Keeping my style and hair
  • I am relatively new to the hair styling world so I would like to know how to keep my style and my hair from major damage. My hair is long and thick, even though I just got it layered and thinned it won't last forever. I have recently bought a revlon tourmaline ceramic styling iron that has 30 heat settings (the guide that came with it recommended a heat level of 15-22 for my hair) and it worked perfect on my hair until after a few days I noticed heat marks in my hair. What do I do? And also since my hair has trouble holding a curl what do you recommend for safely keeping my style in for more than a few hours?
  • I am not a hairdresser and not a Brain but here is my two cents worth. Heat styling can be very damaging. Hair will burn. Once it is burned? Well...it would depend on how bad your burned areas are but I have seen women who had to have the burned parts cut off. Good thing hair does grow back...

You didn't say if your  hair is naturally straight or is wavy. I am guessing not curly since you do say your hair has trouble holding curl. Have you tried mousse in damp hair? That will add some styling hold. Hair spray after you finish styling will add more hold as well. Do you use a heat protectant spray before you use the styling iron?

Your hairdresser is a good source of information. He or she can tell you what products you can use to style your hair. The products do not need to be expensive. Drugstore varieties work just fine. It takes some experimenting to find what works for you.

All that being said, speaking from my own experience, it is loads easier to just enhance the natural texture of your hair. My hair is wavy/curly and for years I dried it straight. I fought with it. I lived through summertimes of a halo of frizz. Then I got tired of fighting it and decided to go with the natural texture and see where that led. One of my best decisions ever. Most of us want what we don't have. If we have straight hair, we want curls. If we have curls, we want straight hair.

I hope you find what works for you. Hopefully someone else will have better input and insight than me or, perhaps, the Brains will comment.
  • Well my hair is somewhat wavy and I want a romantic curls look and I was iffy on the heat protectant spray because I didn't know that much about it and what kind to get for my hair. Thankfully the burns weren't that bad they were gone the next day.

I have never tried the mousse in damp hair but my hair stylist did tell me that I should have clean dry hair, take about inch or 2 of hair, hairspray it and curl. It looked great but my style went flat soon after. And I have been told that you shouldn't put product in your hair until after you style so I am just all kinds of confused so hopefully the Brains could help out soon.

  • You would use the mousse in your damp hair, then dry it and then, and only then, use your styling iron. Never use a flat iron, curling iron, or styling iron on your hair unless it is completely dry.

Your stylist's recommendation to use hair spray and then curl the hair does work. As you noticed it also doesn't hold so well sometimes. I have seen it done, but the stylist always sprayed, heavily, again once finished with the curling. For my own personal taste that would never work. I can't stand the feel of that much product in my hair.
  • Thanks :). Hopefully one of the Brains would comment so we both can have expert opinion but I definitely will try the mousse in damp hair. But that makes me wonder what is the difference from using it on wet hair vs. dry hair?
  • With super fine hair it tends to give the hair a little more bulk so the hair will hold a style better when it is put into wet hair. Once you blow dry the hair it will have more body. (My mother's hair is like this.) That is just observation on my part.
