Need help with dry hair.
  • My hair is very dry. What is the best brand of shampoo and conditioner do you recommend me for my dryhair?
    GILDA
  • There is no BEST brand because these things are often a matter of personal preference.  I also think most shampoos are similar so just pick one that ISN'T for Oily Hair.  I have used Suave and John Frieda and frankly, there is probably not much difference.
However, conditioner or dry hair treatments can help you.  I have found Neutrogena Triple Moisture Recovery Mask to be a very good product.  Neutrogena has a daily moisturizer conditioner  too if you prefer.  However I find that my color treated naturally curly hair responds better with a once-a-week treatment.  You can overcondition.

    Good luck.
  • Great point Judy.  The only way you can really find out what is best for your hair is to try many different products.  I encourage you to start with the least expensive store brands and slowly build up until you find something you like.
  • Thanks for your advice. Can I use shampoo and conditioner the same brand or these can be different ?

  • There is really no functional benefit to matching shampoos and conditioners.  The only thing that may be beneficial is that the fragrance will typically match.  But as far as things working, you can mix any brands you like.
  • Gilda, you didn't say WHY your hair was dry.  Just naturally dry or is it overprocessed?  Conditioning can help both, of course.
  • My hair is naturally dry. I color my hair every 4 weeks. I used to straighten my hair 6 years ago but no any more.

  • If you're coloring every 4 weeks, it's not nature that's making your hair feel dry, it's the coloring.
  • I have my hair colored every 5 weeks and fortunately don't have a big problem with dryness.  My hair is also naturally curly so I have more of a problem with it freaking out when the humidity hits.  I use John Frieda products and they are good and usually on sale at Target.
  • The John Frieda WeatherWorks products that Judy reviewed here at the BB website really work well for me. My hair feels less out of control and manageable when I use both their shampoo and conditioner.
I have also started a deep conditioning routine of using unrefined coconut oil on my hair, after learning about its benefits from Left & Right Brain. I'm hoping that over time, I'll have less breakage of the hairs around my face.
  • I have to admit, I love my Pureology hydrating shampoo and conditioner. It isn't cheap, but I buy the 64 oz size online. It lasts a long, long time. I use other shampoos to mix it up a little, but I always have Pureology as my main shampoo and conditioner. The conditioner has peppermint in it and is great for waking you up in the morning.
  • I've been wanting to try coconut oil in my hair but I haven't been able to find any. Where did you get yours, Karen?

Dry, damaged hair is the bane of my existence. I'm tired of the short, broken hairs that stand on the top of my head and refused to be smoothed down for long by any serum on the market. I'm also hoping coconut oil will help with that over time.
  • You should be able to find coconut oil at the grocery store. It'll probably be in the aisle with olive oil and mayonaisse.
  • BEG,
If you can't find coconut oil at your local market, check a food co-op or health food store. The oil is solid. It looks something like Crisco. It easily melts when when warmed in your hands. You can also use olive oil to condition your hair. Don't use too much, or it will be hard to wash out.
  • Conditioner is one thing that I'm still willing to really really splurge on.  Reason?  I've bought at least 3 different bottles of shampoo to find one that works as well as the salon brands that I've been using, and none of them work as well.  Literally, my hair just isn't as hydrated and smooth.  I'm not imagining it.  My stylist (whom I've been with for over 10 years, since I was 12) even commented on it, and that girl knows my hair.
Buying more bottles of shampoo to find that one that works as well pretty much equals the same amount of money I would have spent in the first place, getting something that's worked for me before.
Sooo... I recommend Wella's System Professional line.  I'm using the 2.1 Hydro Conditioner for the summer because the texture is really light weight.  It's not like the thick Prive conditioner that I used in the winter.  I can't find the ingredients online, and I'm not home, but it is really well formulated.  I also use their Power Mask when my hair was too too dry, but it's really thick, and I don't like using thick products during the summer, even though it's meant to be washed out.  I'm so weird.
Anyhow... like the Brains said, there are drug store brands that work as well as salon brands, but if you are like me who is sick of trying, just splurge on something that you've tried in the salon before, and that worked for you.
  • browneyedgirl: I get my unrefined coconut oil at Whole Foods. My hair feels really nice after I deep condition with it. (I'm doing so once a week.)
taiwanesegurl: I understand where you're coming from. I love Prive shampoo and conditioner. I, too, notice a difference when I use this product line. I haven't found a drug store brand that gives me the same results so I use the drug store brands most of the time (John Frieda Weather Works or Organix) but Prive when I want GREAT results for my hair.
