What Won't You Give Up (Yet !)
  • OK...I know this is a slight variation on the excellent thread on replacing your lost make-up bag, but here goes anyway.
With the economic "downturn" (reality check...RECESSION) are you cutting back on your beauty product/routine/ purchases?  If so, tell us how.  If not, why? And what  product/regimen are you NOT READY to give up until gas gets to, say,  $10/gallon?
For me I guess it would have to be having my hair professionally colored and cut.  I have tried going 6 weeks instead of 5 but I get so depressed by my appearance that I go back to 5 weeks.
I can always switch to Suave products because, to be honest, they are pretty darn good though sometimes I feel "deprived" when I buy them (PURELY a PSYCHOLOGICAL DYSFUNCTION).
    Please discuss.
  • There are a couple things I would continue to buy. First is a good foundation. I'm using Elizabeth Arden Intervene right now. I just have not been able to find a drug store foundation I like. The second is the Shiseido Lash Primer. It actually holds the curl in my lashes the whole day. Usually the curl is gone just hours after curling them.
  • I think I would give up driving first.
  • Wow...TG...you live in LA, don't you?
I also meant to say I can WALK to the drugstore or Sephora but Target would be too far unless I made a day-excursion out of it.
  • ^  Yes, I live in LA, but my work is only 2 miles from my apartment.  I can easily walk or bike there.  And the exact area where I live, the bus is actually quite convenient.
  • I'm also not giving up on my wonderful and rather expensive foundations (LM Tinted Moisturizer and Prescriptives Virtual Youth for when I need more coverage), but I am trying to start going to the drugstore for just about everything else. I am also trying to limit my impulse purchases to an absolute minimum, that alone is going to help me out a lot. Nothing will be purchased by me anymore without an ample amount of research to make sure the product is really worth my precious cash.

I've also not had my haircut in much longer than I should, but I'm already on the lookout for a less expensive hair stylist. My long layers can't possibly be difficult enough to justify $45 haircuts.

In addition, I'm also not going to the spa anymore for anything, not even hair removal. Which is rough, because I absolutely hate using Nair on my upper lip and I can't stand to wax it myself (why is it so much easier if it's someone else doing it?). Anyone know of a better at-home alternative?
  • I cannot give up my hair cuts and colors because I love love love my stylist...we just celebrated our 5 year anniversary this year.  We spent it reminiscing about how he really wanted me to be blonde and how I REALLY had to convinve him to go red on me and we haven't looked back since!
To be honest I would probably give up most of what I have, but not for gas money...but for a cleaning lady.  I would rather spend to have a kickass clean house rather than a kickass eyeliner...but that is just me...
  • I'd give up the frivolous, impulse purchases.  I buy a lot of nail polish, lip gloss, eye shadow, etc that I really don't need and rationalize it because "they're cheap!" I'd eliminate "the fun stuff" (I've got enough nail polish and lipstick to last a life time) so I could keep using the LM tinted moisturizer and NARs blushes. I could probably cut back on my trips to the hair salon; right now I go every 4 weeks, but I could get by with a visit every 5 weeks. The one thing I couldn't give up is my monthly facial. That was the one thing I was religious about when I was pregnant or home with babies. I was okay with my hair getting long and stringy and not wearing makeup but there was no way I was missing a facial.
Cate, I totally agree with you on the cleaning lady. Cost isn't the only issue however, my house is so messy I'm embarrassed to hire one.
  • PR:  I hear ya about the messiness.  It's not too bad...yet.  I am my mother's daughter adn I KNOW if I don't work hard to keep it down it'll be really bad.  But I'd like to think that if someone was coming once a week to clean up my husband's narsty shower that I would try and keep the mess at bay.  All I want to do is laundry ugh...... and cook dinner which I love to do.
