Does the inclusion of shea butter or olive oil make a relaxer safer?
  • Or is it just a marketing gimmick?  I've stopped using relaxers/straightners in an effort to nuture my hair back to health and embrace an all-around healthier lifestyle.   While recently reading an article regarding the "natural hair movement", the author mentioned that cosmetic companies have developed safer relaxers in response to customer demand.  I'm not sure how you can make lye "safer" but I'm not a scientist so I'm wondering what the Beauty Brains thinks about that statement.

  • I guess definitely , the inclusion of Shea butter and olive oils makes a relaxer safer because these two ingredients are very powerful agents of nature which can really help our hairs, skin, body in many ways.
  • The quick answer is no. All relaxers have an oil phase. The type of oil doesn't reduce the damage caused by the hydroxide. If it did, the relaxer wouldn't work as well.
  • Thanks for the response!  I didn't realize that relaxers had an oil phase.
