Nail Care and GREAT customer Service
  • I have a horrible time with my nails. When ever I start using nail polish and removers on my nails they self destruct and peel off in sheets. I e-mailed Ji Baek, owner of Rescue Beauty Lounge, about my nail problems. I bought her book, rescue your nails, but it did not address peeling nails. I was amazed when she responded almost immediately. After explaining the problem to her, this is what she recommended.

    Hi there,
All the vitamins and supplements you are taking excellent care.
When you file do you use long strokes?-you should file them in gentle long strokes. How long do you keep nails?
Can you keep them short with nail polish?
    Here is my suggestion.
Some nails from your DNA are naturally weak therefore it peels and breaks when it's too long.
I would keep it short and try the nail polish on for five days take it off give it a rest for two days and continue. If this does not solve the problem....
Switch to different brand of nail polish remover. If that does not work...
Try with base coat and a top coat only, if your nails does not peel than its the nail polish color formula.
We need to isolate what causes it. Let me know how it goes and hope this helped.
    Have a great fourth!
    Ji Baek

I know Karen has a similar problem with her nails, and others may too. I thought this information would be helpful.

After reading Baek's book, and corresponding with her on the internet, I would not hesitate at all about going to one of her salons. Talk about customer service! She must be very busy running her salons, yet she took the time to not only read my e-mails, but to respond to them almost immediately. You can tell from her e-mail that she really cares about her customers. I just wish she had a salon in Washington.
  • EXCELLENT INFORMATION, Anne! Thanks for sharing!!!
  • Rescue Beauty Lounge (the salons and the products) get universally good reviews on MUA. On a related note, many of the nail boarders on MUA swear by taking Biotin for peeling nails.
  • I have been taking a quality GNC Biotin supplement for months now. So far, no change.
  • Anne,
I am surprised that Ji did not ask you what you do for a living or if your parents/siblings have the same problem. Do you have ridges?
If you work with anything drying, that will surely cause your nails to peel. What do you do for your job? Do your wear gloves to clean? How often do you wash your hands? What type of soap are you using? Do you use cuticle oil? Do you tap your nails? (this is something that you may not even realize you do)
Polish removers will NOT destroy your nails unless you are soaking in them constantly.
Polish removers evaporate quite quickly, so again, unless you are soaking in it, I highly doubt that that is the cause of your peeling.
If your polish has a high content of formaldelyde, say OPI for example, that will dry your nails severely.
There would be NO reason to only go with a base and top coat. If you use Essie, why not use Essie color, base and top? The color is not causing  your nails to peel.
The ONLY remover you should use is 100% acetone. This is for natural AND artificial nails. Any tech who tells you different has not kept up with his or her education and is going by OLD school methods and old myths in the industry.
You need to use a GOOD cuticle oil daily, as often as you can. It is pertintent that you use this. You will NOT see a difference for at least eight months, as it takes this long for nails to grow out.
If you opt to take Biotin, you will need to take it for a long time before you will see any results. I have been taking it for eighteen months and am finally seeing results in nails and hair.
Ji needed to ask you much more.
    buenos noches,
    Lynnette

ps--- I see she recommends taking your own implements to the salon. If you came to my salon, I would NEVER use YOUR implements. Any professional that recommends this has NO clue to what they are suggesting.
I would not use anything a client brought in because I do not know if they SANITIZED it, used it on their kids/husband/dog...... Yes, SANITIZE  and NOT sterilize. There is NO need to sterilize implements in the salon.
If you go to a salon that uses saved implements with your name in a box or uses what YOU bring, you are leaving yourself open for trouble, as in infection.
Please be careful about what you read and believe.
Any professional who cares about the client would never suggest taking implements to the salon. This is industry standard. Did any of you see Nancy King on Rachel Ray?

  • Lynnette,

Ji had asked me several questions in an earlier e-mail. None of the girls in my family have strong nails. I wear gloves while cleaning and try to use lotion each time I wash my hands. I use mild hand soaps, and do not expose my nails to anything harsh at work. I don't use polish with formaldehyde in them. I'm careful when I file my nails, and am using a glass file. The only time I have trouble with my nails peeling is after using polish on them for a while. Then they self destruct. I do use cuticle oils and creams. I haven't used polish for about two months, and the nails have all but stopped peeling. I'm waiting for the damaged nail to grow out before trying polish again. I just got a jar of Nailactan from Mavala. I've read good things about it and am hoping it will help strengthen my nails.

Thanks for all the good info!
    Anne
  • Anne: It's almost funny because, again, you have responded to Lynette's information with exactly what I would have written about my own nail care regimen. The only thing I'm not doing is using Nailactan. What can you tell us about this product?
  • Karren,

Nailactan is a nutritive treatment for dry brittle nails made by Mavala, a Swiss company. You rub it in your nail plates and cuticles before going to bed. I've only been using it for about 4 days, so can not tell you yet how well it works. It does seem to moisturize very well. When I looked it up on line, it had many good reviews. I found the best prices for Mavala at beautydeals.net. A .6 oz jar is $14.39. Its pricey, but you only use a very small amount. For reviews and ingredients, go to folica.com. I also bought their extra gentle nail polish remover, but have not used it yet. If the Nailactan works, I think I'll try their Barrier Base. It is suppose to protect and moisturize sensitive nails when used as a base coat. I'll let you know how well the Nailactan works.

I'm sorry you are cursed with the same type of nails I have. It would be so nice to polish nails when ever you wanted with out them falling apart.
  • I am just SO frustrated because my nails can be so great ....as long as I don't use polish or removers.
Thanks again, Anne, and definitely let us know what you think of this product. You've got me hoping!
  • Keep the faith Karen. Between the two of us we should be able to figure this out and have great nails! Or at least, decent nails. Let me know if you find anything that works for your nails.

Like I said before, if your work sends you to Seattle, let me know. I would love to meet you in person. I'll leave the hubby at home, and we will hit the makeup counters!
  • Sounds like fun!
BTW: My next manicure/pedicure will be for a wedding my husband and I will be attending near the NYC area in August. Unfortunately, I'll have to have my nails done here, four days before the wedding, because of our travel schedule. I am not liking that delay! The "kicker" is that the day before the wedding, I could go to the Rescue Beauty Salon instead, since we'll be staying in Manhattan, but there's no way my husband would understand me trapsing off for a few hours to this great salon while he sits around, with all the NYC attractions right outside our hotel.   Oh, well!
  • Has anyone used Barielle nail care products? I know they've been around for years. Lots of them get great reviews on makeupalley.com.. People say they can find them for considerably less at TJ Maxx and Marshalls but Ulta and Sephora do carry their line.
I am very tempted to purchase a few of Rescue Beauty Lounge's polishes and a nail file. Surprisingly, the two they sell are metal! There's mention at their website that metal nail files "get a bad rap" but claim their files are exceptional and will last a lifetime. If you purchase one, they encourage their clients to bring it for their manicures. I know Lynette disagrees with this, though.
I am still seriously considering making an appointment at their salon in NYC when I'm there in August. I'd be in heaven if I could get Ji Baek herself do my nails!!! My birthday is in August so maybe it could by my leverage in the bargaining process?....LOL
  • Karen,

Go for it! After all, you need nice nails for the wedding :)

I don't know about metal files. The ones I've tried were too rough for my nails. I use glass files, and really like them.
  • I like the glass files too. I haven't figured out if there's a difference between "glass" and "crystal" but both are popular on MUA. I've got metal files too and have never had a problem with them but my nails are like cast iron so pretty much anything works fine.
Karen, definitely make the appointment. My husband would be thrilled to have a little time to himself in NYC. Or bring him to the salon and he can get a manicure too. Get it? A manicure? I crack myself up sometimes. Heh, Heh. *Sigh*
  • Okay, ladies: You've got me fired up to do this! I'm going to call the salon tomorrow and see if Ji does manicures herself and if she has availability on the day I'd be in town. Let the bargaining begin!!!
