and experienced greater softness with my .85 cent purchase than my $29.00 bottle of Wen.  Who would have thunk it?!  LOL!
  • @ Fayse - I would suspect that your hair shedding is caused by something other than the Deva Curl products. In my opinion you are on the right track by seeking a doctor's advice and treatment.

@ chica - I have never tried any of the fancy stuff. VO5 conditioner is absolutely great for co-washing. I particularly like Vanilla Mint myself. Suave Coconut will do when I cannot find the VO5. (For some reason the VO5 is rather hard to find in my area.)
  • I've heard of it and theres a company that made something very similar to it ..if you want to use your own

  • I am so glad my Google search brought me here....I have been using DevaCurl for several months.  I love how my hair looks and feels, but I too am suffering with extreme hair loss.  It is somewhat comforting to know others are experiencing this when using the product.  So what I would like to know is does anyone have anymore suggestions to other products I can use?  I would love to be able to walk into CVS and buy something reasonably priced right off the shelves.  I hate to leave the DevaCurl products because my hair looks good, but I am scared about further hair loss.  Thanks for any suggestions!
  • One thing to remember if you've just started wearing your hair curly is that your hair won't fall out over the course of the day.  You still shed just as much, but all of it comes loose in the shower, rather than falling free from the rest of your hair during the day, so it can look like it's a lot more coming out.  Obviously, this is less applicable if you've been wearing your hair curly for a while, but if not, it might account for a lot of what you're seeing.
